Topic: The Radio Thread

Feel free to discuss your favorite radio stations and programs. I would recommend Iggy Pop's 'Iggy Confidential' show on BBC Radio 6 music, but there are others I like as well. What do you like, and why?

I listen to the Huey show on 6music as it's a great mix of rock, hip hop, and everything in between. Craig Charles' funk and soul show is also good fun as I love that sort of track but don't much of that sound.

I've never really liked Iggy's show to be honest as it's a bit hit and miss for me. They really do have some great DJs on that station though.

@Thrillho Ever listen to Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone? Good shout with the Huey show, I think his FLC background has schooled him on a wide range of music.

KEXP 90.3FM from Seattle is in my opinion easily the best station for music. The DJs know their stuff and they have the best playlists (and the occasional live show).

@Draco_V_Ecliptic I've never listened to the Freak Zone, but I do like Radcliffe and Maconie's show. I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the Radio 6 shows, they're all decent

I don't really listen to much radio, but do occasionally listen to Ken Bruce on BBC Radio 2. He's entertaining and there's usually a good mix of music, and his Pop Master quiz is fun even if I struggle to answer any questions correctly.

And I've got my radio alarm clock set to BBC Radio 3 since I find that classical music is a nice gentle way to get woken up to.

I always thought Radio 6 was a boring talkative radio station, but perhaps I'm getting it confused with something else. Since people here seem to like it, I ought to give it a try and see for myself.

I’m sorry I haven’t a clue is my favourite radio program. Its sometimes on BBC radio 4 at 6:30 on a Monday evening.

@crimsontadpoles Ha, 6music definitely not that but it’s so varied depending on the DJ.

@Draco_V_Ecliptic Freak Zone is also pretty leftfield for me. I do prefer their new lineup though; Lauren Laverne and Mary Anne Hobbs are both really good. Sean Keaveny gets a bit annoying. Steve Lamacq is a bit of an institution.

Radcliffe and Maconie are much better in the weekend slot. I quite like Liz Kershaw too on Saturday. The only one I can’t stand is Cerys Matthew’s show.

And some of the guest DJs are really good too. Cilian Murphy is really good and Martin Freeman did some around Christmas that were good.

@Ryall Can’t beat some middle class Radio 4 comedy. RIP Nicholas Parsons.

@Kidfried KEXP is great. The sessions they do on YouTube are fantastic. There are a handful of them that I watch a lot an they are so eclectic too. Like you say, the presenters all seem to know their stuff too.

@Kidfried I am currently tuned in to KEXP, listening to a Terrace Martin session. Well, I don't know if it is a session so much as it is a cut from a live album - either way, it's great. This is more my sort of thing than the stuff on their channel such as The Holy, Andrew Bird and whatnot. As I get the impression that that stuff is geared toward a younger audience. In my early thirties at the moment and I just don't think it's appropriate!

I like BBC Radio 3's Late Junction. It's forward-thinking and experimental, a bit like Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone but with a lot more class and panache. Don't get me wrong though, they're both great shows. What do you guys and girls reckon, if you've listened to it?

@Draco_V_Ecliptic Yes, I gave 6 Music a try. It seemed fine from what I heard.

Arguably I don't listen to the radio enough though. It's just the idea to put the radio on rarely ever pops into my mind. I should get into the habit of having the radio in the background when I'm doing other tasks.

@crimsontadpoles Yeah that's a great idea. 6Music plays a wide variety of artists. There is an entire plethora of music out there to discover. It's great to have on in background while you're doing other stuff because you can kind of say it keeps you company whilst you're doing what you're doing, and you get exposed to styles and musicians you may have previously been unfamiliar with.

@crimsontadpoles The good thing with the BBC Sounds app is you can just listen back to the shows you like. I catch up with the Huey Morgan and Craig Charles 6music shows as they generally play stuff I don't buy but still enjoy.

@Thrillho I only listen to Craig Charles on radio cause he’s the voice of both Robot Wars and Takeshi’s Castle, AKA my childhood. I keep waiting for him to shout ‘Roboteers’ but he never does.

Have any of you ever listened to Late Junction on BBC Radio 3? @crimsontadpoles you should give it a go, I think you would really enjoy it. Friday nights at 11. I hope you check it out sometime or explore it online on the BBC website (It becomes available for streaming by the following morning, I feel) ,so that you can let me know if you enjoy it and we can discuss it.
