PS5 Disc Drives Limited to One Per Person, Sony Acknowledges High Demand 1

Update []: It turns out the limit on PS5 disc drive orders may have been in place prior to this week’s announcement, so perhaps not related to a sudden influx of scalping.

The disclaimer about Sony ceasing to manufacture physical games in January 2028 is, of course, very much new.

Original Story: Honestly, if you don’t laugh you’ll cry.

Sony is limiting sales of PS5’s optional disc drive accessory to one per person on its PS Direct store, citing “high demand”.

With the platform holder’s decision to cease manufacturing game discs in January 2028, it’s possible scalpers may have sensed an opportunity here. If that’s the case, I suppose it’s good to see the company react quickly.

But it’s hard to ignore the irony in a week where it’s effectively signalled the death of physical games.

The product page itself now includes a notice on this topic:

“From January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console.”

Sony’s optional disc drive add-on is compatible with both PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro consoles, and works as an extension to allow you to play physical games.

The company has not yet commented on whether the PS6 will support it as well.
