Best PS4 Sports Games PlayStation 4 Guide 1

What are the best sports games on the PS4? Whether you’re a die-hard footie aficionado or a casual basketball watcher, there’s no question that sports games are among the most popular on consoles these days. Whether it’s hardcore simulations or more arcade-like adaptations, we’ve compiled the very best sports games on the PlayStation 4 – and you can enjoy practically all of them without having to break a sweat. Of course, if motorsport is more your thing, then be sure to refer to our Best PS4 Racing Games guide.

20. Mutant Football League (PS4)

Publisher: Digital Dreams Entertainment / Developer: Digital Dreams Entertainment
Release Date: 19th Jan 2018 (USA) / 19th Jan 2018 (UK/EU)

Inspired by EA’s old SEGA Genesis game, Mutant Football League adopts an apocalyptic look at gridiron, where quaterbacks can quite literally be slaughtered when sacked. It’s buggy and imbalanced, but American football fans will appreciate the use of puns, while the fast-paced arcade action harks back to the halcyon days of NFL Blitz.

19. AO Tennis 2 (PS4)

Publisher: Bigben Interactive / Developer: Big Ant Studios
Release Date: 11th Feb 2020 (USA) / 9th Jan 2020 (UK/EU)

It’s a mini-miracle like Andy Murray’s magic hip, but the PS4 finally has a competent tennis title in the form of AO Tennis 2. While Big Ant’s sophomore effort may play a few unforced errors, it also hits plenty of winners with strong presentation, a big emphasis on user generated content, and an entertaining morality system that adds plenty of personality to the release’s well-executed campaign. It’s not the most polished sports package on this list, but fans of green fuzzy balls should not miss out.

18. Windjammers (PS4)

Publisher: Dotemu / Developer: Dotemu
Release Date: 29th Aug 2017 (USA) / 29th Aug 2017 (UK/EU)

There are a dearth of new arcade sports games on the PS4, but fortunately legendary SNK Frisbee flinger Windjammers has stood the test of time. Effectively a 90s-themed version of Pong, this cult classic sees you sprinting around colourful courts tossing flying discs at a range of fashionable foes. This faithful conversion squeezes in online play, making it a must-own for both newcomers and long-time fans of the original.

17. The Golf Club 2019 Featuring PGA Tour (PS4)

Publisher: 2K Sports / Developer: HB Studios
Release Date: 28th Aug 2018 (USA) / 28th Aug 2018 (UK/EU)

Much like NBA 2K Playgrounds 2, publisher 2K Sports joined the project towards the end of The Golf Club 2019’s development cycle. In this instance, HB Studios had to shoehorn in the PGA Tour license, which it acquired midway through production. It’s a testament to the overall quality of The Golf Club’s gameplay that this instalment is still so entertaining, then – but future iterations should really drive this franchise up this list like a particularly sweet tee off shot.

16. OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood (PS4)

Publisher: Roll7 / Developer: Roll7
Release Date: 3rd Mar 2015 (USA) / 4th Mar 2015 (UK/EU)

There’s no Skate 4 on the PS4 (yet) and the less said about Tony Hawk the better, which means that Roll7’s OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood is just about your only real skateboarding option this generation. Fortunately, the sequel’s stick flicking controls feel just as tactile as in the original, and with more combo options and challenges than ever before, working your way through this two-dimensional title is anything but a grind.
