We sincerely hope that you haven't used up all of your hate on Konami over the last couple of months, because we've got a corker for you this afternoon. Translated by NeoGAF member HGH, the Japanese company's new CEO reckons that "mobile is where the future of gaming lies". Surely you can see where this is going?
"Our main platform will be mobiles", Hayakawa told Nikkei Trendy Net, adding that Konami will follow "the pay-as-you-play model". We can already hear the screams from some of you reading this, but the despair's probably about to get a whole lot worse. The CEO then goes on to say that "we hope that our overseas games such as Metal Gear Solid V and Winning Eleven (Pro Evolution Soccer) continue to do well, but we are always thinking about how to push our franchises onto mobile there too."
Of course, mobile gaming is a massive deal in Japan, where its impressive popularity has done a lot to damage the console gaming industry as a whole. As such, it at least makes some sense for Konami to focus its future efforts on mobile platforms, but there's no doubt that Western gamers will find this news tough to swallow - ourselves included.

R.I.P.
Wow. Just wow.
FFS...
It's obvious that without Kojima, MGS will die. So nobody cares.
Incredible. Konami officially wins the Most Hated Company award.
Konami's doing the same thing now that Data East did back then before going bankrupt in 2003.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!
''mobile is the future'', well screw you konami, normaly I wouldn't do this but I can not support a company who thinks a market that is flooded with c**p and is being chocked to death by said c**p is the future of gaming
I will now be cancelling my pre-order of The Phantom Pain, and never buying a konami product again
I can not and WILL not support the death of gaming that the casual mobile market represents
I would also like to appologise for my bad language in this post
@FullbringIchigo I will buy MGS5 not because it's Konami game, but because it's Kojima's game. =).
Oh dear...
@Gemuarto well it was until konami removed his name from it
this may sound nasty but konami have been effing up big time for a while now so I hope they crash and burn and their IP's get sold to publisher's who will actualy treat them with respect
Mobile is making all those suits go money crazy. 50 million? NOT ENOUGH IWANTS 50 BILLIONGIMMEGIMMEGHArghhh
@FullbringIchigo I don't think they can spoil the game in this 3-4 month till release.
Hubris like this never pays off. Konami are digging their own grave.
Goodbye Konami!!!!
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, anyone?
Konami -__- EA was my worse company, but I think you have topped it, for all the bull EA pulls like DLC etc. least they actually don't destroy their franchises (well thats debatable I guess...) and put them on mobile only, because 'its the future', just go away Konami, will never forgive you for cancelling Silent Hills (Kojima + Del Toro & Reedus = AWESOME)
Please watch the language -Tasuki-
Mobile gaming is very much like the Wii, popular for awhile, but mark my works...it will implode.
lol.
done.
that is all.
ridiculous.
This is the point at which the whole situation has become so ridiculous that I've actually gone full circle with how I feel about it - I am once again half inclined to think this is all just some big joke from Kojima. I just struggle to believe it could be anything but.
I don't think I can remember any other time where one company has taken so many steps, so quickly, to completely alienate and infuriate their audience. It's almost all been too perfect, even down to the timing of it all, leaving just enough time for people to start to cool off only to then come out with something else which seems almost purposefully geared to rile the public.
I'm sure it's just wishful thinking, but sometimes this whole thing does just seem to be too perfectly engineered to generate ill will. Why would any right-minded company / set of execs do this to themselves and their brand...?
@SteveButler2210 I don't think it's a joke, I think the main problem is they are too focused on making the big wigs and share holders happy than actualy trying to make the consumer happy, which is dumb because it's the consumer that actualy buys their products
Welcome to the future of gaming where we design a 30 second game that repeats itself forever, contains adverts but is FREE. That is if you don't mind waiting days for things to happen and have no interest in getting near the end or they'll charge you hundreds of pounds for gems making it more expensive than every console game you've ever bought put together but nowhere near as fun as any one of them.
Die in a fire, Konami.
Ok... Please understand me when i say this.
Konami you dumb little piece of #&@#^$&@#&^$&#@(^$&#@(^$&#@(^$&@#($^&&@#^$&@#(^$&@#^$&@#^$**&^&$^^&%@&%&^#&%^#$(^%&&^(&!&@)&$^&#@&%!&(&)&!(#^%#&()&($)^&!@&($)&#($^!()$&#!(&$^ and your &(@)&#(^%@(#&$(!&(@#&%(@)&(@#&$(@#
Alright....that all is gibberish anyway cuz i litterally cannot put into normal words how ANGRY i am at Konami lately. THIS REALLY MAKES ME MAD. WHY KONAMI WHY?
You know Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain will be my Last Konami game.. I miss the old konami but i am boycotting them. IM DONE.
Mobile Master Race
@Alpha same here
also I'm pretty sure @#&^$&#@(^$&#@(^$&#@ involves the head of konami, a red hot poker, a 10 minute time limit and a certain orifice that I shall not name
This is just sad, I remember when Konami was alot better.
Hopefully they'll come to their senses eventually, something tells me they have been smoking some weird stuff lately lol.
I kinda figured that Konami was moving into the mobile market at least that is what it sounded like from Koji Igarashi. It's a shame really but he said it best Konami is a business first and foremost their purpose is to make money and if they have to do that by following the latest money making trends then that's what Konami and any business will do.
I've said it jokingly in the past but I mean it now... Sony needs to sign Kojima and pry Metal Gear from Konami.
Certain companies can and will thrive in mobile. But Konami does not make many good games anymore. And franchises like MGS are NOT the type to appeal to the mobile crowd.
Sure, you CAN succeed with mobile, but the likelihood is far greater that they will bankrupt themselves.
@Gamer83 If only it was that easy. Kojima will probably do like Iga and Kifune did and just make a game that we all know is Metal Gear even though it's a different name.
I really didn't care that much about Kojima leaving but this is totally unacceptable for me. Seriously Metal Gear, Castlevania, Gradius, Pro, Silent Hill, Suikoden... All of them are some of my favourite games ever. I really wonder if mobile games produce that big of an income and how popular they are in Japan. Surely Vita and 3ds are popular but are android games that popular there? I now a lot of people that enjoy these free games like Candy Crash (?) or Temple Run but just spend zero real euros on them.
Here's hoping kojima can create a spiritual successor to metal gear solid then because I never game on my phone, handhelds yeah but never my phone because they are usually cash grab throwaway games
Great news mgs6 on vita!!!! Unfortunately the big money is in micro transactions on mobile, however and this is the point these big companies are missing, they can make a shed load by just making games again, maybe not billions like a pseudo gambling mechanic game like candy crush but millions. With no risk of being taken to court by Children with severe addiction dysfunction. But who would do that when you can rip off a pc game from 1992 and whack monetisation all over it?
The future of gaming, cheap derivative rubbish trading on once great video games, and either full of adverts, or micro transactions designed to create as much money as possible.
Wow its 2012 isn't it
Lmfao
Snaaaaaaaaaake!
I guess it makes sense for them if thats where they are seeing the best return. I have played a few mobile games over the years but its no substitute for Console or PC gaming imo. I'll still be getting MGS V as it looks like it could be a damn good game, plus I own all the previous MGS games.
I've actually enjoyed Konami's games over the years and actually wish them luck. Who am I to dictate which way a company should go in this ever changing gaming industry. Too many studios I grew up with over the years have had to close there doors recently because big AAA's are far to expensive to make and sometimes show little return when compared to other models.
Good Bye Konami.. we won't miss you. Have fun with your mobile in Japan.
I guess Konami is trying to beat EA. In you know...being the worst company.
@Gamer83 I'm an Xbox / PC guy and that sounds like a dream. If only...
@Link41x I don't think it will implode like the Wii did as the platform is actually stable, but I doubt it will remain this profitable forever, and it's already oversaturated. Konami's crazy if they think they're better off there, but then again, look at how stupid they've been lately. I'm sure somebody will happily recruit their talent [Kojima].
@Tasuki
Seems simple enough to me... Drop the VR nonsense nobody cares about, take that money, sign Kojima and co. and buy Metal Gear from Konami. Everybody is happy.
@whywai88
I wouldn't go that far. I'm as disgusted with Konami as anybody lately, maybe even moreso, but I wouldn't say they won't be missed. I miss the old Capcom and Konami very, very much. Provided me with so many great memories of over the years. It's a shame what the dipsh*ts in suits have done.
PS Vita is mobile right? right? Surely that is what they mean....
Oh no........
Konami were behind some of the games that were an influential part of my childhood and young adulthood... Personally, I'm gutted at this news.
Looks like EA end up winning the football franchise contest by default... and just as Konami were finally getting it right with PES.
Looks like the only other thing I can say on the subject is this...
"Sayōnara Konami - Thanks for the memories."
"p.s. I won't wish you the best for the future - doubt there'll be much of one for you..."
Well....looks like this is going to come true...
