Since we're now ten days away, I reckon an official topic is due.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is an upcoming single-player, microtransaction-free action / adventure game from developers Respawn Entertainment and published by EA. It follows the story of Cal Kestis, a former Jedi Padawan who survived the treachery of Order 66 and is now living in a galaxy taught to fear and expose his kind. Teaming up with another former Jedi, as well as encountering budding rebels taking early pot-shots at the new Galactic Empire, Cal attempts to restore his Order whilst being pursued by the Inquisitorius, an elite band of Dark Side users trained to hunt and kill Jedi on behalf of their Emperor.

After a fan-pleasing-yet-gameplay-simple showing at E3, Respawn recently held an extensive preview event which cast the game in a much better light. Combat appears to take inspiration from Dark Souls, whilst exploration and traversal shares similarities with Uncharted and the modern Tomb Raider games. There are also Metroidvania elements to each planet's level design, with players able to take off and land as they please after unlocking key skills and Force powers needed to progress.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will be released Friday, November 15 for PC, PlayStation4 and XboxONE.

@WanderingBullet Forgive me, I was gonna do this anyway and when I saw you posting in the Chit Chat Thread, I thought I might as well.

That video preview you linked was all B-Roll footage taken from the recent preview event; everybody's been using the same clips. It only showcases one planet, and uses a nearly-finished-but-not-quite build of the game. Of course, games are never released in a finished state nowadays, so any Day One patch might not fix all issues, but I'm sure some of the traversal animations will be smoothed out (at least, I hope they will be).

In some of the previous videos, we've seen larger (not by much, mind) enemy groups, particularly where Cal wanders into groups of Stormtroopers fighting wildlife, at which point it looks as though you can pick a side or just attack everything. I'm sure later planets will provide more of a challenge.

But you're right, the focus would appear to be on lightsaber duelling, not lightsaber combat.

@RogerRoger i'm still on the edge, after the way EA has treated the franchise AND coupled with the fact after the last update BF2 nearly killed my PS4 i'm still dubious about it

i could get it on my XB1 though

RogerRoger

@FullbringIchigo It's being heavily promoted via Microsoft and XboxONE (guess they won the coin toss this time around) so it'll definitely run in a comparable state to PS4, if not slightly better.

@WanderingBullet You're welcome; apologies if I seemed a little defensive of your (good and valid) points. This is literally the only major AAA game that I've have any interest in for the entire year, so I'm getting a little obsessive / anxious about it!

@RogerRoger No worries, man. I have a slight interest in it too but I'm going to wait for reviews first.

Huntin' monsters erryday.

Th3solution

I was probably going to get either this or Death Stranding this month, or possibly neither depending on reviews. Death Stranding is pretty strong right out of the gate with the 10/10 here. 🤞🏼 Here’s hoping this reviews well and it makes the decision even more difficult about which game gets my hard earned cash and extremely valuable time.

RogerRoger

@WanderingBullet Wise move in this day and age, no matter the game.

@Th3solution Yeah, because it's Star Wars and therefore has to have a degree of "accessible for all, play it safe" in it, I'm guessing a lot of the reviews will be 7s or 8s regardless of overall quality. There won't be anything as daring as Death Stranding. I guess your choice will be between something solidly decent yet semi-predictable, and something a little more risky and uneven, but potentially genius.

If you (or anybody else) has any questions about it, I'll be around and playing it the week after launch, so feel free to tag me and I'll keep it spoiler-free.

ApostateMage

The thing that sold me most on this is the buddy buddy relationship between Cal and BD-1. It sounds mad but I love a bit of charm in my games.

In the absence of Doom Eternal my attention has turned to either this or Death Stranding at launch, I do like the look of this and I'm getting excited for the release of the next movie. Also Respawn have a great track record and the more gameplay I'm seeing of this the better its looking and it seems as though they are leaning on DICE's excellent sound designs and effects.

Older than I care to remember but have been gaming since owning a wooden Atari 2600 and played pretty much everything inbetween.

With Death Stranding coming out this week, and Pokemon next week, this game will have to wait. And to be fair, it will probably be cheaper a few weeks/months from now.

RogerRoger

@ApostateMage Same; I'm really looking forward to BD-1. After so many games of this type have gone the dark and sombre route, I don't think it's mad to want something different, something more upbeat and cute. He looks like a little robot puppy!

@carlos82 Headset all the way, absolutely. It's gonna sound gorgeous, no matter what.

@Octane There's quite a bit of crossover between the Pokémon and Star Wars fanbases, from what I gather. I'm real glad I never got the Pokémon bug because, with both games releasing on the same day, I'd give myself a headache picking which to play first. Haven't been in a situation like that since 2011, mercifully. Here's hoping you enjoy catching 'em all.

Yeah, both have learned to cope with disappointment after disappointment

Fallen Order looks alright to me, but it also looks a lot like Titanfall 2 set in a Star Wars universe. Some of the more recent trailer show more diverse gameplay, so I'm looking forward to it more than I did a few months ago, but at that point I already decided on getting DS and Pokemon. I think those two complement each other well, with the Switch being handheld and all. Maybe during the holidays, but I have to finish Control first as well!

Octane

RogerRoger

@Octane True!

I think Death Stranding and Pokémon will make the perfect double act. One is this weird, mature unknown and the other is a refinement of a cute, comfortable familiarity. You'll be able to strike a nice balance depending on your day-to-day mood. Good plan!

For similar reasons, I've been desperately avoiding Star Wars games, or third-person action adventures in general, for a couple weeks. I don't want any kind of burnout dragging me down.

I admit I haven't fully paid any attention to any of the info, trailers & articles surrounding this and when I heard Dark Souls comparisons being thrown around I assumed it was the now rote, and dare I say sterotypical, mention cus the games are challenging... I mean

Untitled

It's become a parody.

... So colour me surprised upon reading the reviews that this does actually have a lot of souls influences/mechanics like bonfires, estus, enemies respawning and the likes

I think you aren't a (Dark) Souls fan @RogerRoger and well... are you now a believer?

@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy I've never tried playing a Dark Souls game before, although not because of the gameplay. I just don't like gothic horror or fantasy stuff so much. Having now played two and a half hours of Jedi: Fallen Order, however, I'm not sure I could ever call it my favourite style of gameplay... although that could be my fault, for running at a giant space frog like a madman, thinking I was still playing The Force Unleashed. Once I remember to be more tactical, more deliberate, I'm sure I'll have a blast.

So yeah, hot take on Jedi: Fallen Order incoming (and tagging @Th3solution as promised).

First impressions are strong. I had to restart the game after ten minutes, however, because its HDR implementation is genuinely atrocious. Everything looked washed out, vague and bland, jarringly so. Once I'd quit, deactivated my PS4's HDR settings, and turned off the in-game motion blur, it started to look like the trailers. I haven't turned on Performance Mode (which locks down 1080p to ensure 30fps) because I haven't felt the need to; the game runs smooth enough, with only a brief couple of framerate splutters whilst wandering around in large environments. Nothing impacting combat yet, thankfully. Despite a few incredibly brief, barely noticeable rough edges to some minor animations and transitions, common to many third-party, multi-platform games, everything is very, very nice to look at.

There is no Photo Mode yet, however (as mentioned to @Rick_Deckard in another comment section just now). That'll obviously be forthcoming in a future patch. As a result, I only managed to capture one candid moment with Cal, although I'm actually kinda pleased not to have the tempting distraction during my first run, as the story already has me hooked.

You're eased into the Dark Souls combat mechanics (and wide, open exploration) moreso than the Uncharted platforming elements, which help make up the game's exciting half-hour prologue. If you're not a Star Wars fan (and in particular, a fan of both The Clone Wars and Rebels animated shows) then it might take you a moment to get a handle on who everybody is, and what their motivations are, but they otherwise slot right in with the pre-existing narrative of "the Dark Times" with an effortless, shorthand grace. Facial animations are stunning, some of the best I've seen in a non-exclusive game, and I'm already emotionally invested in Cal, Cere and BD-1 (who is wretchedly adorable; move over BB-8, there's a new droid in town).

In fact, the pacing has been quite pleasant. What starts as Uncharted in space slowly drip-feeds you skill trees, upgradeable gear, map mechanics and databank entries during your second and third hours, which are spent on a new planet you have no choice but to visit. I've just finished up the story there (with the map telling me that I've missed a bunch of extra stuff, currently blocked away from my newbie status) and have a choice of two planets to visit next, one brand new to the game and the other from established Star Wars canon.

My only (personal) issue is that the combat does fly in the face of Star Wars and casual gaming convention, so I'm going to have to work hard to learn it, even playing on one of the easiest difficulty settings. It reminds me of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance with its perfectly-timed parry mechanic, but I've been so focused on getting it right that I've totally forgotten to use any Force powers in a fight (although Cal only starts with one). I'll get there, I'm sure, but it's a shock to the system, especially for those of us who almost exclusively play middle-of-the-road, safe and established franchises.

If it weren't a Star Wars game, I'd be calling it "pretty good, with tons of potential to be great" but the authentic use of the licence, and therefore the immersion it provides, is making me wanna bump things up to "great, with tons of potential to be absolutely amazing".

When I woke up, I was surprised to see eights and nines being thrown around in many reviews. Having gotten underway, I'm less surprised now. From the looks of things, Respawn done good.

I maybe in denial or too cynical, but i refuse too see how this plays like a Dark Souls game until I hear from someone i know that has played a Dark Souls game, plays this. I've been caught out too many times before with stuff like this.
