Ghost of Tsushima (PS4)

Open world games often can't compete with more focused experiences when it comes to visuals, but Ghost of Tsushima breaks the rule. While it sacrifices some smaller details along the way, there's no denying this is one beautiful game. It's the environment that really stands out. Combining wonderful weather and wind effects with gorgeous natural scenery, the landscape is constantly stunning. It may not be the most photorealistic game on PS4, but it more than makes up for it with exquisite art direction.

Gran Turismo Sport (PS4)

Nobody understands lighting quite like Polyphony Digital, so it’s no surprise that Gran Turismo Sport borders on photo-realistic a lot of the time. While its commitment to 60 frames-per-second means that competitors have caught up, no one quite models cars like creator Kazunori Yamauchi’s team, and the highs in this online-focused simulation racer surpass pretty much anything else on the PS4 – it’s just inconsistency that lets it down.

The Order: 1886 (PS4)

It may have been a dud, but the fact that The Order: 1886 is even on this list years after its original release it testament to its technical achievements. Set in an alternate history Victorian London, everything about this cinematic single player adventure – from its colour grading to its character models – looks absurd. It could be argued that developer Ready at Dawn should have invested the same amount of time into gameplay design as it did textile textures, but it probably wouldn’t have made this article without the studio’s absurd eye for detail.

Marvel's Spider-Man (PS4)

Insomniac Games once again knocked it out of the park with its biggest game yet, Marvel's Spider-Man, and not least in the graphics department. The studio adds a consistently impressive open world map to typically top notch animation, and the result is fantastic. Swinging through the city at high speeds, the game never misses a beat, always looking like a million dollars. It's not quite as realistic as some of the other games on the list, but the game's artists have proven once again that the developer can go toe-to-toe with the very best. Honourable mention must also go to Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which has a similarly sublime winter world.

Cuphead (PS4)

Cuphead is obviously aiming for something totally different from the other games on this list, but its visuals are staggering nonetheless. Rather than shoot for realism, this 2D run-'n'-gun apes the style of 1930s animation, and it's an incredible success in this regard. The hand-drawn animations, watercolour backdrops, various effects, and larger than life characters all work to make this one of the most visually striking games on PS4. A knockout.
