Bandai Namco's dipping way back into the past for its next Tales remaster.
As was leaked a few weeks back, Tales of Eternia is getting the re-release treatment. It'll be the first non-3D Tales title to be revived.
And guess what? It's another game for October, launching for PS5 and PS4 on 16th.
Eternia first released for the PS1 in 2000. It was ported to the PSP five years later, in 2005. It's been officially locked to those platforms ever since.
Tales of Eternia Remastered will feature several quality of life improvements to make the retro adventure feel a bit more accommodating.

It'll have destination markers, an enemy encounter toggle, and a high-speed mode for combat (although it's pretty fast to begin with!).
You'll also be able to flip between the original graphics and the remaster's enhanced visuals. Apparently, some sound effects have been redone as well, and switching graphical modes will change those, too.

I never play this one before, I’m looking forward to it
Sweet, this saves me like $200 by not having to get the PS1 version!
I played this on PSP. I remember nothing about it.
So apparently the Nintendo Direct is everything I really wanted out of the PS State of Play is where I am at today.
I thought this was a He-man game...
I'm really happy to see this one get a remaster although sad that Bamco skipped Tales of Destiny.
Back in PS1 days, i played and finished a bootleg copy of this game. Years later i try to find original copy but somehow the price is very expensives more than $150-200. Then i found out there's a PSP port but there's no digital release and my local stores only stock Japanese copy. So yeah, i'll gladly grab this remaster :3
@Rich33 Eternia was the reason why back then Bamco localized this game as Tales of Destiny II for US market. I don't know how they keep the original title for this remaster, unless they gonna skip US market or change the title as Tales of Destiny II.
@Pandalulz wasn't it mostly Remakes, remasters and ports? I guess if you've not played most of those games before then it's pretty exciting.
@Swandivetotheasphalt That's valid. Just not that into 3rd person action games, all 3rd person action games, all the time.
@PuppetMaster
I suppose a copyright may have lapsed (or never been filed) - sounds unlikely though. But thank you for the history - i was genuinely bemused when I read the article.
@PuppetMaster @Rich33 I don't think it was avoid association with He-Man. That ended its original run in 1985 and this game came out 15 years later in the US. Also, people that grew up with He-Man would've been around 20 or so when this game came out and to most it was a vaguely remembered cartoon they watched when very young.
What's much more likely to be the case, guaranteed I'd say, is that when Tales of Eternia came out in the US, the only other Tales of games that had released in America was Tales of Destiny. They simply wanted to make it very clear it was in the same series.
There are other months besides October
I've never played these much older Tales games. My experience is just with the more recent ones, in which my first was Vesperia. So I'm quite excited about this one! Day 1 for me.
Would be hype except this is apparently single player only, when one of the draws of the original is co-op. Hard pass unless that changes.
@Matroska
There was a live action film in 1987, and a 'sequel / soft reboot' animated series in 1990 - one thing I remember about this was that the transformation trigger changed from "By the power of Grayskull" to "By the power of Eternia".
I was presuming from what he said that @PuppetMaster was referring to a Copyright issue forcing the change - though I would expect that still to be in place with the recent animated series's and the new film this year.
@Rich33 Well I googled around and there's an interview with the devs from the time and they say it was just for brand recognition.

I don't think that kind of thing would really be copyrightable. It's too generic, it's just the word "Eternity" changed to sound like a place name. It's also something I think most people wouldn't be aware of, that He-Man is set in a place called that. I used to like He-Man as a kid in the 80s and I never associated with that when I saw Tales of Eternia.
why did they skip Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Destiny? truly strange to not remaster those first in an "origins" collection of sorts.
@Porco the Tales producer stated that they aren’t going in any specific order, just whatever source code is easiest to get remastered first
@Matroska
Fair enough. Odd that they would return to the original title now, but I suppose it does depend on where you live.
All I know is that, despite not watching any of the He-man series etc since the 90's, that is the first thing myself (and partner) thought of reading this title. With all the recent works (I know they exist and regularly pop up on Netflix, and that there is a new film out), its bound to cause confusion for some.
Eternia is my favourite of 2D Tales games, but if I ever want to replay it, I will. Without paying extra.
@Yor-sama I've been thinking this myself. Surely it's in the pipeline.
Still weird they didn't just release it with Xillia in a duology, though.
pretty cool to see some of the older tales games get some love too.
@Rich33 Like @Matroska said, I guess what i heard was wrong about Bamco wants to dodged Eternia copyright.
But i wonder why they didn't release PSP port in the US...
This is interesting enough to keep following.
New translation and voice acting, which means there is no more excuse to not bring the ps2 entries stuck in japan.
I can't find the info if this will get physical release and Japan dub option or not.
At least a physical release since i collect all my Tales games (got Abyss, Vesperia, Graces F, Hearts R, Xillia 1 & 2, and Symphonia Chronicles) and put them nicely on my shelf.
