Update: Leaked documents published as part of the Apple vs Epic Games lawsuit reveal that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will be exclusive to Xbox Series X|S for just three months.
Original Article: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 may have one of the most obnoxious names to type of all time, but a lot of people are looking forward to the first-person sequel. Announced for PC and Xbox Series X|S – this one, allegedly, can’t run on last-gen systems like the PlayStation 4 – many have been pondering whether the title will also release on the PS5. The answer is – well, it’s complicated.
Speaking with Gaming Bolt, developer GSC World said that there are “no plans for now”. It went on to explain that it “negotiated the possibilities with Microsoft and saw several good opportunities for the brand” thus it’s “concentrating on the Xbox Series X|S version”. Translation: this is a timed exclusive that will release on PS5 anywhere from six to 12 months after its initial launch.
In the meantime, a bunch of ex-S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developers are working on Chernobylite, which has a similar vibe and is coming to PS5 later this year. It’s a shame about the timed exclusive stuff, but Sony signs these kinds of deals all the time, and as long as the game eventually comes out on the next-gen PlayStation then all’s well that ends well.

Well people did say that Xbox lacked exclusives. At least it’ll be on PC, seriously looking forward to this one.
If it's anything like original stalker, it can only benefit from a 6-month delay. That game was buggy.. great potential, but almost unplayable at release date.
Don’t know a lot about this one but it has my interest for my series X.
Well once we see some gameplay and reviews and opinions, then it might be worth ago on my PS5. I don’t think it is a clear cut FPS game but is a bit different. Current footage shows nothing really.
Unless it is top end material, it will come and go in a whim. Actually I sometimes wonder with a lot of games, how they make any money at all for the studios.
Obviously you have your big hitters that sell many millions, but a lot of games don’t sell near that and just disappear sales wise.
Xbox really don't seem to have any "Exclusive to Xbox" games in it's first year of release apart from Halo Infinite and Forza, as The Medium and now S. T. A. L. K. E. R. 2 seem to be timed. The Hellblade sequel might be next year, but anything from the Bethesda deal will be a good few years. So what will they have meanwhile to keep them going? Just indies?
Sony meanwhile have an indie slate too, but are knocking exclusive blockbusters out the park, and I'm sure there's going to be some big announcements coming (the next Kojima game and the From Software title that's in production alongside Elden Ring). It's an exciting time to be a PS5 player...
Isn’t FF7R a Sony time exclusive - and why Xbox owners still waiting. I need to wait for MH:Rise on PC because Nintendo’s time exclusive.
Everyone does it. This is a PC game in my book - was always looking to play it there. They said not on PC Game Pass, but doubt that will hold for long
This will be on playstation at some point in 2022 guaranteed, it doesn't look as good as chernobylite but will definitely give a go
@Profondo Halo Infinite is a day one PC release isn't it?
@Profondo - There's a strong possibility that Bethesda will release Starfield this year. Its been in development almost 5 years now. Sony were trying to moneyhat a PS exclusive deal for it before the MS Zenimax takeover, that would indicate the game was somewhere towards completion.
Considering all the past Stalker games were insanely buggy and were only really playable if you modded the hell out of them, I'm not all that excited about this one. Fact they havent even showed any real gameplay yet doesnt really help.
@Xenomorph_79 I don’t think the exclusivity thing is any one companies fault...
As a mainly PS/PC player I’m stoked MS is getting a broader range of exclusives for their console whether they are timed or outright exclusive. Personally didn’t find last gens handful appealing enough. Looking forward to a series X on the shelf at some point and it’ll be the exclusives that bring me to that point.
@Xenomorph_79 Microsoft did timed exclusivity first then sony did it seems like people only complain about it when it's Sony doing it though
@Would_you_kindly
Timed exclusive games existed long before playstation.
Sony did it also with ps1 (resident evil, ridge racer) before xbox existed.

@Kopite All first party Microsoft games launch day and date with PC and Xbox consoles now.
I just wish all companies would cut it out with timed exclusives.
@Would_you_kindly no they didn’t. Timed exclusive and money hatting existed before. Atari did it with PAC-Man-

@Profondo Another From Software title??
@nessisonett people need to say the series x lacks exclusives. They always go to PC aswel. Kinda nulls the reason to buy a series x apart from price honestly.
@Xenomorph_79 There is such a thing as bad competition. Just look at what Epic does on PC. They lock away games to get people to use their store instead of investing in their store and making it one people want to use.
Pertaining to consoles, Microsoft can lose tens of millions of dollars each quarter or more on Game Pass simply to get Game Pass to be the "next best thing." Sony and Nintendo can't do that. In the future, if gamers come to expect Game Pass's business model as the norm, companies that need their gaming divisions to be profitable will be disadvantaged against larger companies that do not, while those larger companies expend their larger capital scooping up more exclusives and studios. We're seeing bad competition unfold fight before our very eyes.
@Link41x find that to be mad myself, but as long as people are part of the gamepass system and keep paying they won't care
@Profondo While Playstation has great exclusives as always, the acquisition of Bethesda will surely work in MS favour. Plus Elden Ring will also be on Xbox too and the rumours of Kojima working with MS on his next project (or his next project simply coming to the platform). It’s a great time to own both consoles, considering what both companies are offering this gen.
@TheCollector316 I think it’s more of a case of Microsoft expanding their brand beyond console, say what you want but subscription services are pretty much the new norm and it’s not going to slow down anytime soon. They’ve been smart with their approach and given with how many subscribers Game Pass has, it’s worked in their favour and good on them for it. I’ll play Sonys excellent first party games on their system while using my Series X for game pass, with all 23 studios under this belt which will all release day 1 if you own game pass, I don’t see how this is a negative for the consumer.
Timed exclusives, whether this or ffvii:re, the latter console tends to get the "definitive" experience. Get it first, warts and all; get it last, but the best version. First world problems, I guess.
This says to me that it’s a timed exclusive and the devs are lip-locked on it as part of the deal. I reckon it’ll get a PS5 release after around 12 months.
I think Microsoft are just buying as we know and putting together a formidable amount of studios and games. It won’t impact consoles sales to much either way this generation of about 6 years.
Towards the end of this generation Microsoft’s studios will pay off and set them up far better for the following generation, especially after games wise a terrible start this new generation.
But where they go with it is a tough one, do they stop the hardware business and just put gamepass on every single device including PS6 or switch 2.
If there is good money that way I think they will and not bother with hardware let Sony and Nintendo go to the trouble with hardware.
Three month is not too bad, I hope there's at least psplus discount for the game when it launched on ps4/ps5 😃
It’ll actually get ported to the Switch, despite the dev saying it couldn’t run on PS4 and Xbone.
@OM1993 Nothing is exclusive to Xbox by not being on PC now. That’s not how MS does things. Which means the only place for it to go after 3 months is PS5.
Didn't Phil Spencer say they don't do timed exclusives. Besides Yakuza Like a Dragon, Medium and STALKERS 2 obviously.
@OM1993 Technically that just means the earliest it could come to other consoles (which is basically the PS5) is 3 months later. The same way Final Fantasy 7 Remake could technically be on Xbox today but there’s no sign of that happening. Just saying 😉
@OM1993 Lol, no problem. What I really find strange here, is 3 months. That’s not enough to be meaningful. A year makes sense, but 3 months? That doesn’t feel like it adds much of anything to the console’s value.
@Voltan But FF isn’t more likely to sell more copies or as many copies on Xbox as a PS5 release of this would be. They’d be insane not to being on the PS5 with how it’s selling.
@Jaz007 I’m just saying its exclusivity agreement was for 1 year but it didn’t come to other platforms afterwards. So while this Stalker thing means it could come to PS5, it doesn’t mean it will.
@Jaz007 Ummm, no. Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a much bigger deal than this game, no matter how good the PS5 is selling (the Series X is selling out too, so...)
Not knocking this game, as it could end up being a very good game, but any random game being released on PS5 does not guarantee it will sell more than a major game being released on another platform.
3 months, 6 months, a year...doesn’t matter. Sony has already given gamers sooooo much this generation with a clear roadmap of everything coming. Whenever this one makes it to the PS5 won’t matter.
@KilloWertz I’m not sure if there’s another agreement for next gen exclusivity, but it’s not going to sell 1/4th of what it did on PS4 as on Xbox One. There is less to gain with FF on Xbox One than Stalker on PS5.
And statistically, yes, there’s is a good change that’ll it’ll double, or close to double its console sales by releasing on PS5. 35% increase of overall console sales would be a modest and very conservative estimate. Likely much more.
Actually, I just looked and even though they’re both selling out, PS5 is head by two million units, meaning the change of it matching Xbox sales are pretty high.
@Jaz007 But that's not what you said. You were comparing an Xbox release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake to a PS5 release of this, not the PS5 release to an Xbox release of this game.
Just because a game is on PlayStation doesn't mean it will outsell a major game on Xbox. That's just silly, and borderline fanboyism. It is true that Final Fantasy has a bigger audience on PlayStation than Xbox because it was exclusive to the brand for some time (for the most part), so it is associated with the brand. Still, there's plenty of people that would have loved to have the game on Xbox like it could be right now. The release was a huge deal, and I find it very hard to believe it wouldn't be on Xbox. We're talking about a remake of probably the most beloved Final Fantasy game of all time, and with the remake one of the biggest JRPG releases of all time.
To get it somewhat back on topic, again, I'm not saying this game won't end up being pretty good. Still, once again, just because a game releases on a PlayStation doesn't automatically mean it will sell that well. Games have to stand out in one way or another, and sometimes fail even if they are good. Non-mainstream (aka not Call of Duty or Battlefield) shooters likely do better on Xbox as well because of the history of the two platforms (just guessing there, but it makes sense), and judging by your statistics Xbox isn't that far behind this generation so far.
@KilloWertz From what point of reference? What game that could go to PS4 didn’t tend up on there? Titanfall 2 and such all ended up on Playstation. There is more opportunity to put STALKER on PS than FF on Xbox One. You have to look at the amount of money they could relative to how the game has already performed on the one. What extra percentage of sales is STALKER giving up as opposed to FF not being on Xbox One? Only games paid for by MS for never going on PS didn’t end up on PS4. Because there was that much opportunity. How many PS4 games didn’t end up on Xbox because it didn’t have that opportunity?
2 million behind means PS5 has sold 50% better than Series X, but that’s inflated due to being in the start. It also didn’t look like it would end up that way with Xbox One and PS4 when they both sold out. I think Xbox will do better this gen, but it’s not fanboyish at all to say there’s more opportunity to put a game on Playstation than Xbox right now, or too much to ignore.
PS has easily shown last gen to have more opportunity. Xbox is now trying to show it’s opportunity to match.
And your right, there’s no guarantee it will sell well. It could flop on all platforms. The chance of it flopping it it’s successful on Xbox is very slim though.
Denying that is either fanboyish or trying so hard not to be a fanboy that you ignore actual stats and logic to seem equal.
What game was a success on Xbox but failed on PS4 last gen?
I have games pass so ill play it on there. Why would i pay for it when it comes to sony?...
Ps plus is so bad and playstation now is even worse compared to games pass ..
@Jaz007 umm ps5 sold more than xbox because sony had more ps5 in stock compared to xbox. They didnt make that many to start with and i guarantee you they sold most of them in america compared to other countries.
@BansheeNorn Sony probably anticipated more demand and made more preparations. And if they’re all being sold in medics than that’s better for Sony. PS has always been more popular than Xbox in most other parts of the world.
Xbox is playing catch-up. And I wish it luck to keep PS from stagnating, as it has started in some ways lately.
@Dezzy70 They buy up studios because they don't care for current studios like Sony does. Everyone has forgotten about the main 3 for xbox (halo, gears of war and forza) and putting all their hopes on the bethesda purchase. First exclusive are for PS5 and anything else will be on PS5 too. It won't save MS and come the end of this gen, Sony will be in an even stronger place than they were with PS4. Xbox will be dead and just gamepass left.
Have a feeling it's not gonna be very good anyway, people remember stalker fondly but they're all incredibly dated and there's nothing to give me much hope they can bring it into the modern age
12 months polish while I play something else 😎
@CrushALL
Wrong.. sony doesnt care either. Do you know how many gold mine games they are sittin on? Parasite eve, legend of the dragoon, chrono cross to name a few hasnt been remastered and sony opted for no backwards compatibility on the ps5 forcing people to either use an emulator or purchase a retro ps1. Its just plain corporate greed when one is just buyin up the most they can and does nothing with it. Also sony acquired demon souls ip since the ps3 days did nothing with it all of ps4 generation and finally after fans countless begging they released on ps5. That is really sad ..
@BansheeNorn omg the PS1 came out like 27 years ago! why are so many people crying over games that far back. Christ that's what is sad af!!! every new console people want mega outdated games to be played. So when PS10 is out u gonna say "I want PS1 compatibility wah wah" ??? Last gen is all that is needed! I buy next gen console for next gen else I stick with what I got! it's dumb self entitled thinking. Xflop is going hard on it this gen cuz they have no next gen games out! even 6 months after launch! dead console failure!
