Update: The PlayStation Network is slowly coming back to life following an outage that lasted around two hours or so. Just about everything went offline, with users unable to sign in, access online features, or play online games.
Hopefully that's the end of that.
Original Story: The PlayStation Network is having difficulties, it seems. Reports started coming in earlier tonight, and it appears to have only gotten worse over the past hour or so (at the time of writing). According to Sony's official PSN service status page, every aspect of the network is experiencing issues.
In other words, you might not be able to sign in to you account on PS5 and PS4, access your friends list, the PlayStation Store, or other online features. This includes playing games or game modes that require an online connection.
Hopefully it all gets fixed sooner rather than later. It's been a long, long time since the PSN was taken offline almost completely.
We'll update this article as and when the situation changes.

Hitman 3 is quite literally unplayable. Which is crap. Guess I’ll keep hunting cultists in AC Odyssey instead.

Down for me. Not letting me play any of my content as all my games are digital and it says it can't verify my licence without being connected. Literally can't do anything.

@Alfieburns didn't you fetch the licences from the server? All my digital games play offline without internet connection

I had been deliberating what to get in the current sale. Finally made my choice, clicked purchase and obviously failed. Guess the down time is saving me money!
I had no problem getting the Platinum trophy on InFAMOUS Second Son today. I know it's not an online game but still. The game looks gorgeous in 4K on the PS5 and plays so smooth in 60 fps. I can't believe it's 7 years old already 😳.

It's being really weird for me. I'm getting messages from some people but not others, and mine are taking ages to send. My online games still aren't working.

I've been playing since 5pm here in the UK. Thumper, Paper Beast and Astro Bot. Didn't notice it signing me out or anything. Also seen a couple others online and currently watching Netflix. Usually I'd definitely be the one to get this lol

It's coming back online now (but it may still take a little while to be fully up and running again).

I was quite happily playing Yakuza Like a Dragon all evening and had no idea PSN was down 🤷♂️

As for playing games offline I had no issues there at all. Just set the system as Primary. This said if you own more than one system signing in on the other one to be able to play games you payed for should NEVER be a thing at all and I'm quite surprised Sony have been allowed to continue with this anti consumer practice.

@nessisonett The fact that Hitman needs to be online is purely ludicrous. It being affected by internet connection difficulties or an outage is pure nonsense. They really need to update it to work offline just fine. For a game so well supported, it genuinely is horrible in such a simple area.
@2cents it would be more relevant to remind everyone that most playstation fans do not know about the cbomb issue that's found in ps3, 4 and 5.
Considering this article had nothing to do with Xbox, Bethesda, or Starfield, and everything to do with people being unable to access PSN.

A mate had finally convinced me to give Fortnite a go. And then this happened. It's like... fate. Amazing.
I tried to access the PlayStation Store and the message said that it was under maintenance.
Hopefully it’s up by the time I get home.

I wonder if this is why I was logged out of Youtube on my PS5 while watching videos last night. Couldn't log back in either.
@RubyCarbuncle I dunno. I thought that primary console feature was for account security. Kind of Sony's way of stupid proofing it if we log in on someone else's console so they don't have perpetual access to our library, or something like that.

@Shepherd_Tallon It's just an excuse. Somebody could log into the Primary Console too. No I stand by my original statement, signing in on another Console YOU own YOU paid for to play Single Player games should NEVER be a thing.
There's no excuse or no defending it in any way shape or form. I'm not having a go at you btw but I do feel very strongly against this.

Heh, first I'm hearing of this. Was on Tuesday night from 8pm to 10pm UK time playing DayZ with a friend. Didn't experience any issues at all. 🤷♂️

It’s times like this you should just invest in mobile data, if this situation happens then you can just set whatever PS4 you want as your primary during some kind of WiFi issue.
@BanterousBarnzy97 it wouldn’t let me play the game full stop. Online or offline. Never seen anything like it before. It said it was unable to verify my licenses because it couldn’t access the server. I’m guessing if I restarted my ps5 and didn’t connect to WiFi it would’ve worked but I didn’t really want to play fifa that badly
@theMEGAniggle oh damn, it’s one of those “must be online to play” I’ve seen people complain the same thing about Hitman 3, shame some games can be like that, I’ve probably got a fair few myself that I’ve never tried playing whilst being offline.

@BanterousBarnzy97 no no no, it was a system issue not down to individual games. I couldn’t access any of my licenses, whether it be Netflix or fifa because the PSN servers were down, does that make more sense?
@theMEGAniggle there is a thing inside of your PS Settings that says “restore licenses” I usually click that wait 5 mins and it’s all sorted for me.
