We’re all familiar with the Battle of Britain and Pearl Harbour, but there are some parts of World War 2 that rarely get told by Western media.
The Second Sino-Japanese War, a long-running conflict between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan, is one such example.
This new game, The Defiant, from Chinese studio Hoothanes, promises to reveal more about the conflict, which took place in the 1930s and 1940s.
The press release reveals:

“You’re stepping on the land irrigated with warm blood. Boundless snowy forest, heavily guarded lanes, dangerous villages behind the enemy lines. In these places you’ll experience the serious atmosphere during the War of Resistance against Japanese invasion.”
All wars are horrific, of course, but this particular conflict is notorious for its many, many harrowing chapters, including the Nanjing massacre, depicted in last year’s movie, Dead to Rights.
It seems the dev wants to be as historically accurate as possible here, saying “every plant and every brick silently recounts the undeniable historical facts”.
That extends to the weaponry too, which is all inspired by firearms used in the real conflict.
It’s interesting to see a different type of war story here – one seldom depicted by Western developers.
The gameplay looks a little rote in my opinion, but if the studio can actually depict the events of the Second Sino-Japanese War with accuracy, then this could make for a disturbing but ultimately engaging campaign.

So it's KCD2 but with guns.... count me in!
It'll be interesting to see what they include, and how far it goes.
Itlooks potentially it might be a little cartoon-y with its heroes vs villains, but then that would be more enjoyable than a harrowing recreation of what it was really like. I suppose we'll find out.
@Oram77 Closer to Chinese CoD, I think.
As a CoD fan, I actually think this looks really cool. I'd love to explore a side of WW2 that we haven't seen in video games before.
@wildcat_kickz I only said that because they are going for historical accuracy and environmental detail, from watching the trailer it actually looks pretty good!
@Oram77 Ahhh gotcha. Yeah, it does look pretty promising. No doubt, they'll be scrubbing anything that makes China look bad, but it's not like CoD does anything different from a US/UK point of view.

Showing a side of WW2 that has virtually zero representation in video games is an interesting premise for a game, I'll definitely keep an eyeball on this one.
Looks pretty good. Its been too long since we had games like this and by this I mean a historical fps that's focused on single player. Loved the old MoH, CoD and BIA.
The hostilities in Europe could be ended after WWII, but those in Asia are still well and alive. This game will probably be full of nationalism, and the Japanese will be depicted as pure *****, while the Chinese will look like honourable heroes. I expect a total lack of nuance.
@Max_the_German
Getting bent over China doing it is kind of moot. Call of Duty is pure propaganda too, most war games with few exceptions (Spec Ops The Line for one) are as well to be honest.
@Max_the_German To be fair, if you look into the atrocities which occurred in Nanjing, there isn’t a lot of nuance to be found.
Atleast its not another mythical Chinese action game.
I mean sure, but to me I couldn't care less. Give me interesting vehicles or mechanics, multiplayer is boring and singleplayer is just hit and miss with the more boring heavy feeling characters I've ever played in the modern era.
Sure Medal of Honor or others have had the odd Pacific side showing or whatever but however much? Always many sides to show though that never go shown in media.
Even many older wars, if there is much to show, most are of in the last few decades, what about older wars in the 1800s century? Most are of fair moments in the 1900s century but even still. Or is there nothing really worth showing in older then 1900s? Not enough documented? Or nothing exciting of high points? Or weapons or whatever story telling?
Or I don't know alternate history. I don't mind the odd historical but the creativity is just gone most times so I'm only playing old modern shooters instead. XD
Sure COD is good in the past, Turning Point was fine, Wolfenstein is fair, Battlefield is fair. Others here and there.
Though covering other sides of history is nice, depends how they handle it though.
That and the odd Doom and others happen here and there but it's not the same.
A WW2 game that's not about Americans in Normandy, and looking at under utilised factions and locations. This has my attention.
This looks like a rare title that claims to be historically grounded and might actually deliver on that promise. I’m definitely open to learning more. Chinese game studios are really bringing the heat lately.
This is honestly needed. The atrocity denial in Japan is incredibly rampant especially with their current government.
I wonder if this game will be difficult. The Chinese military in the 1930s was far inferior to Japanese military. They lack modern weapons and anti aircraft weapons. Players will be fighting against a modern westernized military as a soldier in an antiquated military.
Japan was the Asian nazi so this looks interesting to me.
Wow this really looks great,
@Max_the_German "Nuance"? Do you know what happened at Nanjing? And if you dislike nationalism, hoo boy, wait until you learn more about Imperial Japan.
@SintasSays I know these atrocities. But let’s see whether the roles and conflicts of the Kuomintang and the Communists are depicted in a nuanced way.
And by the way: The fact that a massacre is part of a game which is about the fight of two armies wouldn’t be needed. But the devs want to fuel negative sentiments.
This topic is heavily politicised in China, so I highly doubt that “every plant and every brick silently recounts the undeniable historical facts” in this game. But I don't care as long as it is fun to play.
Will be buying the Hank Hill character pack dlc.
"So, are you Chinese or Japanese?"
@Max_the_German I don't think it's the responsibility of a Chinese developer, when making a game about WW2, to say, "yeah, but we also suck because of x, y, and z." CoD WW2 didn't have a mission about the Japanese internment camps and no reasonable people had a problem with that being omitted from the story. It wasn't the story they were telling.
I'm not defending China. To put it incredibly mildly, they have some problems.
But to quote the West Wing, "all wars are crimes." No nation comes out of a war looking squeaky clean. While it's true that history is written by the victor, a small price to pay for the Axis powers is they get turned into cartoon villains in a lot of fiction. So it goes.
