Fans Wonder if PS4 Pro Has Been Discontinued

Weird, as I thought with the advent of the PS5 the Pro was now the entry-level system.

Edit: Or, I should say, I imagined Sony would start to position the Pro as such.

Somewhat makes sense given the price point. Unless they do some sort of Pro Slim and drastically lower the price a bunch, PS5 digital would be a smarter buy for a lot of consumers.

Not to mention the market is getting flooded with used ones at this point. In my area, you can find them between $150-200 easily.

They should've discontinued the Slim ages ago and replaced it with the Pro at that price point.

@NathanUC honestly who would buy it. I think with the similarity in price between PS5 and the PS4 Pro, they should just focus on getting more PS5s out.

@theMEGAniggle that's what I mean when I say it would need a price drop. At $300-350, it seems silly to buy a Pro when a PS5 digital is $400. I understand that the difference of $50-100 isn't a small amount for a lot of people, but even if you just look at the library you automatically get when you play on PS5, it's tough to sell a Pro.

If it were $200-250 though, that's a much more compelling price for a Pro.

If that means more PS5s in the wild, I'm all in.

Pro Slim will be the main one come next year I have a feeling.

I love the PS4 Ecosystem of consoles. PS5 is going to have a tough job upping the ante.

I would think u would drop the base PS4 and keep the pro. Look at the Cyberpunk debacle, that should tell u the base is not worth keeping around.

It'd unlikely they have managed to cut manufacturing costs on that console enogh to justify pushing it all the way to $300 or less.

In a normal year, I would had expected a cheaper slim model to go out there, but given the way the XSS is priced, they would have to figure a way to charge $250 for the unit and still cut a profit. Either way I expect there to be restocking, Sony wants to sell as many consoles that can Miles, Sackboy, Horizon 2 and GoW Ragnarok, that means tons of PS4s.

It's been coming for a while, I had noticed retailers running out of stock and not replacing it for ages.

From a price point the Pro does not make any sense anymore.
Maybe with a heavy price cut... but that will eclipse the base model, so you need to drop that too.

The PS5 is BC with the PS4 there is no need to continue the sales of PS4 at this time. The PS5 is also just $100. more then the PS4 Pro. The PS5 digital is the same price as the PS4 Pro.

why would they currently bother still making PS4 pro when ps5 is always sold out and will continue to be sold out for a minimum of 6 months, makes zero sense in concentrating on manufacturing anything but ps5 especially when it is backwards compatible

Just want to point out that though the digital PS5 may seem like the discount console it's really not aimed at those on a budget. People on a budget have crappy internet and rely on the ability to trade in physical media rather than buy each new game at $60-$70 a pop.

These DE only consoles are for people who like the convenience of digital, or grandparents who are confused about what they are buying.

This leaves the PS4 for the budget minded, with both base and Pro models being considerably less than the standard PS5.

It makes sense that they would stop making the pro at some point before the slim. Just like with the one x and the series lines, they'd do better making it seem like the gap from the base consoles is larger than the mid gen uodates. I had a PS4 slim and a one S so the changes were immediately more noticeable to me than someone with one of the newer models last gen.

Why would anyone buy a new PS4 PR0? Like seriously it's the same price, maybe $50 cheaper, then the PS5 Digital and can't even remotely compete. Just seems like a wasted purchase unless you really really wanna play Afro Samurai 2

@__jamiie hahaha I still have the super slim PS3 in white and it’s the cheapest looking console I’ve ever owned (looks marginally better in white though). I suppose we should be grateful it wasn’t made out of enforced cardboard... it’s the only ‘slim’ version console I’ve ever owned and only bought because I was worried my launch PS3 was on its last legs.

As a PS3 Super Slim owner - boy does that console collect dust - I've been expecting them to make a PS4 Pro Slim w/ the PS4 Pro innards for around $250. Having 4 consoles to manufacture and market - PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5DE, PS5 - was never going to last long.

I always figured they'd drop the PS4 Pro b/c of the price differences but I always wanted them to drop the base PS4 and market the PS4 Pro, if not a PS4 Pro Slim, at a lower price. Why drop a console that can play games better and keep 1 that can't? But the prices probably dictate drop the Pro, keep the PS4 at $199.

I own the PS4 Slim, it's nice and quiet, never missed the Pro as I don't own a 4k TV and still don't see why I'd need a Pro w/o a 4k TV or HDR tv. Not sure why I need a PS5 w/o a 4k tv either, just Ratchet & Clank, that's it, and that game isn't enough to drop $500 on. It's not even worth looking for one.

But 4 consoles are too many.

Got my PS4 Pro last year on a sale. Saved 100 dollars on it and at that price I was pretty happy with it. Rather than discontinue it, they should just drop the price. Otherwise the Pro sits in an odd spot where it's too expensive to be much use as a budget console or an entry point.

It's only temporary so they can get as many ps5's out in the wild.Back in production late next year.

I wonder if this is a response to recent games (like Cyberpunk) running so bad its unplayable on PS4/XB1 so Sony deciding to distance themselves from PS4. Microsoft were very quick to distance themselves from XB1 support after the massive backlash of the July Halo Infinite demo.

All the comments about dropping the Slim and making the Pro the only model for PS4 available rrrrrrreally don't understand how the market works.

Firstly, the Pro was aimed at people who were happy to pay a premium for a 4K experience for maximum graphical fidelity. That market disappeared overnight when the PS5 released. The vast majority of people who would have been interested in the Pro will now prefer the PS5 for the exact same reason the Pro existed. Sure, the PS5 is currently as rare as unicorn poop, but that will change as production continues to ramp up.

Secondly, the PS4 console market will increasingly shift towards the casual now. Keeping the Slim in production will mean the PS4 achieves as low an cost entry point as possible. THAT is the market that PS4 is now geared towards.

Quite simple really.

@Culjoseth i dont think the cyberpunk debacle was so much the ps4's fault. CDPR admittited they didnt spend much time on the last gen versions and mainly concentrated on pc, ps5, and xbox sx. They probably should of delayed the ps4 version, but then u got idiots sending death threats and people acting like having to wait one more month is the end of the world, so we got a crap game.

@JonTheGod Except even the casuals have 4k tvs now. And the moment the PS5 was announced the Pro became the most affordable option that actually looks good on the now extremely common 4k tv.

Edit: Then again they're probably gonna look at what has historically sold the best and no doubt that's the base model. I just think it's gonna be a tougher sell going forward for the og ps4 given how old the tech is. Tech so dated they had to upgrade mid gen.

@ellsworth004 It was designed for the PS4 and Xbone, so I’m not sure what u mean. It started development at the beginning of the PS4 era. So it’s reasonable to say that it works best on next gen but it was not made for it. Yes it’s CDPRs responsibility to make it work and they got too ambitious but it works well on PS4 pro and PS5. To me that says, hey here is a great game that really doesn’t work on this one but it does on these! So let’s support these!

Predictable move, since Sony wants to move PS5’s why make more PS4’s when there’s plenty in the used market. Trying to sell my PS4 Pro hoping to help cut the burn in my wallet when I do find a PS5.

Of course by then, PS4 prices will likely tank further with examples of games like CP2072 in the coming year or two when market focus has shifted.

I did think that the PS5 would sort of replace the PS4 Pro if b/c was all that it was claimed to be. If Sony can pack the Pro innards into a sightly smaller, cheaper box (no sliding disc drive cover thanks!) then I could easily see it selling.

Logically you'd think that the PS4 Pro would have been the new "base" PS4, but then you'd have a situation where Sony have two 4k consoles competing against each other. So I can totally see why they'd want to make the difference a little more distinct going forward. Want budget focused 1080p gaming with a huge library? PS4. Want 4K with all the bells and whistles? PS5. Anything else would muddy that proposal considerably.

Completely unnecessary to YOU, sure, but plenty of people love theirs. I chose it over the other two models because it ran the quietest and easiest to find with higher capacity hard drives (so you can have all the games digitally), and keeping dB levels down is important for me.

No, the Cyberpunk debacle tells us that CD Projekt need to learn how to optimise their games to better fit the target hardware at launch, rather than releasing an unoptimised product and then patching it to work as it should have in the following months. Same mistake they made with The Witcher 3; oh yeah it runs great today, but back in 2015 when it came out it crashed all the time, had some weird UI choices and also some occasionally frustrating bugs. Exactly where Cyberpunk 2077 is right now.

Not accurate. The PS5 offers the ability to hook up an external USB3 capable drive for running PS4 games. It doesn't support PS5 games this way because they require higher I/O disc bandwidth for data streaming, whereas the PS4 game requirements are lower.

What makes you assume that? Plenty of people out there (including the "casuals") are running 1080p or 1440p panels. You shouldn't assume just because you have a 4K display and a few people you know do, that everyone does. Your experience is not everyone else's experience.

That's debatable. Have you even tried it on the PS4 Pro? I have. It's not as chuggy in busy sections of the game as the base models but believe me, it can still drop to 20fps in some places, just way less frequently and it requires higher NPC/vehicle density to do so. Oh and it tends to average one crash every two hours. So it's playable but faaaaaar from perfect.

Why would they waste money and effort redesigning the PS4 for a fourth time, though? The Pro always had problems keeping the temperatures down which is why it had three different revisions alone. Not cost effective or sensible to try and make a "Pro Slim", really... the third and final revision doesn't get as loud as the first two, anyway, so they don't really need to.

The performance and visual quality gains are still apparent on a 1080p TV, via things like Supersampling and Boost Mode although the latter is mostly deprecated now as most developers released "Pro" patches for their games which can help provide a more stable frame rate and superior visuals, and in some cases go from 30fps to 60fps. And believe me, anyone can see the difference between 1080p30 and 1080p60.

Additionally the PS4 Pro doesn't do "true" 4K anyway, it uses checkerboarding to bump up a sub-4K sized image via interpolation.

@zekepliskin No, the PS3 super slim was unnecessary.
I had one after my fat 60Gb model finally melted down after 5 years and it was quite quiet when running games from the HDD. However, running games from disc was a whole different ball game with the drive whizzing and whirring very audibly beneath that cheap sliding top slot.
Quietest PS3 was the 250x slim series. Still got mine (bought after flogging the super) and easily as quiet.

I already covered that I use it exclusively as it's the quietest one for running games from HDD, which is what I bought it for and how it is used. For me this makes it the best PS3 model overall. I've used the base phat PS3, PS3 slim and PS3 superslim over the years so I made my choice based on my experiences, not your experiences which are different but no more or less valid than mine. See what I mean? Demonstrates respect for the individual just making it clear an opinion is being stated, not a fact being given.

None of the other PS3 models suffered from this and the fact that they were selling it for almost the same price as the then discontinued Slim means, certainly in my eyes, it was an unnecessary revision.
If you like it that's great, I just don't think Sony did anyone any favours with that model.

@AJDarkstar Actually, they sort of did. The fans in the 250x series were much better and quieter than those in the original slim 2000 series, though then they seemed to regress with the later 3000 series (the one without all the nice operational LEDs)

@zekepliskin Everything you said makes sense, and if I needed a PS4 today I'd probably go for a Pro, but nothing you said justifies $350-$400 over my current PS4 Slim to me. If I had a 4k TV it might for the supersampling, but I would never spend $350 just to go from 30fps to 60fps and that's about it.

Those are reasons why I think Sony should discontinue the base PS4 and keep the PS4 Pro at a cheaper price, b/c discontinuing the better model and forcing people to get the Slim w/ it's inferior capabilities seems like a backwards move, but I suppose they couldn't drop the price on the Pro enough, and the PS5 is the better option.

I will spend $ on a PS5, but not a Pro, not for what you get above my PS4 Slim.

Oh I should point out that some of my personal perceived value of the PS4 Pro is that it can currently be picked up for less than £200 in excellent condition, used, in the UK. If buying one full price was the only option, I'd be in the "wait for a PS5" camp too! In fact the Pro I bought used is in better aesthetic condition than my Slim, came with another DS4 and also a copy of Horizon: Zero Dawn for £170, and it's a third revision "Red Dead" model CUH-72xxx which is the quietest Pro made - still not as quiet as a Slim though, but not much worse.

I agree, Supersampling isn't the biggest deal but I must say, my eyes do catch and appreciate the difference on a 55" TV panel, and the smoother frame rate/frame pacing of titles like The Witcher 3 and Bloodborne are slight but definitely noticeable; for whatever reason they just feel a little more fluid to play. Big disappointment that neither of those were upgraded to hit 1080p60 at least, but I think it's the CPU bottleneck problem; even with a higher clock speed the AMD Jaguar just can't help the GPU push pixels around fast enough to double the frame rate like that. That you can play those two titles and many more like it with such high fidelity for so little money, though, is really impressive.

In a way it looks like the PS5's "PS4 Mode" could be thought of as "PS4 Super Pro" since a lot of games can get bumped to 60fps, including The Witcher 3 if you play the unpatched disc version (not that I'd necessarily recommend that because it hits near Cyberpunk 2077 levels of bugginess on Version 1.00; everybody forgets that now because it was 5 years ago and the patches really sorted it out). That's not just backwards compatibility, it's backwards compatibility with forward-looking improvements, similar to how with Dolphin Emulator on a PC or Mac you can play GameCube games with better texture rendering for HD/4K screens and also "overclock" the virtual GameCube CPU to help with some games that were slow on the original hardware.

I have to hand it to Sony, when the PS5 is readily available and starts cropping up under RRP on the used market, I'd pick one up purely to have improved versions of PS4 era games on a system that runs even quieter than the PS4 Slim does. It looks like it's going to be the best way to experience the PS4 library. "PS5: More PS4 Than PS4, And Much More" 😂 confusing tagline though

@zekepliskin While I'm currently in no rush to buy a PS5, I'm not big into hunting, certainly not during a pandemic, I have been wondering just how obsolete the PS5 makes a PS4, and if I should just trade it in once PS5 become more readily available. I can't do that right now as I still don't have the PSVR adapter, and I like PSVR, Astrobot is awesome, and I still need Concrete Genie. But besides that a trade-in seems to be the way to go.

Or, I give my PS4 Slim to my son for his college dorm, also an option. But I think at this point the PS4 Pro is the odd man out, for me, and I guess for Sony as well.

If Sony officially announces PS4 Pro has been discontinued your used model may be worth more than you bought it for, good trade in on a PS5.

@zupertramp oh no I've read the article, what I have said still stands. If you want a next gen PS system, the PS5 is the entry-level . If you want an entry-level PS4, the base PS4 is your system. I don't think YOU understand the meaning of entry-level and going with what you believe entry-level to be, then the PS1 would be entry-level too.

@theMEGAniggle Isn't it more the case that the PS4 Slim is your system for an entry-level PS4? The base ones (2013) are often older than the Slim (2016), run hotter, more fan noise. A Slim can be partially disassembled to get into the heatsink and fan properly and remove all the dust and debris with a small brush and Q-Tips; they tend to run super quietly after that.

The PS1 had better and worse constructed models, although hardware wise they were all basically the same even when it was shrunk down to the PSOne model, which IIRC tended to last longer because the lasers in the old PS1 Phats were not resilient which is why some older gamers will remember running Phat PS1s upside down in some cases otherwise the games wouldn't boot, if the laser was wearing out. The PS2 had enough variations to warrant discussing which is the best as some are the Phat models which can take a HDD, and Slim which most can't - if I recall correctly, the PS2 Phat in Silver was the 5000x series and those ran the coolest/quietest even with a HDD because all Phat PS2 machines increased the fan speed at hardware level when a HDD was detected, so starting with the 5000x series with the quietest fan meant less noise with or without a HDD, than say a 3000x series would have even just without a HDD. The PS3 had the launch model with hardware back compat although software emu works okay on later PS3s so again, which is the best still applies. So yeah... long story short, PS4 Slim is arguably the best "entry level" PS4. 😊

@rjejr Well yeah unless you wanna pay scalper prices or dedicate arguably "wasted" hours to constantly and fruitlessly trawling online and brick-and-mortar stores to try and find the limited PS5 stock, you're better off using the time for other things (including gaming) and waiting 3-6 months for stock levels to adjust to the point where supply easily exceeds demand, causing price drops. One of the easiest signs for showing this has happened will be when used consoles are available for 40-60% of RRP because they will be available enough that they won't sell for more used than new, which is annoyingly currently happening. That last part might be closer to 12 months though. Depends how many people sell their PS5s as "unwanted Christmas presents" or because they do like the console but would rather sell it for more than it's worth and buy another one later. 😂

Good point! Right now, statistically, at the end of a console generation is typically the worst time to sell due to hitting that point of minimum desirability though, in my experience. The market is becoming flooded with them and they're regarded as "old" so they hold little value. They'll probably be worth more in 10 years time especially those models that are BNIB due to having passed from "old" to "retro" and being desirable again in the eyes of people looking back at their youth remembering them fondly and wanting to re-experience as an adult what they enjoyed so much as kids.

I'll probably hold on to the PS4 Pro though, because it represents the best of the PS4 generation to me - the most powerful one which of the Pros was also the quietest running even as compared to a base Phat one.

No, it might not be inaccurate based on your personal experiences, but for others it's way more common for them to see people using 1080p or 1440p displays, for example. A lot of people you know might have 4K displays, but that doesn't mean all gamers know lots of people that have 4K displays. @theMEGAniggle Yes indeed, it's the quietest one, the PS4 Slim, as long as you keep the heatsink and fan clean. And it doesn't require full disassembly to get into the heatsink like the base model and Pro do. As much as I love my third revision CUH-72xxxx Pro, I will happily admit the Slim is the best design when it comes to PS4.

@Culjoseth I would love to buy PS4 pro especially if it comes out slim. I'll wait until there is a bunch of PS5s in the wild. Right now we are seeing they are sold out a lot of the times. I just want a console with great graphics and performance 👍
