I used the Seagate ext HDD game drive! If you have PS Plus, you can also use the cloud to backup game saves etc.

I bought a SeaGate 2TB External HDD because I want to backup my data from my PS4 incase anything happens to my console. so I formatted the drive to external use then nothing would copy or transffer to my external HDD so I formatted it to exFAT and went to backup mt data and while it took about 40 minutes to download I got an error saying it couldn't backup (CE-30005-8) how do I fix this?

I'd suggest connecting to a PC and running a disk check.

@KALofKRYPTON How to I format my external HDD so I can backup my ps4 data? is there a certain USB port on the console I could use and do I put it in exFAT?

To back up data you need a FAT32 or exFAT-formatted external storage device with at least double the storage space the PS4™ hard drive has. If you don't have enough space to back up everything on your device, you can choose not to back up application data.
It’s important to sync your Trophies first because they are not included in the backup data. Go to [Trophies], press the OPTIONS button, and select the [Sync Trophies With PSN].
Insert the external storage device you'd like to use for the backup into one of the PS4™ USB ports.
Go to [Settings] > [System] > [Back Up and Restore].
Select [Back Up].
Confirm which data you'd like to back up.
If you choose not to back up [Application Data], you'll need to download or reinstall them when you restore the data on the system with the backup you're creating.
It is important to back up saved data to avoid losing any game progress during the hard drive replacement.
A progress bar will show the current status of the backup. You can cancel it any time.
On the next screen, you can customize the name of the backup. When done, highlight [Back Up] and press the X button.
Remove the external storage device from the PS4™ system.

Praise the Sun, and Mario too.

@docbrown2015 ExFAT or FAT32 should work, also so should any of the USB ports.

It looks like the process you followed is fine, [Settings>Back Up and Restore>Back up PS4] - that's why I suggested running a disk check via a PC to make sure there are no issues with the drive itself.

Thank you guys. after I let the backup run for about 35 minutes and finish I get an error saying that the back uo ans I got the error code (CE-30005-8) should I rebuild my database? will that delete my things?

do not pre-format the hdd as FAT32 using a PC, as FAT32 will not work! there is a filesize limitation with FAT32, so that you may not be able to write certain games files on to it. you should re-format the drive using the PS4. the CE-30005-8 error is usually caused by one of the 3 bits of hardware, the blu-ray drive (which you can rule out in this case), the internal hdd, or the external hdd, and means it could not read (or write) to one of the devices. rebuilding the PS4 database using option 5 of the safe menu will NOT delete anything - some PS4 firmware updates force a database rebuild anyway, so it's fairly safe to do.

Thank you! also I forgot to mention. I have a game disc in the drive at the time I was trying to back my data, could this be the cause of the error message?
