'No Disc, No Buy': Even Metal Gear Solid's Snake Is Mad at Sony's Physical Games Decision

I knew Solid Snake would come in clutch!

Their silence is deafening.

The way Snake gets a little overexcited when he inspects the M1911 A-1 Eva gives him in Snake Eater is how I feel when I examine my vast library of physical discs and cartridges.

Hnnghhhh…A weapon to surpass digital media!

To me, the biggest issue was that they announced the cancellation of discs on the same day that they ended the digital storefront for the PS3 and PS Vita. There really needs to be a bigger conversation about game preservation, and also ownership in this digital age

The only thing Sony cares about is the bottom line and making their shareholders happy. Doesn’t matter how many people on X and YouTube shout about it, no matter how famous they are. The only chance of something changing is if it hurts their profits.

@NoPhysicalNoBuy123 No rule against it. I don’t like that anyone who doesn’t fully follow the narrative is considered a bootlicker or attention seeker.

I’ll never begrudge someone their convictions, but a large amount of games either never get physical versions or only come out at ridiculous upcharges thanks to folks like Limited Run.

This isn't going away as fast as Sony thinks, even if they don't go back some assurance that what you buy digitally will never be taken away would be better than nothing.

@Oneluckyfarmer Not only them. My friends and I buy many digital games yet we are absolutely disappointed at this decision.

It screwed every consumer of PlayStation, whether they buy physical or not.

I know a lot of you are bored of the ongoing conversation, and I understand that, and for the sake of my own well being, I’m not going to say anything else on the subject that hasn’t already been said.

I’m not going to ask you to join a crusade you don’t believe in, but please understand that this is an emotional situation for a lot of us, especially for those in which physical gaming is something of a safe haven for.

@ConkersGoodFurDay its going to take regulation by elected officials... hopefully the EU does the same thing that they did to apple with the universal usb-c. Ownership must be preserved.

@ShadowRJ I get it. Like I said, I mostly play physical myself. It sucks. I just don't know if flooding social media with comments is the best way to go about it. Corporations tend to respond better when they get hit in the wallet. I'm still buying physicals whenever possible. That's still voting with my wallet.

Nintendo also likes money 🙂 if all publishers including Sony and Microsoft are digital only I doubt Nintendo will try hold the physical media mantle for the entire world.

@LogicStrikesAgain Yea, not really buying that. Plenty of people that only buy digital are speaking out because of the impact it will cause to game prices.. PlayStation and publishers will control the entire market and limit sales at their own discretion. New IP's will suffer because people will not buy a full price game if they aren't sure about it.

@colt45z I also believe a lot of games have suffered when the price increased from £50-£70. No coincidence that Sony published games have sold less since that

@colt45z I’m not sure to which part of my comment you’re reacting to tbh. But to answer your comment, i believe Sony will reintroduce third party key sellers to keep prices in check. They have to, since they’re already slammed with monopoly lawsuits as it is

@LogicStrikesAgain @colt45z Their announcement already said retailers will sell keys. Shopto already sell discounted credit, so I expect them to do the same with game keys. (Not that this makes much sense with catalog titles given PSN sales)

@GamingGod I think Clair Obscura 33 team proved what kind of game can be made with a lower budget ($10M) and a highly passionate small team. Sony should consider this instead to increase margins.. Spend less, hire better people.

Impressed that Hayter is a gamer (and check out the retro GameCube) but his collection leans a little heavily toward the XBOX, and last gen at that. Someone get this man a PS5.

David Hayter is video game royalty to me, the only voice of Snake! No offense to Kiefer (Who is a great actor & singer) but he couldn't hold a candle to David and hated that Kojima replaced him.

david hayter is a geuine dude and can see through the BS. fight the fight.

@Neuromancer it felt like keifer spent a day in the recording studio, phoned it in and collected his cheque. there was nothing of substance in the performance. this in part falls on kojima and konami for pulling the budget away, but keifer never should have been given the role in the first place. i agree that hayter is the one and only.

The thing is, there won't be enough people not buying for it to even make dent. We all have seen the numbers. There are so many digital purchasers. Way more. It's just that the physical game owners are shouting the loudest right now. Sony isn't going to reverse course.

I assumed M$ would follow suit as per Starfield and release it physically but no, so there's a digital only purchase that I had no choice in.
