@Titntin Despite not many overtakes that was a fairly decent close fought race. Yeah outstanding drive from Lando. When he had the poor restart and lost the lead I thought Kimi would fly away with it but he kept with him and made excellent use of his tyres. Especially after that late VSC when everyone thought Kimi would catch him back up.
Considering Stroll was nowhere with the upgrades, for Alonso to be 9th is highly impressive. No clue just yet what the actual performance of that car is.
Admittedly I didn't follow most of the practice sessions but where did that Alpine pace come from? I don't recall reading any note of anything special out of them.
Despite them running very low wings on straights the bonus of getting a slipstream is looking like making a big difference to times.
Gasly on pole! Way to put two fingers up to the overturned Monaco result. Love to see it.
Bizarre qualifying all around though. Ferrari were nowhere until Q3. Norris messes up turn one. Antonelli weirdly on a different timing to Russell. Odd all around.
Also expect Piastri to get a 3-5 place grid penalty for blocking Lawson. Not entirely his fault but he definitely blocked him and potentially stopped him getting to Q3.
@themightyant After the news this weekend, it must feel especially satisfying.
No idea where the Ferrari pace went, but they are in place for tomorrow.
Mclaren not had a good day.... That last Piastri issue cost them big..
@Titntin if Piastri gets punished the Ferraris will both be second row, 3 & 4, which considering where they were feels like a miracle. Definitely there or there abouts if George doesn’t run away with it. A Ferrari win at Monza still could be on.
@themightyant@Titntin Gasly really likes this track but I didn't think that kind of performance was in that Alpine. It must be well suited to this track.
Yes very odd where Ferrari's pace went, unless everyone else dialed up their cars and Ferrari were already at max. (edit: actually 4th & 5th isn't a massive drop I suppose, just less in the fight than expected).
Lando must have felt a bit annoyed to see Piastri mess up turn one so not give him a tow like he had given him in the first attempt.
@themightyant I'd forgotten that was possible outcome. Either of them could win from there. But I suspect George will be on a mission tomorrow and I wouldn't bet on getting past Gasly either - that Alpine looks so rapid and has the Merc engine too..
Could be a fun race!
I watched Matt & Tommy with breakfast about qualifying and realised I hadn't really noticed Aston's performance. Their engine upgrade clearly didn't give them any significant power improvement to be back behind Cadillac again.
I wonder what was going through George's mind after qualifying. His teammate finally is guaranteed to be way behind him and his chance to claw back some big points and he gets beat to pole by an Alpine.
With the Ferraris right behind him now the start is going to very important.
The effectiveness of the tow gives me hope we get some overtaking 🤞
