But, I mean...it does kinda look like Nintendo is close to dominating the console gaming space. And the compute crisis is really f***ing over Microsoft and Sony, forcing them to refocus efforts on their current systems rather than get momentum going for the next (if the $500 price doesn't kill S2 sales, and there's not another increase, I'd say Nintendo gains the most from the whole thing).

And despite the befuddlement seen in response to your comment, there was pretty clear messaging during this Direct that the Switch 2 isn't going to miss out on big games going forward. Stellar Blade, the big PlayStation exclusive of yesteryear, coming Switch-ward is pretty emblematic of that. Metal Gear and Tomb Raider having a presence at a Nintendo event is likewise noteworthy. And Spyro was just announced, coming to S2 day and date. Day and date for Kingdom Hearts 4, as well.

Now, is Sony "on the defensive"? I definitely wouldn't put it that way. But the PS5 certainly feels as risk of losing a lot of future market share to the Switch 2. And without a PS6 in the near future, Sony might not have much to counter with.

Certainly seems to me that the Switch competes more with the PlayStation than portable PCs or any other hardware. Regardless of that, it's all gaming, and all competing.

But I would say the price increase really hurts PS5's forecasts, and, depending on how markets respond to the S2's increase, could lead to a shift in market share.

Not like PS5 is going to become a failure. But I see a lot of opportunity for the S2's growth. Very little for the PS5 aside from GTA.

@get2sammyb But that's exactly the thing. If the PS6 was coming out, I wouldn't think the S2 has much opportunity to overtake market share. Or if the PS5 could price itself to undercut the S2 proposition.

If markets can swallow S2 at $500, it'll definitely thrive.

@KawakiisaFraud I think Shift Up understand the risk of being multiplat. They definitely knew they will not receive any big helps and special treatment from Sony anymore when comes to marketing or development like they had with the first game.

I also doubt Nintendo would spend a huge money to promoting this game like Sony did with offline launch event at multiple countries.

So, we'll wait and see how this port and Blood Rain gonna sell on Switch 2. But i can see Shift Up crawling back to Sony if their multiplat effort for Stellar Blade didn't do well.

Maybe GTA will make that all moot. But it seems pertinent that GTA seems to be the only thing expected to significantly increase the PS5's sales in the foreseeable future.

EDIT: I also hope everyone understands that I give zero s*** which console sells better. Xbox can become dominant tomorrow onwards for all I care. I'm just putting on my analyst hat, and Nintendo's fortunes seem the most promising at the moment. IF that $500 price doesn't ruin it for them, as I keep reiterating.

@get2sammyb So...although I agree with you in a way, there are some signs here that make me think about Sony's relationship with third-party developers.

We live in different times, there's no denying that...but let's see:

Resident Evil - RE2 R, RE3 R, RE7, RE8...all were announced at Playstation events...RE9 wasn't...and neither was RE Veronica. And it seems to me that marketing agreements are also disappearing (RE games usually have demos first on Playstation, for example).

Final Fantasy - I don't need to say anything here...the exclusives are over and we see announcements at other events.

Persona - It also had exclusive games on Playstation...but it doesn't even appear at Playstation events anymore.

Stellar Blade - Another game that was exclusive and now the sequel is announced at another event and there are more cases...

Obviously, the games will be released on Playstation and there could be a thousand and one reasons why many games didn't appear at State of Play (they themselves may have wanted to give almost all the attention to Wolverine and God of War). But this makes me think...

Nintendo will have increasingly greater support from studios...and in the medium/long term it will be an increasingly strong competitor.

Very curious to see how Playstation will deal with this. Especially after the release of GTA VI / the beginning of the PS6 generation...huge challenges ahead.

Switch 2 hasn't started been out for a year yet but it's already got a new From Software exclusive, a new Splatoon, a new Donkey Kong. PS5 only had Demon's Souls remake in the first year which is already forgotten.

And no, the whole conversation around Stellar Blade is always about gooning, not the combat or story. Yet with discussions of Bayonetta or Nier, people are mainly talking about the story, lore or gameplay. Even the newly announced Stellar Blade...the whole discussion is about sex.

It's ironic you call Switch a console for casuals though when the God of War creator rage quit Metroid Dread because it was too hard for him. Not enough yellow paint or hand holding for him I guess.

@get2sammyb I saw the article and thought it was very good (I forgot to comment at the time)!!! And I confess it's a subject that has made me think.

Because, let's see, these marketing or game exclusives were good for Playstation... for example, Final Fantasy managed to fill a "hole" that existed in the Playstation game catalog... there are no RPGs or JRPGs (which is a shame). This made a significant number of people buy the console just for FF... it may not be a huge number, but it was still significant. And Playstation is going to lose that now...

To add to that, there's the current situation of Playstation studios. Playstation doesn't have many relevant studios at the moment. Yes, there are... Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Sucker Punch, Guerrilla, Santa Monica, Polyphony Digital and Team Asobi... but most of them take a long time to deliver and some were harmed by live service games... only Insomniac really manages to do a good job in terms of releases.

There are some that are a total unknown quantity in the future (Bungie, Firespite, Haven, Bend Studio, Media Molecule, LFG...). I don't know what will come out of this, but unfortunately I'm not very optimistic.

PlayStation needs more!!! and more variety!!! RPGs, one or two games aimed at a younger audience (Sly Cooper?)...
I'm not in favor of consolidation...but I think PlayStation will have to invest seriously in this. I still think that PC and Nintendo are the great current and future competition, and PlayStation will need everything and more to convince people to buy a PS6...if it plays defensively and doesn't have the boldness to be aggressive...it will have problems in the future, it will stagnate!!!

@RoomWithaMoose The PS5 has sold nearly 100M units and is 6 years old of course sales would slow. The Switch 2 has slowed down pretty hard though, granted a lack of actual S2 games has caused this but it has slowed a fair bit and lost to Sony in the holidays last year. Also got to remember the S2 is kinda where the Switch 1 was where it opened strong with 3rd party but started to slow once the PS5 hit with more demanding games. A lot of the ports the S2 is getting are older games that couldn't run on the OG Switch. Capcom and Ubi to an extent are the ones who have been consistently supporting it with new releases and Day 1 releases.

i gave up on nintendo once the ps1 came out but last few years have gotten back into nintendo games switch 2 is basically getting every third party game now just like sony the fact a new hd-2d final fantasy game and the new kingdom hearts 4 trailer were shown at the switch direct speaks volumes..

@DennisReynolds I don't think you're appreciating how long it might take to get the PS6. Or how advantageous that could be for Nintendo. That the PS5 is an aged console with little room to grow is exactly the problem.

Also don't think you appreciate how slowing technological gains, senior competition, proven success, and burgeoning portable PC markets makes the Switch 2 multiplat push very different from the Switch's. I'm sure the S2 will eventually lose most AAA support like the Switch did, but that might be several years away. For now, the amount of day-and-dates ain't nothing.

I prefaced my whole argument by saying we need to see how the market reacts to the new prices. PS5's sales might've just fell off a cliff (don't think we've seen the US' results yet). Switch 2's might in September, but I feel like if $450 wasn't killing it $500 won't. Maybe PS5 will recover, but it seems Sony isn't even expecting that. So sales will probably stay pretty low untill GTA; we'll see how many fans have waited through all these price hikes to buy a console that can play it.

In regards your comment number 37, and regarding 1 specific point.

Remember that in RE Requiems case Sony and Capcom partnered to release PSSR2 early with this game. Taking the unusual step to add the new version via the game code, before the system level upgrade took place - a couple of weeks later I think off memory. This must have needed technical collaboration between the two.

This was an excellent marketing strategy for both Sony for the Pro, and Capcom, and news headlines were everywhere.

There is an anecdotal piece of evidence here too. The performance mode on Pro does not use PSSR at all, which is unusual, allowing Pro users to see just how big a difference the upscaling tech makes.
Usually both modes would include PSSR, with in this case, RT / no RT but uncapping fps, being the difference.

EDIT: NB the performance mode on Pro is identical to the base PS5 visuals just at a significantly higher framerate.

Sony are probably planning to do some cut price PS5 sales around September and November, like they have done in the past - in fact, it wouldn't surprise me if we didn't see £100 price drops to 'mop up' all those holding off because of price rises.

Sony will likely have set the new prices taking into account their love of deep sales in the last few years, and that they will want to repeat this around the launches of Wolverine etc, and GTA6.

@RoomWithaMoose Helix is out next year. I predict 2028 is when the PS6 drops. End of the day neither of us are analysts nor do we work at Sony so we will see what happens. Worth noting the Switch 2 has already seen its first price increase, 3rd party sales aren't great on S2 and Nintendo are relying a lot on remakes and Switch 2 versions of Switch 1 games, its very much what Sony were doing early on in the PS5 lifespan. I don't think the S2 will come anywhere near Switch 1 sales and i think its going to struggle to match PS5 sales. Once the Switch 2 crosses that 500 price mark its going to be very hard sell to parents who want to a buy a console for their 8 year old.

@johnedwin Not at all. Most Switch owners tend to be kids, at least outside the US. When you look at most multiplatform games that aren't for kids, they don't sell well on the Switch and there isn't the same appetite for them from Switch owners. Coincidentally, I just saw this poll on Games Radar.

It doesn't really paint a picture of domination when next to no one wants to play one of the most anticipated games on it. Even the Series X is a more popular choice.

@DennisReynolds Microsoft have just said they're reevaluating their approach for Helix. It's still coming out next year (for now), but that's because they need it.

Sony is in a much better position where they should be able to run with the PS5 for a few more years. But that also puts them at risk of becoming old news. Maybe they're just going forward with the 6, anyway. But I think it makes a lot more sense to hold it off as long as possible and not have to compromise anything like it sounds like Microsoft will.

After all, there's the very real possibility that if they launched a new console at $800-1200, it would fail to even usurp the 5. So what would be the point?

MSFT had a pie chart showing they weren't that big in the gaming sphere, Sony lawyers argued against it. Demanded that Nintendo NOT be counted. Stating that they aren't a real competitor like XBOX. So they had the charts redone to show the Nintendo less landscape, to better argue.

Sp sony themselves have "in court, and on record" stated that Nintendo is NOT a competitor in their eyes.
