Topic: Why dedicated gaming consoles - and platform holders who care - are good

You can call this a rant if you want, but if you take a look at the difference between Injustice 2 on console and Injustice 2 on mobile - two games with the same name, by the same company, similar graphics and the same engine even.... but the mobile version has nothing holding it back so it has become almost completely microtransaction based - to the point where there basically isn’t any “game” left in the mobile version, just avenues to tempt you to spend money. I’m 100% convinced that (a) this is way more profitable than a tradition game, and (b) without platform holders certifying games and wanting to promote a good gaming experience on their platform the whole industry would quickly devolve into that sinkhole.

I suppose none of this is radical or revolutionary, but that particular example of the same generation of the same game on different platforms being so different was a really clear illustration.

@Mega-Gazz Good topic.

Way back when snake was a thing on mobile I downloaded quite a few good games the preceeding years and enjoyed a number of them. Games like New star soccer!

When I originally played New star soccer the game cost £1.99 or there abouts and gave me loads of entertainment for what was a playable fun game with a bit of depth. It mustnt have took the development team too long to make as it was pretty basic in all honesty.

Anyway. Last year I downloaded the latest version hoping for the same game to whittle down the hours if im ever waiting somewhere. To cut a long story short within 15 minutes I needed to put in more money to continue, no ifs no buts I needed to pay. The old in game economy of earning money based on your performance in game to the use to buff stats and buy gear was replaced with microtransactions literally killing the game stone dead.

The game required little skill in the big scheme of game development to bring to market and was a fine £2 game. Pocket money for the developers and fun for me. Its now a bag of crap with no redeeming features, a complete scam.

Moving away from mobile and onto console, there needs to be a rule of thumb that full priced games cannot include microtransactions to this scale. Im fed up with the excuse the developers need the money to keep the lights on. Its been a race to the bottom on mobile and I dont want consoles to go the same way, junk is starting to stream the store and I hope we can get some quality control in place before that becomes a flood.

What Im hoping down the line is 3 things;
1) regulation on loot boxes
2) A few big developers to openly say no to loot boxes and showcase that at a big event like E3.
3) Games of chance within games continuing to be called out by the media.

@themcnoisy totally agreed with your list... especially “games of chance”, because the house always wins.

Also, I’d like transparency on the matchmaking algorithms, given the fiasco where I think it was EA using matchmaking to tempt you into buying cool stuff. People have a reasonable expectation that the matchmaking is looking for balanced/fair fights but it totally doesn’t have to, does it?
