Topic: Do you have any personal ambitions in the gaming world?

I've been a gamer for as long as I can remember but it's only recently that I've started to realise that gaming is probably my biggest passion in life. I've started pondering what I'd love to be able to do in the industry, perhaps even somehow turning it into a full time job. Unfortunately, my ambitions are likely well out of reach but I thought it'd be interesting to share with you guys anyway.

A few of my dreams/goals would be:

  • To fund development of games. I'm not sure I'm creative (and definitely not talented) enough to actually design a game myself, but I'd love to be able to help someone that was. This is a "what you'd do if you won the lottery" type dream but if I could afford it, I'd definitely put money into the development of game ideas that appealed to me - whether it be a classic DKC like 2D platformer or perhaps The Getaway 3, I'd love to some how be a part of a project like that.
  • To set up a gaming museum/library. I have a reasonably large games collection myself anyway but I reckon it'd be awesome to be able to set up a whole building dedicated to gaming history. With an enormous collection of games, consoles, memorabilia, magazines, books, and tons more. Like a museum, each room could be set up dedicated to a particular console or even franchise.

Do you have any gaming dreams yourself? Perhaps you'd like to write a book about your favourite series? Design a game yourself? Let me know in this thread as I'd love to hear them.

I've thought about opening a gaming pub for 10-12 years now. I've seen a few pop up in the UK in recent years. Maybe I'll do it one day!

@kyleforrester87 that's a good one. I helped run a pub a couple of years ago and nearly took it on full time by myself, floating around the idea of setting it up for gaming but I think it would've been too big a change for the kind of pub it is and probably wouldn't have worked. Funny you mention that though as that'd still be one of my goals as well kind of similar to the museum/library idea.

Getting the best game of all time poll in the forums to over 1000 comments!

On a serious note Ive attempted programming but dont have the aptitude to learn enough to enact what I want to happen on screen. Ive turned to making music but due to work commitments and family I dont have the time. Maybe in a few years I will take it more seriously.

Otherwise maybe I can team up with Wigslitter himself. Ive got access to a nightclub to run promotions crazily enough but it probably wouldnt be suitable. We could name the pub wigsplitters and obviously have a quiet gaming half and a Noisy gaming half!

Haha they'll only really work in the big cities. Around East London would be good, lots of tech companies with late 20's/30 year olds who were/are gamers who'll come to you after work. Brighton would probably be a good location too.

It's never gunna work in some sleepy Irish village.

Hmm good question. Despite working in software, I have limited coding skillz and, though I probably could turn my current job into something that works in the gaming industry, I have no major studios in a commutable distance and to be honest, it is just too uncertain. That said, my current ambition is to set up a comedy gaming podcast and blog with an old school friend. We have a name and logo sorted and have recorded some test bits. Now we just need to invest more time and get something recorded regularly. It is tough as we live in separate parts of the country and have jobs/wives/children/games getting in the way but it will be fun. We have some ideas that amuse us so we'll see. Will probably fall on its ar*e but hey, no risk no gain and all that.

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

@kyleforrester87 that wouldn't work in my town, couldn't even keep a a Video Game shop open here so a Game Pub has no chance

on topic no i don't really, i'm not smart enough or good enough at anything to be able to do anything of note, i'm just happy to play games

I used to want to be a developer, but being, err, "challenged" when it comes to technology, as well as the insane amounts of work some of these developers do under pressure made me reconsider. Some people still think I could do it, but those people are crazy.

I've thought about having some sort arcade-restaurant if I had ever had the money. Not quite a game bar, but something featuring rows of arcade games on one half of the building with the other being the dining part. More or less a restaurant with a heavy arcade focus. The menu would be a couple steps above fast food, with burgers, sandwiches, and other stuff that you might find at a bar n' grill. The games would hopefully have a healthy mix of classic arcade titles, shooters, racers, fighters, you name it.

It's definitely an idealistic venture, and I've probably thought about it more than I should. If it did happen, Dave and Busters would probably curb stomp me. But if I ever wanted something featuring gaming as a career, that'd probably be something I'd enjoy.

@kyleforrester87 Something kinda like that. I'd probably have the place look a little more spiffy myself, though. Maybe a bigger building too if I could.

Gaming is my everything because it fill the void in my heart.
I have an idea for a game that will change the gaming world but unfortunately is difficult for me to share that idea to the world because I don't have anyone to support me.

@Void-5 What's your elevator pitch for the game (short description)? I've always wanted to make a game too...

"Linear sandbox shooter with dinosaur and human enemies that require unconventional weapons and tactics to take down. All objects in the game world can be manipulated with physics, and add to the gameplay by presenting the player with a limited set of environmental tools to use for cover, ammo, and movement."

There's more to it (like a core gameplay hook I'm keeping to myself that, to my knowledge, hasn't been done before...maybe for a reason LMAO) but that's the gist. It's basically Half-Life + Crysis 1 + Turok, but I heard you should NEVER reference other games when you pitch a game.

Between me and a good buddy, we have all the skills to make a game (programming, 3D characters and animations, art & graphics, music) but just not the time! Making a short budget game is probably my biggest goal, and I really just need to jump in! No better time than now, right?

@Void-5 Ive heard this alot. I make music and right now earn bugger all from it. Say someone steals a riff from a tune and I earnt nothing, it would be annoying, of course it would. But apart from my ego taking a hit I will still have lost nothing - but with an oppurtunity to get compensation for my work. Spit it out man and dont leave us hanging!

@smelly_jr I am waiting for dreams to bash a few ideas together and from there, I may purchase a proper game development studio. As for time, right now I have less than ever but it will get better rolling into next year! Your idea sounds pretty awesome. I want to make a quick arcade game based on Qix were you gradually bring in the border of a 2d space a section at a time with enemies situated in the space your trying to take. The twist here would be the 2d surfaces from Qix would be on a 3d object and warp holes of some description would be on each surface to jump back and forth. You can zoom out at any time to view the whole object to see where you need to go next. Its hard to explain unless you see that moon old game but I think that would evolve that game akin to pacman / pacman championship edition or Defender / resogun. Check it out.

It's been a while that I dream of being able to fund my dream game, to be able to have the perfect game made just for me that completely satisfy me and all of my desires. My own paradise one could say. Of course I will never be that rich so I will never be able to do so, but maybe it could be not necessary: if Bethesda will create a remake of TES4 Oblivion with fine and comfortable third person view mode, full gamepad support (on pc it was not supported and I have it on pc right now even if I played it on X360 the first time) and characters models at least as good as in Skyrim then it will be close enough to what I dream of. The main quest suck, yes, but who cares about the main quest when everything else is so good and there is so much of it?
I think that this is at least rather possible and it is so incredibly convenient when other people fulfill your own dreams for you lol
I would prefer much more an official remake than just a mod (I'm not a big fan of mods) but at least right now people are talking about Skyblivion

I used to be a ripple user like you, then I took The Arrow in the knee
