Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered PS5 PlayStation 5 1

Insomniac Games is probably the busiest studio in games right now, as it’s working on PlayStation 5 titles Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart simultaneously. But this is one of the most industrious teams in the industry, and it wasn’t going to stop there: the company also announced overnight that it’s remastering Marvel’s Spider-Man for Sony’s next-gen system, and fans can purchase it alongside the new game as part of an Ultimate Edition package. The new version will include the complete original campaign alongside the trio of City That Never Sleeps DLC campaigns.

This is not just your average remaster, though, as community director James Stevenson explained on the PlayStation Blog: “The remaster for the PS5 is no simple up-res, as many of the game’s art assets have been completely updated to take advantage of the PS5 console’s horsepower. You’ll see better-looking characters with improved skin, eyes, hair, and facial animation, including our new, next-generation Peter Parker.” Presumably, it’ll be the same character model as the inevitable Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

“You’ll also see ray-traced reflections and ambient shadows, improved lighting, more pedestrians and vehicles stretching further into the distance, and the same optional performance mode offered on Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, allowing you to finally play the game at a targeted 60 frames-per-second frame rate,” Stevenson continued. “We’ll be supporting near-instant loading, 3D audio, and the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback. Lastly we’re adding three amazing new Spider-Man suits, new photo mode features, and even new Trophies for those of you looking to Platinum the game all over again.”

It sounds like Insomniac Games has really gone the extra mile here, but it does of course all come with the caveat that you probably won’t be able to upgrade your existing PlayStation 4 copy for free. We’ll check in with Sony to double-check the situation, but as far as we understand, only Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is eligible for a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade. You’ll be able to buy the spin-off alongside this remaster for $69.99 on PS5, though, which is obviously expensive – but not outrageous for effectively two games.
