@nessisonett That's pretty much how I played most of my PSone and PS2 games whenever possible, by using cheats to skip around and play the levels out of order!

Isn't there a cheat to play as a flying car in the Rogue Squadron games?

@RogerRoger That's the "Infernal Machine" game isn't it? It's not bad at all - it's pretty much as you would expect - clunky "Tomb Raider" knock off but with some surprisingly excellent puzzle design. There's a SNES "Indy" game, too - that one is essentially a reskin of "Super Star Wars" but with all three (then extant) movies condensed onto one cart. I've never seen a hard copy in person so I imagine it must be quite rare.

RogerRoger

@LN78 Yeah, that's the one. Thanks for the reassurance that it's worth a shot, especially with the comparison to classic Tomb Raider, of which I'm a big fan.

Further thanks for bringing Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures to my attention, as I didn't even realise that game existed before today! I've found a commentary-free playthrough on YouTube and will watch it in short order. I have no way of playing SNES games for myself, but this looks so utterly charming, so I really wanna see how it presents the entire trilogy!

I take it you've still got working SNES console then, if you're looking out for cartridges? Is that how you played through the Super Star Wars games lately, on the original hardware?

I do indeed have a working SNES and an unbelievably heavy (as in that thing ain't moving, ever) Sony Trinitron CRT to play it on. I recently found out that "Indiana Jones and The Staff of Kings" on the Nintendo Wii has an unlockable fully playable and complete version of "The Fate of Atlantis" hidden on it so I'm going to be on the look out for a copy of that in the near future - even if the main game itself is apparently borderline unplayable. On a tangential note the semi-obscure James Bond game (imaginatively entitled "James Bond 007") that came out on the OG Gameboy in the late 90's is an absolute treat. It's essentially a Zelda clone but it's extremely tongue in cheek and stuffed with Easter Eggs for fans. I think you'll really enjoy it.

@LN78 Nice! Sometimes I wish I'd kept a small CRT for my PS2. As good as a component cable can make the picture on modern TVs, it's still not quite as good as it should be.

Staff of Kings is an interesting historical curiosity for Indy gamers, if nothing else, considering what famously happened to its PS360 version. It provides a truckload of insight into what might've been, which is either fascinating or painful, depending on your point of view. The PS2 version is free of any motion control nonsense, which makes it infinitely more playable, but it's also missing that unlockable Fate of Atlantis port. You can get Fate of Atlantis on GOG.com for pennies, though.

When it comes to Indiana Jones games, I reckon The Emperor's Tomb is still my top pick. I always thought that LucasArts and The Collective worked well together, although I'm probably more than a little biased on that point, given how important Revenge of the Sith was to me back in 2005.

Thanks for the Bond recommendation! I've seen snippets before, but never watched a whole playthrough and alas, our family GameBoy went the way of the dodo a while back, so playing it for myself is out of the question, as well. That being said, the rumours about a GoldenEye 007 remaster give me hope that some other classic Bond games could make a comeback soon, so you never know!

@LN78 I’d kill for a Trinitron. Wish my uncle had kept his massive CRT we used to play Melee on. Unfortunately the retro community’s gotten too large and they go for silly prices now!

@RogerRoger I've got "The Emporer's Tomb" for OG Xbox and thanks to the Microsoft's enhanced backwards compatibility program it runs superbly well on the Series X - the Harrison Ford-alike is still a bit dodgy though! @nessisonett Keep your eye out on Gumtree and such like. These things are so unwieldy and access to forklift trucks is so limited that people are often willing to part with them for pennies just to have somebody come and take them away. I bought mine for £50 about 18 months ago so you might get lucky. Failing that the KAICO (or similar) HDMI converters are a pretty good alternative - my main TV doesn't have accessible SCART or component ports at all so I have to use one if I want to play "Chibi Robo" or something in the living room.

@LN78 I don't mind admitting how jealous I am of Xbox owners and their ability to access what are essentially free remasters of sixth and seventh generation classics!

Harrison Ford soundalikes always sound dodgy to me. His is a very difficult voice to get right. Despite my wider issues with LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it should always be applauded for getting him behind a microphone for the game's new dialogue.

Quality of voice acting is what I'm most nervous about in The Skywalker Saga, if I'm honest.

@RogerRoger I noticed a rubbish Harrison sound alike during the brilliant Batman/Star Wars gag in "The LEGO Movie" a while back. Pretty sure it was actually Billy Dee Williams and Anthony Daniels though.

LN78

RogerRoger

@LN78 Yeah, I think that was the same soundalike they hired for the EA Battlefront games. I actually prefer it when encountering players using a skin from Solo, because at least the voice (whether it's Alden Ehrenreich or not) works a whole lot better.

Billy Dee Williams is a treasure. I'm replaying Jedi Outcast and he's just shown up. Always love hearing his voice, no matter how briefly. Anthony Daniels is another one who's difficult to fake.

@RogerRoger Bethesda are certainly going to need a convincing stand-in for their upcoming "Indy" game - assuming of course they don't get the real McCoy. I'm really looking forward to that one. I'm also strangely optimistic about the new film - I think that's largely down to James Mangold's involvement. He tends to make quality flicks and Spielberg's lack of interest was palpable during the production of "Crystal Skull" so I doubt he would've brought much enthusiasm to the fifth installment..

I've been watching Bona Fett finally. Got one episode left which I'll watch tonight.

Love the theme tune!

See ya!

RogerRoger

@LN78 I'm always excited for more Indy, but there's also a part of me that's suppressing any potential hype until a trailer drops, at least. Not sure why. Might have something to do with the very real possibility that Bethesda's game will be exclusive to Xbox, at which point I'm screwed.

@ralphdibny Really hope you enjoy the finale and yes, revel in that theme one last time! I listened to it on a loop for almost half an hour a while back. I love how The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett have continued to evolve Star Wars music, in much the same way The Clone Wars did. It sounds so right, yet feels so different. It's an amazing balancing act.

Oh, and it's been one heck of an epic typo week around here!

@RogerRoger haha omg, I meant boba fett, not even sure how bona happened lol. It's not an auto correct but the n is next to the b on the keyboard haha. I'll leave it up there because it's quite funny 😅

I think I prefer the Mandalorian as a show to Boba Fett, but with what's happened in episode 5&6, this show really has ended up being Mando Season 2.5 and is essential viewing if somebody was going to watch Mandalorian Season 3 after watching the first 2 seasons.

Not sure which theme tune I prefer out of Mandalorian and Boba Fett. I would have said Mando's but I have been whistling Boba Fett on and off for the last few days!

See ya!

RogerRoger

@ralphdibny That's what his name should be in Season Two.

Yeah, I think Disney's marketing department has a lot to answer for, and arguably should never have tried to pitch the show as its own separate thing. Trailers and posters should've contained some clues, even if it ended up spoiling some surprises. Heck, I might've even called it Star Wars: The Mandalorian - The Book of Boba Fett or something, just to avoid any potential confusion, because there are gonna be folks who come back for Mando Season Three without realising that they've got homework to do first.

This really is a glimpse of the future. The age of separate shows is ending. Interconnected universes are here to stay, and are spreading across all mediums. It's really starting to feel like, at this point, you either do Star Wars or you don't. It's all or nothing.

Looking forward to reading your concluding thoughts!

And brace yourself, because that theme's gonna take up semi-permanent residence in your head.

@RogerRoger You've got a chunky PC - even if the new "Indy" game is a Microsoft exclusive (which I doubt) you'll still be able to play it. Took your advice and ordered the PS2 version of "Staff of Kings" as well.

LN78

ralphdibny

@RogerRoger I feel like Obi Wan might end up being fairly standalone. I know all the live action shows sort of reference what come before but Boba Fett and Mando are much more closely tied. I was under the impression that those two shows, the probably now defunct Rangers show and Ahsoka were all going to be linked into a single overarching story.

The last episode was brill by the way. When Grogu arrived on Tatooine, I had this sudden realisation that they might kill off the Mandalorian and do one of those "gave something up forever for a lost cause" moments on Grogu. Glad they didn't though!

I also realised that the song had the lyrics "Fett, Boba Boba Boba Boba" etc. I had to look it up because I thought I was stupid for not realising it earlier but it turns out they just changed it for the last episode 😅

See ya!

RogerRoger

@LN78 That's a good point. I do prefer console gaming, to the point where I often forget my PC is an option, so I'll still keep fingers crossed for a PS5 version, but cheers. I hope you find Staff of Kings worthwhile, and apologies in advance if I've steered you wrong!

***

@ralphdibny Yeah, that seems to be what they're going for, connecting things that take place in the same time periods as each other, but not going for broad sweeps. That being said, given what we've seen in the Obi-Wan trailer already, there's plenty of shared DNA and the possibility of some major connections between it and things like Ahsoka. I guess time will tell. I feel like they've announced some stuff way too early, pandemic production delays or not, but things do seem to be ramping up.

Really glad you enjoyed Boba Fett as much as you did and yeah, it took me a second to realise what they were doing with that final blast of the theme, too! According to rumour, it was supposed to have those lyrics all along, but they tweaked it at the last minute. Made it even more of an earworm, though!

@RogerRoger In regards to "The Staff of Kings"
I think you'll agree that having a playable rubbish game is preferable to having an unplayable rubbish game, if only marginally. Does the Vita port of "Super Star Wars" have modern tweaks like rewind and save states? I found a 99 lives cheat in the SNES game and I was still hard pushed to finish the bloody thing!

LN78

RogerRoger

@LN78 Oh, completely agree, yes! And as much as I respect what the Wii did, there's a time and a place for motion controls, and something that's trying to be a playable Indiana Jones movie isn't it.

I don't recall Super Star Wars having a rewind feature on PS Vita. It did have a modern save system, though, as well as multiple graphical filters (stuff like "smooth" and "CRT" and whatnot) and alternate border artwork, as it preserves the original 4:3 aspect ratio. I think all the old cheats work, as well, but I didn't use 'em because they disable trophies. Whatever they tweaked, even if it was just the save system, must've worked, because I was able to finish the game, and I'm often allergic to challenge!
