The Witcher 3's New Songs of the Past Expansion Could Be as Big as Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

I suspect it will be something similar to the scope of Blood and Wine (which could have been a standalone game). I am very excited about this. Hopefully it comes with a pro patch.

I mean, expansions do pre-date DLC. They used to just come on Discs and were quite a common thing on PC. All the Baldurs Gate games had expansions for example.

Well there no point in going back to the game after so many years for new dlc and not make it as big and impressive as you can especially with CD projects track record with dlc being unreasonably good!

It always interests me why companies don’t release these humongous DLC packs as standalone games. I guess it usually saved consumers that already had the game money. But requires newcomers to buy the base game and the expansion. Regardless, it’s cool to see more Witcher content before the fourth entry.

I can’t wait for this. It’s insane that they are making another expansion for a game over a decade old. The other two expansions were basically their own games due to the scope, so I can only imagine what they will create here.

Didn't all the rumours for this stem from an earnings call predicting a nice jump in revenue this financial year? Hopefully that means it's likely to drop in the first few months of '27.

Wondering what the "it's not dlc" will cost in 2027? Where the first 2 about $15 each? I bought the "Complete Edition" on sale for $15 soon after it released, so I'll get this for like $2.99, however long it takes to go on sale for that price. I've waited all these years, what's a few more. And if I don't, I don't.

Talking about Expansions does take me back to the old pc days where Expansions were just that, expanding the game you currently have with a ton of new content.

What this probably means is that, Songs of the past will be similar in scope to Blood & Wine or Phantom Liberty, and it will cost as much as well. I have no problem with this since in my opinion CDPR are the best when it comes to DLC/expansions, just look how they won RPG game of the year in 2016, but with their expansion.

@Fiendish-Beaver Of course I can't say for certain but I would think it likely work like the previous expansions. Plus I'm sure they gave you an option to start a save at the required level for that expansion. They will probably do something similar for this.
Of course it doesn't work as well as continuing from an end game save file.

You mean it’s actual, legitimate story content operating as an extension of the core design principles laid out in the base game, the way DLC’s were always intended to be? No low effort wave survival slop screaming ‘asset reuse’ tacked on, no repetitive low-IQ horde mode or rogue like gameplay elements which have nothing to do with the base game shoehorned in? It’s almost as if CDPR is part of an elite group of studios which understand the original promise and intent of Add On Content.

FromSoft and CDPR are some of the only AAA developers that make genuine DLC. I’d be willing to number Bethesda among them if only they could iron out the infinite technical mess that is their engine&toolset.

@Balaam_ Well you got expansions on PC way before consoles started having DLC. They were always proper expansions, like Lord of Destruction for Diablo II and Brood War for Starcraft. Or the WoW expansions. From the offset of the use of the term DLC for console things, it was really crappy little add-ons. The infamous Oblivion horse armour springs to mind. Typically more PC oriented developers have stuck to the expansion idea whereas with more console oriented games you get new cars, weapons, skins etc. The main exception that sticks out is Fromsoft's various Souls (and similar) games.

It might be an expansion but it's still DLC (Downloadable Content), hence having to download the content to add to your physical or digital game.

Gonna add some new depth to my annual playthrough. 😁 And hopefully we won't be reduced in level.

@HerlockSholmes nah. Tons of people have upgraded to the pro at this point. Well at least a lot say it on Reddit and other gaming pages. They always throw it in the conversation like they are trying hard to flex or something lol. Something a kid typically would do. Throw in casually something about the pro when the topic is actually about a game. So going by that and the numbers I’ve seen a lot of people have the pro. So I’m gonna go out on a limb and say it will be ready for the pro and the bums still stuck on ps5 slim. Heck even the really big bums stuck on OG ps5. Cd projeckt red I believe will take care of the master race of the console world lol.
