Hello all.

Just got my PS5. Popped Demon's Souls in and it sounded like a tiny bandsaw had started up in the console! Can anyone else confirm that the blue ray drive on the PS5 is a bit loud and sounds loose?

Yes it loud, spinning moving parts = noise. Mine for a bit was randomly spinning up the disk as well, even when not running the game.

Glad it's not just me. It seems quieter when installing Valhalla. Enjoy anyway, guys!

Can confirm it's a little loud. It doesn't seem worse than the PS4 Pro though. It's probably amplified a bit more because the system itself seems so quite.
What's more annoying me though is the drive spinning up every hour or so for no apparent reason even when there's no game running.

It made just as much noise as you would expect when installing a large amount of data from a disk. At least initially, after it had finished installing I couldn't hear a thing, apart from the odd whirr now and again. Which is normal.

Nah, man. This drive is way louder than my ps4 slim drive.

@PossibLeigh You may have a defected console then. Time to contact Sony.

Nah, not yet. It works just fine and there are no replacements available. It's only the drive, so it's not on all the time anyway. If it gets worse then I'll get it sorted under the warranty when there is stock available. As it happens, it has actually seemed to get better! It's more ps4 drive level now. Weird.

@PossibLeigh Glad it seems to have sorted itself out!

My PS5 certainly isn't quiet Disc drive gets pretty loud, and regularly, the rest of the time I can definitely hear the fan or coil or whatever might be making the noise and I'm sitting maybe 3 metres away.

TheIdleCritic

@PossibLeigh Haha, yes. I went to Sainos for a big shop since last night but I've been on it pretty much the entire time I've been home.

The thing is, in regards to the disc drive noise - I've installed Tsushima and during installation and copying it was roaring. Okay, I can forgive that. But 100% of the time spent playing it it's been loud, and even when the game is closed/shut down it's loud for some reason.

And the fan - it's silent when it starts up. No problem. I haven't timed it (I will next time) but after a while, let's say 20 minutes for now, it'll kick into action and remain audible. I'm listening to it right now as I type. And as I said before - I don't have to be anywhere near it to hear. Far away it just sounds like a fan, the closer you get there's an audible vibration type noise.

It's far from silent. It's akin to the hum of a fridge. I understand things like this have to make noise. It's a byproduct, but when the PS5 is touted to stay cool (which is actually is after even hours of play) and quiet (which is most definitely isn't) then I dare say... maybe something is wrong with mine.

BraveLilCrumpet

@TheIdleCritic I've got this too, I think it's just the nature of the machine. I don't think anything is wrong with your PS5.

When the console comes on it's quiet but far from silent. You know it's on. While playing games the fan ramps up and is audible in quiet sections of the game and in dialogue.
To be fair, it's nowhere near as loud as the PS4 was but not as quiet or silent as everyone was making it out to be. The machine does certainly generate noise.
I'm about 6ft away or so from mine and it's out on top of a unit next to the TV so I may be closer than others to their console when turned on. I'm also in a pretty rural area, so the room it's in is very quiet too.
I would say your assessment of comparing it to the hum of a fridge is spot on.

I've asked a friend regarding their noise and they've said they can't hear it but again they've not really been listening out for it and their TV has been loud too.

Edit
I'd also like to add that noise is subjective and what might be loud to you is quiet for others. To put it into perspective the PS5 is quieter under load than my water-cooled PC is while not doing anything in 'quiet' mode.
I also feel it's not exactly the level of noise being generated, but the actual sound it's making. I will most likely drown it out in time once I'm used to it or it'll just settle down after a while.

Subjectivity or not, anyone who is posting that their Ps5 is completely silent is simply not being honest or blinded by an allegiance to a brand. Now don't get me wrong, aside from that the Ps5 is very quiet, honestly the only other instances of noise are the instances of what the community has dubbed coil whine. I notice it particularly when a game is running but paused or sitting in an idle menu screen. I have genuinely not once heard any fan noise whatsoever, however I have only been playing Valhalla and Demon Souls

My disc drive noise is loud. period. It's in fact the loudest disc drive I have ever hear in any console or on any PC ever. It isn't always running but for the few seconds it does kick in it absolutely does sound like a small band-saw or someone palm sanding my TV stand.

The disc drive is loud at certain points but that only seems to last perhaps 10 maybe 15 seconds at most. Its usually when the console is first turned on with a disc in it or when you boot up said disc based game. Other than that during a game I can't say I've actually noticed it. May well do if playing something quieter than Miles Morales.

@BraveLilCrumpet The problem of course is that there's no way for me to compare. No one I know has a PS5.

The disc drive noise is fine. It jumps into action when you first stick in the disc, then it's quiet. The fan noise is fine. It's something that alters the flow of air, so of course there's a noise. It's the fact that there's also that humming. As you brought up again... the fridge. It's started pulsating too. When I put my ear up to it I can hear the fan, which is normal, but there's also the aforementioned vibrating hum (now pulsating). Ruling out the drive and the fan I'm really at a loss as to what the might be.

BraveLilCrumpet

@TheIdleCritic You know me with one dude. How about a little later I record the noise coming from mine and we can compare?

It may also be the coil whine people are mentioning. Not to sound dismissive of your the problem you're experiencing but it's still early days for the console and there is time for all these noises to settle down.

@HMazzy111 It does make me wonder why this wasn't mentioned in any reviews. As I say, mine seems to have calmed down now. It's a minor thing, but annoying nonetheless.

PossibLeigh

TheIdleCritic

@BraveLilCrumpet That would be great

Yes, that's true. And I have to be mindful of that. Could be perfectly normal and in fact it's impossible that it can actually be silent lol.

Total_Weirdo

My PS5 console fan is dead silent i can only hear it if i put my ear close to the console so i am really pleased with that.

Regards the disc drive i installed Spiderman Miles and it was very silent compared to my PS4 Pro with only a slight humming noise while installing the disc. Again very please with disc drive noise level.

Feel free to add me on Switch.
