Sony 'Hopes' to Launch PS5's God of War Laufey in the First Half of 2027

SSM releases its games in March or April, so it will be one of those dates unless it's delayed.

Companies have to show games 2 years ahead of time because of obnoxious people on the internet. Would be much better if they didn’t feed the trolls.

@Ricksta older games are better because they feel uniquely “God of War”. New games are great, but feel very much like other games. Like, I can compare 2018 and Ragnarok to TLOU and the like. But the original series did its own thing. As much as I love the whole series. I’d love for them to go back to the original’s style.

@trev666 haven’t played as the God of War for a while now. In fact, when the series started, you didn’t play as the God of War. Didn’t realize this is how games had to work lol. It’s the same thing I heard people saying about Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. “You don’t play as the Prince!” Do people really care that the games aren’t named after the main character?

@trev666 Kratos isn’t really the God of War though. He’s just a random made-up character inserted into Greek mythology. Why is that so easy to accept, but playing as a different character isn’t?

If Laufey next year then i'm not surprised if GoW Trilogy remake also release for PS6.

But 2027 looks pretty good for 1st party output:

It sure looks like well into development, so I wouldn't be too surprised! Fingers crossed but ultimately I hope they take all the time that they need.

As of now nothing is even dated for 2027 unlike with Xbox and Nintendo.

Hopefully things for 2027 become clearer as we get towards the end of 2026.

Spring 2027 sounds about right, 6 months after Wolverine. It would be really fast for a big AAA PS game though, I feel like those take 3-4 years after they're first announced, not 6 months. And Ragnarok wasn't all that long ago.

So now I'm thinking this is going to be a 6 hour linear game like GoW 3, or Miles Morales or Uncharted Lost Legacy. Who knows, maybe it even started as a $30 dlc but now they'll charge $70 for it standalone instead? But maybe $60 if it is just linear and short?

Either way looks good to me, count me in for Heavenly Sword 2. That game was also both linear and short, like GoW used to be. Nothing wrong with that.

Didn't Kratos BECOME the God of War at the end of the first game? If I am remembering that correctly, then the game is definitely named after him since it is the story of how he became the God of War.

Personally, I found the dialogue in the demo of Laufey to sound dumb and kind of for the youtube audience. But I also haven't played Ragnarok yet. C'est la vie. The dialogue in Christopher Nolan's new Odyssey movie also sounds dumb to me.

To each their own I guess, but it isn't complaining for the sake of complaining. That's just a poor response to people with different opinions.

On the flip side, the dialogue in Space Marine 2 ALWAYS sounds like what you should expect from a Warhammer 40K property. And from what I can remember of it, the dialogue in Witcher 2 and 3 always sounded appropriate. I would assume that the dialogue in a GTA, Red Dead or Deliverance also sounds appropriate.

As a final point, I have been a fan of God of War since the beginning and have played all of them but Ragnarok and the new Sons of Sparta. It is 100% possible to be a fan of something, enjoy it, and still have things about it that you can criticize. Nothing is perfect.

@trev666 Better tell Nintendo that about Zelda. So we haven't had a proper mainline game in a while then since you play as Atreus..... The Devs specifically said that Laufey was a mainline game. From what I've seen it follows the other games from a different perspective.

@themightyant Both GoW and Ragnarok took place in multiple locations, like 5 or 6 planets each, and took me I think around 40 hours to play. Based on what they've shown so far it just feels more like the earlier games, linear progression, and it's harder to do that for 40 hours. Ragnarok was perhaps a little more linear than GoW, which I think I spent as much time on side quests as the main story.

I'd be more than happy to be wrong, but that's what I'm thinking. Especially if they only just showed it to us now and it's releasing in less than a year.

It's actually a spin-off but the game got mainline budget.

And we got big franchise where the mainline games offers new / different protagonist. Some easy examples:

• MGS 2
• Ninja Gaiden 4
• Devil May Cry 4 & 5
• Resident Evil 7 & 8
• Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Sure some franchise like Tomb Raider, Metroid, or Hitman still stick with the same iconic protagonist. But that doesn't mean other franchise can't have new protagonist.

That's ok. Early next year is already packed.

@PuppetMaster To be fair, a number of those received similar backlash. People get attached to franchises, and Kratos was God of War for two decades. Add in the seeming tonal shift, and it likely rubbed some people the wrong way.

Annoyingly, it could have been avoided by better communicating that it was a spin-off.

@themightyant I've played Miles Morales and it was a full game. But it wasn't Spiderman 1 or 2. I've played Lost Legacy and it was also a full game, but not as full as Uncharted 1-4. I've never played the handheld one. God of War 3 was a full mainline game, that only toom like 6-8 hours to beat,which is far shorter than GoW 2018 or Ragnarok. Heavenly Sword was a full game and also fairly short. I'm guessing Laufey will be shorter than GoW 2018 or Ragnarok.

Heavenly Sword was only 7 hours. I do think Laufey will be longer than that. They'll almost certainly add a battle arena of some type just to battle. But I'm still guessing a dozen hours for the story, 8-10 less than the other 2.

They put multiple interview videos with the devs that explained the game status right after the announcement.

Heck. They even confirmed that Kratos is still the main character of the franchise + he will comeback for GoW 6 or whatever the title for the next mainline game as well the greek trilogy remake.

@PuppetMaster I think you overestimate how much free time the average gamer has, and how many spend it watching developer interviews for games that have already lost their interest. Personally, I only saw the reveal trailer, in which Barlog referred to it as the next core game in the series.

I say annoying because it could have been avoided with a single title card in the opening 10 seconds of the trailer most would see. Either way, no biggie.

How on earth you missed out the context? They treated Laufey like it's a core game to assure fans that, while Laufey is a spin-off, they will put full effort into the game and keep the quality on par with main titles.

You should annoyed at people who hate female protagonist and believes any games with female protagonist is a woke agenda, not at Sony. Period.

@themightyant Different game types should have different lengths. I play a lot of JRPG and those tend to be long. And I play a lot of platformers that tend to be shorter. But my brain still does $ per hour math and I never feel like paying the same amount of money for a 12 hour game and a 50 hour game. So I tend to borrow shorter games from the library and only buy longer games.

I bought most of the GoW games so far b/c it's a great series, and I'll probably buy this one if it's a 20 hour big adventure like 2018 and Ragnarok, but if it's 10-12 like the earlier games I’ll probably just borrow it if it’s $70, but I’d think about buying it for $50.

So that’s why I’ve been trying to figure out what type of game it is. I over think everything. 😂

Reading that it may be out early 2027 after they just showed it for the first time has me still thinking it will be short. But still plenty of time for them to show us more. Plenty.
