Stop the presses: Sony has just released a PlayStation 4 firmware update that does something other than improving system performance. PS4 firmware update 8.03 is ready and available to download right now, and while the change is small, it's a nice quality of life feature.
So, what does the optional patch 8.03 do, exactly? After downloading and installing the 477MB update, a new option will be available in the system's quick menu. Here's the official patch notes:
"[Disable Game Chat Audio] has been added under [Sound/Devices] in quick menu. If you turn on this setting, game chat audio will be disabled. Your voice won't be heard, and you won't hear other player's voices. This setting doesn't apply to party chat audio."
This new firmware update gives you a way to turn off all game chat audio. For online games where chat can be off-putting, this will be a welcome addition. In other firmware news, PS5 has also just received a system software update.

Well, that's a useful option for someone like me who enjoys the quiet (or usually plays with friends). Other than that, it's weird that Playstation is adding things like this and the ability to mute mic now of all times. These are things I wish we had since day 1 on PS4.
But as they say, better late than never, I suppose.
Now I can play siege without getting bullied by 13 year olds.
That’s good, because I noticed an annoying orange light when the controller mic is muted and would much prefer that to not be on.
@Abeedo same. Sick of hearing about how every one of them is my dad, according to what they get up to with my mother.

I wish they'd revert or fix the new party chat. It's absolutely horrible on PS4.

Could have done with this for all those years when playing GTA Online so I could mute screaming kids, people blasting awful music and the French a lot easier.
@ApostateMage you could join your own party and it will mute all other chat audio.

The PS5 could really benefit from the addition of a quick menu. So many features are available instantly on PS4 via this menu and I was surprised to see it dropped.
Generally, I actually find the PS5 UI less intuitive and thereby slower to navigate than the PS4 interface.
@Flurpsel - it's true, you could join your own party, but that was before they changed that feature.
This update is much appreciated since I didn't want to create another account and friend myself just to enjoy the silence.

Well, I rarely game online but "no, seriously your mom!" has been heard one of the tines I have and various other rubbish from a 12 year old. Welcome addition.
@Williamh695 i wasnt coming at you at all..it was a very simple response in that you didnt state clearly what you meant and as for being mad about having no ps5 yet i could care less and i hope everybody is enjoying it as much as i will be soon..chill out sunshine..

@Jaz007 I know you can mute individuals, didn't know there was a blanket setting!
@BowTiesAreCool If you go to audio settings, you can adjust voice chat volume. If you set it to 0 it’s turned off.
This is right up my street this patch is.
Turning the chat off on eso online will be great. Usually it’s ok, but getting tired of listening to people phone calls
