Gran Turismo 5's A Bigger Deal Than Any Exclusive Shooter Franchise Sony Could Have Offered This Fall.
Sony’s line-up has been exceedingly strong this year. In fact, it’s probably the strongest the PlayStation 3 has ever had. It’s been a banner year for the system, with games such as Heavy Rain and God Of War III all being massive success stories for the brand. It’s telling of the industry’s state that people should choose to criticise the line-up — MAG aside, there’s not been a banner exclusive shooter in Sony’s 2010 line-up; and with SOCOM 4 delayed people are now beginning to question the strength of Sony’s holiday offering. It’s a criticism that’s going nowhere.
This footage shot on the Comic-Con show-floor (courtesy of LittleBigPlanetLand), shows off one of LittleBigPlanet 2’s story levels. It looks as brilliantly crafted as you’d expect, with plenty of bouncing about and use of the new grapple-hook mechanic. We can’t wait.
If you weren’t already aware, Sony announced a bad-ass Collector’s Edition for the US yesterday. You better go order quick though — supplies were described as limited yesterday and it’s been selling like hot-cakes since then.
Good grief — LittleBigPlanet 2 is mere months away. It’s actually just hit us. The sequel to one of the greatest (and most ambitious) games ever crafted, is just over three months away. That’s just a quarter of a year, folks. Get hype.
The game was originally slotted in for simply “November”, but Sony of America’s clarified today that the whimsical platformer will drop on November 16th in the United States. SCEA’s also revealed details for a huge Collector’s Edition which will release in “limited” numbers alongside the game. You’re probably gonna have to be snappy with that pre-order button if you want it. We’ve listed full details of the CE after the jump.
There’s no date yet for the European version, but we assume it’ll be the same week as America. We simply can’t wait.
According To Media Molecule It Is Possible To Create Entire Games With LBP2, So Why Not Review Them?
When Media Molecule released LittleBigPlanet, they weren’t thinking small. And that same mentality is evident in the build-up to LittleBigPlanet 2. Media Molecule’s studio co-founder, Mark Healey, has told NowGamer that the studio has a “secret dream” for user generated content to be so good that it gets reviewed by traditional gaming websites. Does it get much more ambitious than that?
“A little secret dream we’ve got is that someone will make something in LittleBigPlanet 2 that’s so good that it actually gets reviewed on a website.”
“That would be really cool. Or even better, something wins an award that’s made with LBP 2. That would be fantastic.”
Healey reckons that the new tools in LBP2 should give creators more power to realise their imaginations: “Some people actually managed to make quite different kinds of gameplay experience by using various cheats and smoke and mirror techniques. If they could do that with the first game what they could do with this one I can’t wait to see. It’s going to be quite phenomenal.”
We’re already toying with the idea of bringing LittleBigPlanet 2 content closer to the fore-front of PushSquare, so this may well be the direction we end up taking. We’ll see. Either way, Media Molecule’s enthusiasm and ambition continues to inspire us.
PushSquare's Most Anticipated PlayStation Games Of Holiday 2010: LittleBigPlanet 2.
How could we possibly have an anticipated list without mentioning Sackboy? LittleBigPlanet 2 is indeed our most anticipated game of Holiday 2010. While we’re looking forward to all the games on this list, LittleBigPlanet 2 appears to be a step beyond everything else on offer.
Despite being two years since the original LittleBigPlanet, the concept is no less ambitious. “Create your own games” is the tag-line, and with years of experience behind LittleBigPlanet’s talented suite of developers, we’re anticipating what they do next with LBP2’s updated tool-set. Perhaps the biggest change in LittleBigPlanet 2 is the ability to give players complete control of the DualShock’s button mapping. This is huge because it opens up the ability to make game objects control in anyway the creator wishes. For example — instead of forcing Sackboy to hold a switch to enable the acceleration of a vehicle, it can now be mapped to the R2 button. The potential to create anything has truly arrived.
While we’re excited about playing LittleBigPlanet 2’s campaign, it’s the six-month period after the game launches that has us most excited. Jump into LittleBigPlanet right now and you’ll find incredible, incredible user generated levels. With the new tools on offer here, we expect our mind to be blown on countless occasions.
Five Nominations For Rage? None For LittleBigPlanet 2 & Killzone 3? Does Not Compute.
The Game Critics’ Best Of E3 2010 nominations have got out, with a variety of this year’s stand-out titles listed. While it’s a particularly strong showing, our heart goes out to Guerrilla Games who were given nothing but praise for Killzone 3 throughout this year’s showing and have seemingly been pipped at the post. LittleBigPlanet 2 is also notably absent. Id’s Rage, however, somehow scooped five nominations. Is there any justice in this world?
Marvel has (finally!) confirmed that a bunch of their famous characters are heading to the delightfully whimsical world of LittleBigPlanet. The DLC costumes will start dropping from July 7th. They’ll be releasing on the PSN every other week. There’ll be four different costume packs too, each containing five different costumes. We’ve embedded the full list after the jump.
If all that wasn’t enough, LittleBigPlanet will also be getting a “Marvel Level Kit”, which includes “four levels of adventure pitting your Sackpeople against the evil plans of Magneto”. You’ll net yourself a bunch of Marvel-themed music, backgrounds, stickers and objects from these levels. Amazing.
Remember, all the DLC will carry over to LittleBigPlanet 2, so you’re not wasting your money picking up LBP content this late in the game. Awesome.
Kudos to Sony. They’re not pulling their big-guns out of the Call Of Duty release window, and neither should they. There’s plenty of room for variety this Holiday season. Sony’s announced that LittleBigPlanet 2 will be released alongside Gran Turismo 5 in November of this year. No specifics on the date, but a November release (just five months guys!) has us brimming like a Cheshire Cat.
Naturally we can’t wait for this game. Media Molecule’s also announced a beta test due to start pretty soon.
We're Sure Creative Types Will Go Bonkers-Mad In The LittleBigPlanet 2 Beta.
Media Molecule’s Pete Smith and Lee Cubin have detailed in a video interview with 1Up that a beta for the massively ambitious LittleBigPlanet 2 is coming “fairly soon”. The interview also features some new footage from the game, which is obviously a big “yay” from us.
We’ve embedded the video after the jump. Hit it up.
The European arm of the PlayStation Blog has uploaded this rather charming little interview with Alex Evans and Mark Healey from Media Molecule. There’s not really any new gossip in there – though we’re sure that’s to follow tomorrow – but, alas, if you love LittleBigPlanet as much as we do, this is well worth a watch.
