@nessisonett Same here. Practically 90% of my high school friend group is LGBTQ+ so I've talked to them directly about the kind of crap they were dealt as a result of identifying with such people.

Whenever I see people vocalizing their distaste or lack of understanding on the topic it really rubs me the wrong way as a result

I've not paid much attention to the Rowling article comments. In general though, I do dislike all the insults, name calling, and sarcastic teasing that the more divisive articles usually have. Those toxic actions tend to just make me stop paying attention to whatever that user had to say on that matter.

Moderating is a tricky balance to get right, but I do think this site is generally better than most other websites. When the rest of the web is usually a free for all in terms of arguing and bickering, this site is normally calmer.

A few moderators might be good. Nintendo Life can get quite bad sometimes even with all their moderators, but I'm guessing that place would be much worse without them.

Plus, handing out some warnings could be a good deterrent.

TheFrenchiestFry

@crimsontadpoles Oh for sure. I'm honestly surprised but PushSquare is definitely a lot more welcoming of a site to be on than Nintendo Life, and that's really important considering how vile the community surrounding PlayStation can tend to get

Some people on this site have had pretty half-assed takes on things but I've never seen it get to the point where people are tossing derogatory insults at others and that's commendable. Although it can be entertaining when PushSquare readers take shots at Nintendo Life like during the hype cycle for Persona 5 Royal.

This “all viewpoints should be allowed” and “differing points of view” conversation is troubling @get2sammyb. Being LGBT isn’t a viewpoint, an opinion or a lifestyle choice; it is simply the way someone is born. This is scientific fact. And pegging bigotry and hate speech on the same level is offensive. Moreover, the there is not a reasonable way to be a bigot. Saying something homophobic in a polite manner doesn’t magically stop it being homophobic. Additionally, framing this conversation as “politics” simply gives a hate-filled argument a legitimate platform and places it on a “I’m entitled to my opinion, so there” pedestal. So I guess the real question is why won’t this site specifically come out and say that homophobia and transphobia is unacceptable and include it in the community rules? I guess the straddling of the fence is the privilege of the straight male who wants to outwardly appear welcoming. Their mere existence doesn’t offend a bigot, does it?

@mookysam I think the staff are doing a good job. Even if they put a specific "homophobia and transphobia is unacceptable" still people will be allowed to have a different opinion on the matter when they are polite.

Just because you feel offended should not dictate how the moderation on the site goes.

There were many comments these days that were in fact hateful and they were deleted.

Learn how to make a difference between blind hate and opinion that offends you.

@mookysam I think they already have it covered in their Community Rules to be fair:

3. Abusive Behaviour
a. Do not post offensive remarks towards others; Show respect for all users, remarks about racism, sexism, origin, creed and handicap will NOT be tolerated and will most likely be deleted by staff, and the poster will be warned, suspended or banned.

Part of the problem I notice is that nowadays is people need to realize we are all gamers. I have seen where users will call other users trolls and other things when there's is nothing wrong with what they say. If I were to go on say Nintendolife and say oh I haven't played my Switch in months there is nothing for me to play at so I have been enjoying the PS4, I will be called a troll. Tell me what's wrong with that statement? People need to learn that nowadays most people enjoy a variety of games and systems. Just because a site is called Nintendolife doesn't mean we have to only like Nintendo or Push Square and we only love PlayStation but yet so many people think that.

@Tasuki I think it's just that people tend to react like that if they're tied to that specific community since their natural instinct is to go "he's pointing out how he's specifically playing this other console that isn't related to Nintendo and that Switch doesn't have much in terms of new releases that interested him! He must think the console sucks!"

It's very one sided thinking and it also plays into stuff like why a lot of people on NintendoLife went on full meltdown mode when Joker was announced for Smash considering how little presence Persona has on Nintendo consoles, because it's not something they feel is appropraite given that it has little connection to them while it being on something that they have an attachment towards just causes that kind of confusion

@TheFrenchiestFry Oh I understand that but often it seems that they are given a free pass just because they "love" that said system. For example, the past few weeks I have been on one of these sites and there is a user that has to always stoke the flames even if the article has nothing to do with the other companies. Before you know it the comment section is all derailed and it's just users insulting one another. I have reported the user several times and other users have called the user out in the comments as well but the user still continues their way. I feel they haven't been punished at all because they also love to talk about how much they love the console of said site. Which I am sorry just breds that kind of thinking when it's encouraged and by the staff not doing anything about it encourages it

@Tasuki If thats who I think you mean then I’ve also reported them a few times for stirring up console wars and the like. They even somehow managed to start an argument because they were offended by a ‘virgin vs chad’ meme that was put up on the site.

I'd like to chime in here. But before I do, let me add that I have pretty thick skin. I find pushsquare really tame as opposed to other websites!

TheFrenchiestFry

@nessisonett Sounds like an *****. Have no idea who you are referring to but I always found console wars to be an inherently dumb concept. It's even contradictory considering there are actually notable Sony alumni who own competing consoles for personal keepsake, meaning they actually admire their "rivals". I'm pretty sure Cory Barlog has posted pictures of his personal gaming room and he has like two Nintendo Switches and an Xbox One in addition to a PS4 Pro

Obviously Sakurai flexed his console collection hard in the Min Min presentation as well.

@TheFrenchiestFry It’s not the sort of stuff that’s ever going to be bad enough for moderation but stoking the flames and causing conflict between consoles has been a real problem in the last couple of months. The problem is deciding the difference between valid criticism and plain trollling, which can be hard. Sarcasm’s also hard for some people to detect online, especially if English isn’t the user’s first language and so that can result in crossed wires too.

@nessisonett 'Flaming' others is against the rules, but I feel a lot of that goes on across all the sites, even more so that there are new consoles on the horizon. I agree there is a fine line between someone having a valid opinion and trolling.

@mookysam Yeah it is. The definition is prejudice or discrimination against someone on the basis of gender.

@Arugula

They are so bad this year! I knew they would be. I'd be happy to win 3 games. As long as we have gase as coach, it's all over.
