Annoyed you can't get your hands on a PlayStation 5 console? You're not the only one because PlayStation boss Jim Ryan feels for you. As part of a new interview with Axiom, the suit has directly commented on the scalping situation that plagued the first few months of the system's lifespan. While the problem seems to have significantly died down at this point, Ryan said the following on the lack of PS5 stock: "This really frustrates me and upsets me, especially when resellers and bots manage to get their hands on stock."
Jim Ryan then expanded on the topic, explaining that Sony is "working incredibly hard" to ensure PS5 consoles make it into "the right hands". For example, the sort of users reading this very website. One way this is being done is through the expansion of the PlayStation Direct website, which will be brought to Europe and beyond before the end of March 2022.
However, despite these supply issues, Sony has managed to sell more PS5 systems than PS4's within its first fiscal year on the market. 7.8 million PS5 units had been sold as of 31st March 2021, and that number will have only increased in the time since. I would like to see larger retailers take some action, perhaps the industry as a whole could apply some pressure. The persistence it took to get a ps5 in Canada was actually alarming. Forget trying to get a decent GPU too. It's ridiculous.

I'm surprised Jim knows what a PS5 is. He probably had to cross-reference a spreadsheet to tell him the common slang used to refer to "goal-aligned consumer electronics distribution channel for the PlayStation division."

I imagine so, if people have to spend twice as much on a console (which Sony sell at a loss), then those people can buy fewer games (which is where Sony make money).
At this point getting a PS5 is pointless. Too many cross gen games ranging from 2021-2022. I’ll stick with my PS4 Pro and will probably wait until the PS5 Pro is out.

I'm really not sure it has died down all that much but eh, it's whatever. Been selling a lot of stuff on local marketplace venues lately (I'm moving) and there's never not handfuls of PS5s and Xbox Xs going for 800 to 900 bucks. To say nothing of the offerings on eBay and Amazon's marketplace.
That said, I'm fine waiting. I'm buying one in a store, whenever that day comes, and not a moment sooner.
Well the UK this week has been great for stock and many drops but all gone in minutes.
Scalper price is around £550. So it’s getting better over here.

@Ilovecoffee I dunno. Maybe you don't want one yet, and therefore it's pointless for you to get one, but owning the system itself is definitely not pointless.
Demon's Souls, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank are all great at what they do. Astrobot made me feel like a kid playing PS1 for the first time. Getting the same feeling right now playing Ratchet and Clank.
The visual upgrade on FF VII is very nice, and Horizon is looking amazing. Can't wait to see what the PS5 version of God of War looks like.
Final Fantasy XVI is looking very good too.
Then there's the PS Plus collection, and the controller. The Dualsense is as great as they say it is.
PS5 is not just a more powerful console, which is what we usually get when we jump a generation. The SSD and the controller add so much to the experience.
It's absolutely a next gen machine, and it still feels better than I had hoped it would, and this is after 6 - 7 months in. I've had mine since launch and the novelty hasn't worn off.
Been playing games for 30+ years. I can remember "press play on tape and then any key", then waiting 10 minutes for the game to load.
This SSD... there's no load time. That's magic to me.
Then again, maybe I'm not the best gauge - I'm the kind of fool who gets a Series X, installs a bunch of old games, and then doesn't use the console because I bought it for Avowed and Fable.
I'm also a little bit drunk right now, but I stand by what I say.

I was lucky enough to get mine off PlayStation Direct (I got my Series X from Best Buy). But for those who aren't that lucky and still battle "the internet", it's time.

Letting retailers sell the damn units in store would help. From the start I've been saying that, the excuse not to do so was lame as hell, it's even more ridiculous now. There's reasons Sony, MS and Nintendo don't want to sell their consoles in store and it has nothing to do with any pandemics. Another case where I wish the suits at these companies would be honest rather than a bunch of slimy businessman.
If people pay scalpers prices then they don't have any money left for software which makes Sony money.

@Flaming_Kaiser Ah it's fantastic. There's something so honest about it. Just a fun little experience. Other than the time trials you'd probably be finished with it in a few days, but it's still super charming.
Here's an idea, just let me order one. I don't care if it takes 6 months for you to deliver, if I've ordered it and it'll get here sometime, then I'm good to wait. This having to keep checking PS Direct for the random days and times they release stock, or getting notifications from 3rd party trackers, or trying to snag one from a retailer in competition with inhumanly fast bots is the real hassle. At this point my time investment trying to get one is greater than the increased cost of buying it scalped.
The first console I’ve had trouble buying is the first one that’s available online only.

Easier to do it online and the long term goal is to probably have sales just go through their own websites. They don't really care who gets the system just if they get the sale. That goes for all the big 3.
Easy sorted. Existing PS plus users are allowed to order 1 each when a new console is launched. Hardly rocket science

@CptH0vvDy Does seem like the best way to stop most scalping but there is a cost to not drop shipping directly. They don't care about scalping, they do care that it's upsetting people looking for one but not enough to effect an actual change that makes a difference.
@4kgk2 Well, that's easy to say in the first year but obviously an enhanced version isn't out of the question during it's life cycle. Technology changes dramatically in just 5 years.

Yup. This is basically what happened to me, so I just ended up buying mine off StockX
@tselliot developers will be barely even using the ps5 power for first two years of the console lifecycle.the console is definitely way more future proof than the ps4 which launch with old hardware in it. The only reason the ps4 pro existed is to take advantage of 4K tv’s which became the standard. Unless 8k TVs starting to become the industry standard this gen there no need for a ps5 pro this gen.

@Gamer83 What are a few reasons they do not want to sell PS5s in stores? Genuinely asking here. Also, how about the people who need to buy them online? We are still in the middle of a global pandemic with a major chip shortage to throw into the mix.
Anyway, I'm not trying to argue. Just curious what anyone's ideas are to stop scalping because it seems insanely difficult to do so.
I stopped trying, bought Miles Morales for PS4 this week and will just play the games I care for (Miles, Horizon, GoW and maybe Sackboy) on the PS4.
Unless something really big and exclusive is announced, I’ll buy a PS5 when I see it on a sale later. And even if something big is announced, I’ll likely not bother until I can walk into a store and buy a PS5 without fighting or camping.
I know I heard a story on the news fairly recently that Amazon employees were caught stealing PS5 orders too. As if things aren't bad enough already you have these scumbags.

@kingbreww you not getting native 4K 60fps on every game on a high end pc right now. So you definitely not going get native 4K 60fps on every game a 500$ console this gen.
Sell it in physical stores.
Sell it to people with active psn accounts.

Finally getting one tomorrow, thanks to B&H Photo for doing it right, setting up a waiting list and giving them to verified account holders.
@Ilovecoffee nah...you buggin, PS5 is great and already has amazing exclusives. It sucks folks can't get one, but no need to downplay. The controller alone is worth upgrading, let alone the exclusives and playing stuff like Ghost at 4K 60fps
the whole situation is like trying to buy gold with a price of silver..i can see the ps5 selling around 30million and still be hard to find.
Sony has the most direct marketing ever. They already have our email addresses and probably a ton of credit card info too. All they had to do was send a notification through the PS4... asking anyone if they wanted to be reserved for a PS5. Then once the release happens, everyone that’s already playing a Sony could upgrade. Instead they sold it as product on a shelf and scalpers snagged them all. That’s fine, I can wait. Still have a backlog of old games to finish... but, had they come to me first, I would’ve upgraded. Not like there’s a debate between PS5 and Xbox.
With the demand for the ps5, Sony can set the rules on how it’s sold. They can require it’s purchase be through your PlayStation account and weight by the number of trophies, years registered, or games played.

So, stock MIGHT be available by March 2022.
No rush then. Thankfully the Pro + SSD is still working quietly and quickly.
Email a onetime use code for every Playstation Plus member asking if they'd like to buy a console. If they say yes, charge them and send a console once available. Easy. Done.
CEO is grossly overpaid if he couldn't figure out how to defeat those pesky resellers he claims to care about.
