Disney has announced an animated TV series based on Kingdom Hearts.
The news comes via the company's D23 expo, which is currently underway in California.
"An original Kingdom Hearts anime series inspired by the beloved video game franchise is coming soon to Disney Channel and Disney Plus," reads the announcement.
A report on Variety describes it as an "anime adaptation" of the game franchise, with creator Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix directly involved in the project.
The show "reimagines the iconic adventure with a brand-new story that will expand on the universe of Kingdom Hearts while celebrating the characters that have captured the hearts of millions of fans around the world," says Disney.
The Japanese X account for Kingdom Hearts also posted about the series in a message from Nomura himself.
"We can't discuss all the details just yet, but I've been in close discussions with the scenario team, including myself, and when needed, we've also enlisted the art team's cooperation, even creating multiple new character designs specifically for this project," he says (auto-translated).
"I can't say anything more right now, but the hint is in the single piece of key art that's been revealed. Please let your imaginations run wild while you await further updates."
Kingdom Hearts fans are finally being fed; along with this news, it's also been revealed that Kingdom Hearts 4 is scheduled for release in late 2027, and that Pixar's Coco will be part of the game.
