One of the biggest problems PlayStation 5 faces is an internal SSD with a limited amount of storage space. Sure, it allows for super fast loading, but it won't take long to fill up the 667GB you have access to. If you plan on playing PS5 games like NBA 2K21, for instance, you won't get too far.

One such fan has received their copy of the next-gen version of the basketball sim, and it eats up a monstrous amount of space on that all-important SSD. As shown in these images, the box states that the game requires a minimum of 150GB — that's just over a fifth of the available space for one game. There's the possibility that the installed game won't take up quite that much room, but even if it was reduced to 100GB, that's still a huge chunk of your SSD eaten away.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is similarly huge, requiring 133GB of the SSD's available space. If you were to install both of these games, they'd eat up a combined 42 per cent of PS5's onboard storage. Nearly half your space gone with just two titles!
Unfortunately, there are no ways to store PS5 games on anything other than the SSD. You currently can't install PS5 software on an external drive, even just for storage. Sony is looking into this possibility, and you'll be able to upgrade PS5's storage down the line, but for now you're going to have to juggle that precious SSD storage space as best you can.

Oh no. Oh no, oh no.
This is absolutely baloney! All the pre console talk of less space for games as they're optimised was utter nonsense. We essentially have just over half a TB, slightly more than the PS4 launch but with greatly inflated game install sizes to go with it...
Not sure if it's Take Two or Sony to blame for this but this is not good enough.
I don’t see this as such a bad thing. For people like myself with a large backlog on PS4 with full internal and external HDDs, having a storage system that will mean that it is only possible to have a handful of games on the go is a positive.
All that space to get screwed over on microtransactions?
@pip_muzz it's definitely Take Two they added the entire WNBA teams and legacy teams and a WNBA MyCareer ( even tho no ones gonna play it ) I mean my copy of 2k19 only eats like 60gb
The PS4 game is 75GB.
@pip_muzz
If demon soul is 60gb
And spiderman with MM is 105gb on ps5
It's they optimize! Look at nba 20k on ps4 it's 48.66 GB
Spiderman on ps4 is 45GB
4k tetures be big boys
This is just ridiculous. I'm even more sure of my decision to wait until there's a slim revision with larger storage.
Well 2k have to include a lot of ads. Plus don't forget they need to have whatever storefront they need for all those microtransactions in full 4k glory 👍
150GB for 10 players and a ball ? Do they know something about optimization ?
Glad i played under 50 GB PS4 games in disc.
Mostly my PS4 games are cartoonish games. 😉
Cartoonish graphics >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ultra 4K OMG Extreme HD realistic graphics.
Higher quality everything comes with a price.
So much for PS5 games being a smaller size. I just knew it was a pile of sh**e. It’s literally double the PS4 size and we have a smaller drive AND the expansions are only select drives which cost an absolute fortune. Poor show.
I imagine we will see this a lot on multi platform games, as much as you can talk about optimisation it’s going to be so much easier to optimise a platform exclusive than a multiplat. As I’ve said before I don’t think we are ready for the technology in the ps5, too many sacrifices need to be made to accommodate it and maybe for this gen we should have stuck to a standard SSD.
Hopefully they patch in being able to transfer games to external storage drive pretty quickly.
So if I'm understanding this correctly what you're saying is - "Don't play NBA 2K and COD" - I think this is a strategy I can get behind 100%
I assume this is an exception, but looks like we’ll be banging against the SSD after 6-15 games depending on size. More, I guess, if you can uninstall unused aspects like online multiplayer modes. Might be difficult for people who share their one console with multiple other people.
I bet each droplet of sweat on the players faces takes up one gigabyte
@nessisonett takes md back to the psp and vita memory card issue. I cant imagine a 1tb SSD suitable for the ps5 will be very cheap at all. So glad i didnt buckle and pre order.
PS5 is still a work in progress product..i'll wait some months and a couple firmware updates later to see where we going.
I know they kept the price down with less storage, but at least have an option for more space at launch. Inexcusable.
@Kidfunkadelic83 Ahh yes the Vita memory cards are an absolute con. One of the main reasons I installed CFW on mine, I have a 64GB micro SD in mine which barely cost anything and holds basically everything I need.
I know next-gen games data file will be bigger than current gen console, but why the heck the install is that big? 😅
@nessisonett The Vita was awesome but I don't understand why they want limited storage. I would have bought 200 games but due to my 8gb and 16gb cards bought maybe 25 altogether. I can see this happening with PS5 and that's not good.
Hahaha no, not gonna happen
@themcnoisy Considering this Digital PS5 is being pushed, I don’t get why limited storage is a problem they’re exacerbating. If anything, there should be plenty storage to encourage more PS Store sales. It’s just plain odd. That was definitely a reason the Vita didn’t take off in my opinion.
Let's see if they give players the chance to choose what to install, otherwise...
Can't wait to see GT7 file size after few patches... 200 GB?
@Vacuumator Don't hit me in the face with that stretch.
And that is just basketball stadium. Imagine size if game is as huge as olympic stadium?
I clearly see the future with "no limits" in number of discs... My four disc Final Fantasies are shaking... 😂
Sony... Everything was going SO so well. What the heck. Over this last week its gone from being a seemingly perfect future proof god level system to a "unfinished product in beta" that a lot are now GLAD they didn't preorder, and sadly enough i think im one of those people. Im a bit crushed. Hope sony is playing attention and turns this around and does what needs to be done.... For the players
I love how everyone in this thread is blaming Sony for 2Ks inability to actually optimize the games file size! Plenty of other AAA games are rolling in around 50 or 60 GB
Gamers wanted faster load times and better graphics these come at a cost. Both Sony and Microsoft knew that gamers would not pay £650 for a cosnole with more storage so this is the result.
Thats a lot of gb.man sony should of offer a 1tb just like the ps4 pro from the get go.word up son
Wow, the only time people comment on NBA2K is when the article is about MTX or something else negative. The review itself only got a handful of comments but that's the way things go around here.
Don't forget NBA 2k21 is not just a basketball game. It has some kind of PlayStation Home type multiplayer HUB in the game as well. With what looks like tons of options and customizations and things to do. And all of those need higher textures and what not.
@Caliburn08 "it's definitely Take Two they added the entire WNBA teams and legacy teams and a WNBA MyCareer"
If it didn't have them the file size would be what 135gb? Unless you know exactly the space they take up. Complaining about 2k21 having more content 🤷
@thefourfoldroot It would be great if we can uninstall parts like you said. That would be huge. I almost never play games online and just want the single player offline component.

The rest of this comment has been intentionally left blank.
Dang. I think it's terrible optimization honestly. This and COD just don't optimize anything. Heck, they probably port their games over to next-gen without removing the extra files for loading time improvement. I'm glad I don't play 2K, as this is just a sham.
@__jamiie Agreed, same here.
@Unlucky13
That’s the design. COD have already stated you can uninstall various parts. It’s just up to the devs. Or more likely the publishers who, for example, might not want the multiplayer aspects to be uninstalled as that drives engagement and Mictotrnsactions. I suspect games like cod will eventually sell their online multiplayer mode as a stand-alone.
Yeah, it's a good thing that I'm not interested in the 2K sports games nowadays. The only ones I played were NBA 2K9 and 2K16.
Looks like I'll have to complete a game then move onto a new one. Finally super focused and not multi-tasking. Reminds me of 16-bit days where I could complete majority of games.
@bbq_boy
Yeah, back when games were expensive as hell. Lol couldn’t afford to have more than one at a time.
I remember my dad dropping 115 US dollars on Chrono Trigger for me.
