Guerrilla Games' first attempt at the open world RPG has left genre veterans looking out-of-touch. While it may lack imagination in some areas of its design, Horizon: Zero Dawn executes its ideas so flawlessly that it can be forgiven for not reinventing the post-post-apocalyptic wheel. Aloy's adventure is one filled with mystery, spanning that of the current climate's tribal politics all the way back to the fall of mankind as we know it. A tight narrative is tied together by combat befitting of a third-person action game, and it's all wrapped up with presentation so polished it resembles a more linear release.

From Software's punishing format may have been old hat by the time Dark Souls III deployed, but even three entries in, the studio's stranglehold on great level design remains as strong as ever. The final part of the trilogy, this uber-polished action RPG possesses the same stunning art and deliberate combat as its predecessors, but it's the abundance of fanservice that will most please those who've prayed at the altar of the sun since the series' very start.
As far as MMOs go on PS4, nothing quite lives up to the elegance and polish of Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn. Boasting a lush world, top notch gameplay, and a stunning soundtrack, it's a huge RPG that you can get lost in for days on end, with or without friends by your side.
When it comes to endless character progression and loot, nothing measures up to Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition. An action RPG that offers what is in theory an infinite amount of stuff to do, it's a blast whether you're playing with friends or you're grinding through the demon hordes all on your own. Supremely polished and intuitive, it's hands down one of the tightest titles on PS4.
It took an entire generation to actually happen, but Mass Effect Legendary Edition finally gives us what we've always wanted: a remastered collection of the original Mass Effect trilogy. Commander Shepard's sci-fi escapades still hold up, with a cast of excellent characters carrying a three whole games' worth of memorable missions. Legendary Edition does a great job of bringing some much needed polish to the first Mass Effect, while also adding a welcome sheen to its sequels. An absolute must for anyone who's looking to become absorbed in a spacefaring adventure.
