It's been made official: PlayStation is the best-selling home video game console brand ever. Across all its major platforms (not counting portables), Sony has sold over 450 million units, comfortably dominating the home console space over its 25-year existence. The fact has now been acknowledged by Guinness World Records, with the establishment recognising the achievement with one of its signature certificates.
Now seems like as good a time as any to receive this record. Today, Sony is celebrating the 25th anniversary of PlayStation, so we'll bet Jim Ryan and all at the company will be chuffed to bits with this. Stick that certificate on the fridge, everyone; you've earned it.

Can't wait for the inevitable angry Nintendo fans to show up and down play this.
Congrats, Sony. (:
The best console always win (at sales) 😃
@Lando_ Also, congrats Lando (well, your namesake)
PlayStation is the g.o.a.t. i been with PlayStation since day 1 in September 9.1995 in new york.congratulations.word up son
@Gamer83 they already are on Twitter, completely ignoring that it says "HOME CONSOLE" and doesn't included handhelds because that's a separate market
also if anyone is wondering i did the math and using the numbers available right now then Nintendo has sold roughly have sold 300.8 million home consoles and XBOX has sold an ESTIMATED 154.9 million home consoles (as they wont release XB1 sale numbers this is working on the estimated 46 million they have sold)
Congrats to Sony!
I won't be doing any chest-thumping, as I am a fan of all gaming, but it is a well-deserved award.
Sony came in at a time when developers were tired of living under Nintendo's dismissal of progressing hardware trends and almost dictator-like rule over third-party development and "matured" the gaming landscape. It managed to do what Sega couldn't and humbled the Mario juggernaut. It was no small feat.
Well done, Sony.
I look forward to what healthy competition will bring from Microsoft and Nintendo as they strive to make it to the top (or any other company willing to take on the "Big Three").
They used VGChartz.
Congrats to Sony, but man 450 million sure is a lot of consoles.
@playstation1995
Same here, brother man. In the beginning, it was the Saturn or Playstation. We made the right decision. Word up.
To be honest, I am not surprised. Despite Nintendo making consoles for many more years, the home console wasn't much more than a 'kids' toy. Sony changed that with the Playstation, targetting the teen and young adult market - the demographic with the most disposable income.
Sony supported all their consoles long into the next gen lifecycle too and all but the 3rd sold more than 100m units - the only Nintendo console to do so was the Wii. The NES sold ~62m, SNES, Ninty's next best sold 49.1m which wasn't bad for Kids toys when really the only competition came from Sega.
Sony's Playstation made consoles cool for 20-somethings and has been at the forefront of gaming. No disrespect to Nintendo, but their consoles, whilst innovative, haven't really been up to the task of delivering all the latest games. The Wii was a big success because it didn't just appeal to gamers as the Wii Sports was seen as good way to get old people moving for example or those looking to get fit at home as well as appeal to anyone who couldn't get to grips with a controller. My daughters 'hated' gaming but had a Wii for fitness, for dancing and house party fun.
Anyway, competition is a good thing so I don't want to see any company 'fail'. Sony have done a great job with bringing gaming to the mainstream and being at the forefront too - not just in hardware but in game development as well with stories and characters to rival any Hollywood blockbuster.
I look forward to the next gen, the next 25yrs (if I live that long LOL) and continuing to game on Playstation.
@BAMozzy that WiiU did better than I thought 😉
