That race was a bit mad. Antonelli and Leclerc suffering failures so close together was odd. But Lewis seemed to have command of the race from lights out.
@themightyant I had this discussion with a mate at the time, 5 laps later and there may have been less squeaky-bum-time, turns out LH is quite good at this Formula One lark though. Who knew? And I think he may have finally been able to kick the strotogy out of the scuderia.
@LiamOliver Ha! With the benefit of hindsight my in-real-time thoughts may seem a bit paranoid! That's some of the fun of this.
E.g. When I said "I actually fancied Lewis’ chances more without the VSC." I assumed they were originally going to pit him around 8 laps later and put him on a second set of mediums, although he wouldn't have had track position his lap delta was 1.5s - 2.5s a lap quicker on the medium than the others on the hard's and we saw how easily he breezed round the outside of Piastri.
I just wasn't convinced the Ferrari would be faster on the hard tire and even though he now had track position. I thought the Mercedes would be right on his tail in a few laps as George was less than 3s behind. After all the Mercedes has been so dominant so far this year - they had qualified P1 and won every race so far this season at that point. What I REALLY didn't expect was for Lewis to pull away from them on the same tire at such a rate. It ended up the largest winning margin of any race.
I still can't fully explain it - especially at Barcelona which is usually known for showing true pace. I know their hard tires were a few laps older and tire deg was huge, but it still doesn't quite add up.
Can Ferrari really have closed the gap so much in one set of changes? I'd love to see it, but not convinced after one race... Find out next time on F1. (I'm a bit miffed we need to wait two weeks to find out. lol)
@themightyant Heh, Yeah, we covered that. Both Ferrari's seemed to have a rocket up their arses Sunday. I can live with that (not really a Ferrari or LH fan). Merc and, to a lesser extent McLaren, seem to be lacking in development thus far this season. Mcl were open about it at from the get-go, Merc I was expecting to do better. Dunno what Ferrari have been smoking but I was genuinely happy to see LH get his first win in red, you could feel it boiling up over the past couple of races and I'm glad I made the effort to catch the race in full, it's a shame Leclerc has had such awful luck of late though.
@BearsEatBeets It did stop me from writing anything as I don't watch or really care for tennis. I had commented on every single race in this thread up to that conversation, but the constant tennis blow by blow was a huge turn off. However, as 'its usually you and Ant' my input is clearly not appreciated or noted at all, so you can hijack it with whatever it is you have decided 'your thread' is about I guess.
@Titntin Don't be like that mate. The tennis was a one off, noted for the future.
And for large parts of the last few seasons it was often just me and Bears chewing the fat, I remember we both made a big deal when you came back as it was basically just us two for long stretches - it's better with more.
@Titntin If that's how my comment came across I apologise because that wasn't my intent. I in no way consider it my thread and if our enthusiasm for another sport happening at the same time put you off commenting I'll avoid it in future.
Just because @themightyant and me hog the thread at times doesn't mean I don't appreciate when yourself and others contribute as well. The more voices the better.
@themightyant Probably McLaren/Lando. Although I have an appreciation for Max and, provided he doesn't burn out, I reckon Antonelli is gonna shine brightest this year. His neck starting to go Sunday suggests his strength/fitness needs some work, but that's as much to do with inexperience as anything, even with early cancellations it's gonna be a physically tough and mentally strenuous season for the entire grid.
The tennis thing was interesting to me, I couldn't sit and watch it but it's a space I'm aware of and was rooting for Raducanu. Who'd'a thunk I'd have got my updates from a F1 thread in a PlayStation space! 😱
@LiamOliver I like Lando as well and I was glad he managed to get the Championship last year. To be fair there are quite a few drivers I like and I'm happy to see do well. I have a soft spot for the Williams team and both drivers so I'm eager for them to turn things around asap.
It seems the Monaco penalties situation is still ongoing.
@BearsEatBeets Oh boy.. That saga could run and run like Massa and 'his' championship.
I've always had a soft spot for Williams, it was heartbreaking to see Clair struggle but they seem to be finally moving away from the 'Men in shed's' mentality. I like their drivers too, Albon seems like a decent guy, as does Sainz. And both of them are top tier drivers, Sainz has shown it and up against Albon I reckon he's only a sniff better
There's only a couple of drivers I dislike, never liked Russell and cannot stand Rosberg they both give me 'Jimmy Saville' vibes. Not a fan of the rest of the sky team either, well, half of them. Crofty and Ted are embarrassments.
@LiamOliver I always thought Claire seemed like decent and likeable person but it was a terrible time for the team.
There is something very media-trained/professional about George, I find him a bit devoid of personality.
Totally agree about Crofty and Ted, the former has become even worse recently. It's a shame Sky have the broadcast rights but at least Martin Brundle, Jenson, Karun and especially Bernie make it watchable (for me at least).

It’s true that most of those speeding penalties never should have happened, they were falsely recorded and the drivers who were penalised were done so unfairly. Part of me agrees it is right to overturn those where you can. I.e. those who had time added on at the end.
But it’s also true that those who served their penalties during the race massively lost out and can’t appeal. By fixing one but not the other you are penalising some drivers but not others.
I’m not sure which is worse. On the one hand if you reinstate Gasly in 3rd it’s fairer on him, but also less fair on others. Major cock-up.
Ultimately it’s impossible to fix for everyone, I hope they make a decision quickly, I don’t actually feel strongly one way or the other. But more than anything i hope robust measures are put in place to try to prevent this happening ever again!

@themightyant I think Piastri has summed it up well. Ultimately a mistake was made in measurement but that measurement was applied equally to every driver. By revoking Gasly's penalty they are now creating an uneven system that punishes everyone but him.
For me all they should have done was admit the error and assure it won't happen again but leave the result as was.
@BearsEatBeets it's not evenly applied to everyone as it stands. Russell probably would have finished third, had 15 points more and be 2nd in Championship if they hadn't incorrectly said he was speeding which is what led to the second penalty. I can see how this is seen as singling out one driver and that could be worse. We have to move on as it can't be fixed whatever they do.
As I said above I just hope they fix it so it can't happen again.
@themightyant It's all just levels of mess at this point. I just think they dug even deeper trying a fix a tiny part of it.
The main surprise for me was learning they use an average speed system. I suppose I really never gave it much thought but assumed it was more like a sensor on the speedometer if it went over the limit whilst in the designated area.
Anyway, a bit of a break before two of the best tracks back to back, Red Bull Ring and Silverstone.
@BearsEatBeets Yes, also surprised by that and wondering why it hasn't been an issue in the past. As Lewis said, and a couple of video's showed, he approached the pits the same line as usual, cutting the corner (which is reportedly allowed as it's too tight for a modern F1 car - didn't someone bin it here a few years back). So why was it flagging this time and not others?
I initially suspected they must have made a mistake in measuring the track length to do the speed check and measured within the lines, when no one takes the corner that way. Or perhaps it was as simple as a data entry error!
However THIS video seemed to have the answer... and we can blame Cadillac (sorta) lol
Just had it flash up on my phone, the FIA have deemed this weekends Austrian GP a 'heat hazard' race, which is of no great surprise, but I just checked the forecast for Silverstone and, according to both apps I use, it's going to rain! Bloody typical!
