This guy's not happy about the news

Following on from the revelation that Sony Santa Monica’s upcoming God of War: Ascension will feature eight-player multiplayer, director Todd Papy has revealed that the game’s single-player will be a “little shorter” than previous titles in the franchise.

Speaking with Eurogamer.net, he said:

We've mapped out everything and given time estimates. It'll be pretty damn close.

Lead combat designer Jason McDonald added that single-player will not suffer as a result of the multiplayer inclusion.

He explained:

We didn't want to sacrifice single-player for multiplayer, neither did we want to tack [the latter] on. We’re definitely going full force on both.

While Santa Monica is currently being coy about Ascension's single-player campaign, Papy couldn't resist sharing a handful of details. As previously teased, the game will see players assume the role of a younger Kratos who is desperate to break the blood oath that binds him to Ares.

Papy continued:

It's the youngest you've ever seen him. We want to show a different side to him, bring more of the humanity back.

It’s not yet clear how the developer will achieve that, but Papy did confirm in a live stream earlier today that we will get to see a glimpse of Kratos before he murdered his family.

It seems like Sony is saving the big single-player reveal for E3, though. We can't wait.
