10. Until Dawn (PS4)

Supermassive Games made a real name for itself with Until Dawn. This narrative adventure game effectively lets you partake in a schlocky teen horror movie, where your choices will have potentially grisly effects on the ensemble cast. With atmosphere to spare, lovably corny performances, and a highly replayable adventure full of outcomes to discover, it's no wonder this game is such a cult hit.

9. Resident Evil (PS4)

The remaster of arguably one of the greatest remakes of all time: there may have only been six years between Resident Evil and its jaw-dropping GameCube revival, but Capcom packed an entire generation of progress into this technical tour-de-force. The game’s mansion remains utterly iconic, a character unto itself, and with tense survival action and some smartly designed puzzles, this PS4 port is a must-play if you missed it in 2002.

8. Resident Evil Village (PS4)

It may not look quite as good as its PS5 counterpart, but Resident Evil Village is still a sublime experience on PS4. The follow-up to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard sees Ethan Winters return having been kidnapped to a remote European village, once again told from the first-person perspective. Werewolves are the main enemy he faces this time, but the game still gets creepy, bloody, and gooey when it wants to. This is Capcom horror at its absolute peak, representing one of the best original Resident Evil entries since the PS2's Resident Evil 4.

7. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (PS4)

Following a string of disappointing releases, Capcom got its beloved horror franchise back on track with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Set inside the dreadful house of the Baker family, Ethan Winters (that's you) must fight for his life and escape his captors. It marks a return to true survival horror, and ups the tension with a first-person perspective. If you want to make things even more claustrophobic, you can strap on a PSVR headset and play the entire thing in VR. Resi 7 drags the series back to its roots and sets the mood for what would come next.

6. Inside (PS4)

Inside is 2D platforming perfection, but it’s the ending that we all remember it for. After two or so hours of impressive puzzle-solving and hints that something isn’t quite right, the game goes off the rails with a 20-minute sequence that is perhaps one of the most memorable of the PS4 generation. An incredible game that has cemented Playdead’s position among the gaming greats.

5. Resident Evil 4 Remaster (PS4)

What more can be said about Resident Evil 4? Now available on PS4, this is an absolute classic third-person action game, combining the series' horror themes with blood-pumping combat sequences. While it shows its age today, there's no questioning this game's importance and influence, and it remains a fun, intense experience whether you've played it a thousand times or never before.

4. Death Stranding (PS4)

Death Stranding is Hideo Kojima's first game after going independent, and it's a suitably crazy debut. You play Sam Porter Bridges, a delivery man in an age where the world has been devastated by the titular event. Charged with reconnecting a fractured United States, it's down to you to traipse across the land, delivering important supplies and hooking up remote outposts to a shared network. It's unlike anything else, with your biggest obstacles being the uneven terrain and fragile goods on your back. Online connectivity populates the game with useful equipment and structures created by other players, so you're all in it together. Death Stranding is an acquired taste, but its bonkers story and tranquil gameplay help it stand out.

3. The Last of Us: Part II (PS4)

How do you follow up one of the best games in the last decade? The Last of Us: Part II had a lot to live up to, with many fans of Joel and Ellie's odyssey protesting the very notion of a sequel. However, Naughty Dog is Naughty Dog, and the studio delivered big time. Following the footsteps of Ellie and Abby in their parallel quests for vengeance, Part II not only advances the storyline of fan favourite characters, but it fills out the original story with wider context, muddying the waters of morality even further in this post-apocalyptic world. Add to that some of the best third-person gunplay in the business, best-in-class visuals, and peerless accessibility features, and you have yourself something pretty special.

2. Resident Evil 2 (PS4)

Resident Evil 2 is the quintessential remake. Understanding what made the PS1 classic so unforgettable back in 1998, it faithfully recreates that survival horror experience and takes it to new heights two decades later. The Raccoon Police Department has never looked better, but the undead zombies it houses are more frightening than ever. Mr X takes on a new lease of life as he patrols Raccoon City, but the sort of weaponry at your disposal might just be enough to match him. It may leave some features and enemies by the wayside, but Resident Evil 2 successfully brings back that classic, memorable experience — turning it into an instant classic on PS4.

1. The Last of Us Remastered (PS4)

Some of the finest of feathers in Naughty Dog's well-groomed plume, The Last of Us Remastered is not just an improved version of one of PlayStation's greatest ever games – it's arguably one of the most impressive releases of all time. An all-rounder that marries tense gameplay with compelling characterisation and sublime presentation, Joel and Ellie's cross-country escapade is as sombre as it is heart-warming.
