At this moment, it feels like manufactured droughts of information to make people excited about the tiniest of crumbs. I’m not a fan. If it becomes the norm though, we’ll get used to it.
@nessisonett I think you may have hit the nail on the head. I do think the current pandemic has impacted things, getting game demos ready for instance is actually far harder to do when social distancing. However, Sony knew enough in June to double production of the PS5, so they knew costs, and thus likely launch prices then. This is about controlling / manufacturing hype. Not a huge fan of it myself, but I'm too old any way so I'm probably just grumpy.
I don't enjoy the trickling of information before the announcements, like when a game is announced and then nothing is announced for a year. However, I do like it when the game is finally given more info all at once because it usually means the game will be releasing soon.
I'm a bit torn on this issue. Part of me is only human, and is therefore a sucker for a well-edited trailer. It's also nice to know that I've got things to look forward to beyond the immediate.
But this increasing demand to be shown anything and everything is annoying me, if I'm honest. I get that this year has thrown a bucket full of spanners into many a well-oiled marketing machine, but I think that all this forced silence has made me realise that... well, that I quite like silence. I praised trailers above, and always will, but I've also always been allergic to those who'll do hour-long gameplay walkthroughs of their games weeks or even months before they're launched. I think it's the people who like those walkthroughs (and the businesses that exist to pass judgement on them) who are driving a lot of the recent frustration over "last minute" announcements. We'll know stuff when we know it; what's the actual hurry?
It takes three minutes to watch a trailer. Even less time to read an article's summary of it. Any extra time between that moment and launch is just padding, as far as I'm concerned... but then I am concerned, because I'm a gamer and a follower of this website, so I guess you've got to leave enough time for announcements to spread to a wider audience. I'd say a month should do.
"We want different things, Crosshair. That doesn't mean that we have to be enemies."
Fingers crossed we at least get E3 and other gaming events next year as these online events don't have the same impact. Also it's nice hearing peoples opinion form playing the games on the show floor and passing the feedback to developers in case improvements are needed.
@Thrillho I don't usually watch any of the conferences as I find them a right bore to watch, but the last PS5 showcase was alright as it was mostly games games games. And then they showed the PS5 off. It was a unique experience watching it with my mates over whatsapp/ps messages.
Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
Interesting topic and a hard one really to completely work out what is happening.
I think, overall, I prefer announcements to be closer to launch. With the various console launches, I think that the timings have been fine with possibly the exception of cost to be honest which I could do with for planning purposes. As in.. how poor will I be?
I dislike games being announced years before they release because I get bored by them and the release can't meet the long drawn out hype machine. I really want to play Bayonetta 3 but to be honest I would have loved it more if it was announced when there was a good attainable launch window.
I like a few months notice personally - enough time for me to get excited but also close enough for me to know it is a real thing and coming in.
Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot
Well it seems the rumour of Sweden getting at most a couple hundred is true. The shop I'd registered interest at months ago had me sixth on their list. Their initial stock won't cover me. This is in Malmö a fairly major city here in Sweden with a few fairly well known developers like Massive and Tarsier to name two... and I guess King if you're into mobile games. And the prices? Jesus. SE is 5990 SEK (£530, $685 and €577) and 4990 SEK (£440, $570, €480). They are taking the urine here. It's not tax either. VAT is pretty much European average and the goods tax is actually lower than most European nations. Sony are joking. With rumours the XSX will be under cutting the PS5 SE by 890 SEK here, it's going to be competing with the DE. Screw the PS5 I'm out.
@I_Like_It faith is for believers, and I am most definitely atheist. lol. I managed to perform the greater miracle of acquiring an RTX 3080, so I'll have something to do with myself over Christmas while contemplating my own mortality and the futility of existence... while munching on imported Terry's Chocolate Oranges.
