Days Gone is a monster in pretty much every sense of the word, with the title taking up an outstanding 67GB of hard drive space. This is the full size of the title once its day one patch has been installed, which itself is around 20GB. Considering the sheer amount of pre-rendered video that’s in the game, it’s not an enormous surprise – although those of you with 500GB consoles may want to look at picking up an external HDD for your PS4.
Has the file size got you frothing like a Freaker, or have you got used to these humongous hard drive hogs now? Use your last bullet clearing some space in the comments section below.

Scary to think how big next-gen games are gonna be.
I think my copies of Forza Horizon 4, Forza 7, and Gears 4 on my PC are well over 100 GB each. I am getting used to large file sizes, but some of these are brutal.
Mandatory patch though?
@oatmealwarrior92 Sekiro was only 12 or 13GB, so I'm certain games can be a lot smaller if the devs want it to be.
Glad I slapped in a 2TB internal day one on my Pro.
Nowadays this isn't a big surprise. Seeing the headline I was honestly expecting something more along the lines of RDR2's 100gig.
Just think, it was a mere 12 1/2 years ago that the PS3 launched with a 60 GB HDD (and a cheaper 20 GB model!).
I just got a 1TB hard drive. Bring it on.
not a suprise.
6 hours of cutscenes (not a bad thing) and those big hordes do
add up.
ps5 games could (will) be well over 60/70GB standard.
well the open world games atleast.
@lacerz remember when gta v's 8GB had people suprised?
times and games sure do change.
This is madness.
Yeah that's not too bad. Not long to wait now.
I've almost used up 5tb of hhd, and the games just keep on growing 😂
I have the space ready, looking forward to it.
My OG PS4 is ready.
@Octane You can play the game without the patch I think but obviously it fixes some things.
Is it bad that I look at this and think it's not that big a file?
@get2sammyb I wonder what the 20GB is for then! That's nearly half thr size of the base game.
I just wish I knew if it's going to be a hit so I can pre-order now and start downloading early. Sucks that reviews are coming a day before release.
I got a 3T external HDD as soon as Sony gave the option to use them. I haven't had to delete a single game since. Bring it on
this news was on a dutch site last week. i've had nothing but problems with PS4's external HDD support, eventually lost the entire drive, 50 games, about 1.5Tb worth.. news that PS5 will have a specialised SSD means it'll be a lot less easy to replace the internal drive with a bigger capacity one. :-/
After Final Fantasy XV nothing impresses me anymore
Uninstall something. Install this. No biggie
"Considering the sheer amount of pre-rendered video that’s in the game, it’s not an enormous surprise"
Pre-rendered FMVs seem so archiac these days. Real-time cutscenes all the way.
I still don't really know anything about this game.
20GB day one patch?! Definitely not buying this now.
@RainbowGazelle most big open world games have big patch’s on release now and days.
@get2sammyb So there is no official info about the game being played just from the disc install?
I hope the patch are 4K graphics or something like that.
@WrightStuff You're not going to buy a game you wanted because of its patch?
I fully recommend investing in an external hdd. It's not expensive and made my collection a lot easier to manage. You could get an external ssd I suppose for extra speed but not sure about compatibility, plus ssds are usually pretty small. That brings me on to my next point, Sony confirmed ps5 will have an ssd but if you look at ssds they are very expensive for anything above 750gb or so. Does anyone know the size of the ssd going in the ps5?
One more thing: not buying a game you want because it uses a lot of memory is only hurting yourself. No matter how well optimised it is, a big game uses big memory. Everything worth having has a price.
@oatmealwarrior92 did I Not read the ps5 is only gonna have a 1TB SSD? This again is WAY too small I ran outta room on my 1tb pro HD the day I got it after. Lucky now I have a 2TB SSD Plus the pro 1TB so i'm ok. PS5 needs 2TB MINIMUM.
@Infinite_J_777 1TB SSD in ps5 (not big enough)
@Mindphyx77822 thanks man, and yup that's pretty small (that's what she said?) hopefully we will be able to use externals again.
@oatmealwarrior92
Yup, hopefully external harddrives are supported for PS5 at the start. I'll be investing in a 6TB, maybe higher.
@lacerz And both had fully replaceable HDDs straight out of the box, while the other company was charging $200 for a proprietary 60gb HDD and $150 for a 20gb proprietary HDD....
@__marc
True...but Sony is no saint when it comes to proprietary items that should have used universal goods available much cheaper. The Vita memory cards are a prime example of that.
Wonderful, have a 4TB drive but I filled that last week! When I bought it i never expected to have to worry about space and deleting / reinstalling games - got that wrong and still have another 1.5 years before PS5 so only going to get worse. Guess the next one will need to be 8TB or more....
@WrightStuff you have completely lost me the majority of gaming works this way now.
@Mindphyx77822 where did you read that?
@WrightStuff The Division 2 had a 50 GB day one patch & sure I could list loads if I could be bothered checking.
Sony has a brilliant track record with 1st party games so I have faith.
I remember being the coolest kid on the block, because our pc had an hdd of 100MB, instead of the then standard 40. Master race!!!
