Sony’s decision to bring comics to the Playstation Portable has always been something that’s stuck us as interesting. Interesting because we’re not entirely sure who the move is aimed at. Hardcore comic fans will surely prefer reading their superhero gossip on paper; and will casual comic readers care enough to download them to their PSP? These are questions we’re still yet to answer, but our hands-on with Digital Comics taught us one thing – the service is pretty good, whoever decides to use it.

Recently SCEE revealed a preliminary list of publishers who are signed up to their digital distribution comic scheme, Digital Comics. The list is headlined by Marvel, 2000AD (Judge Dredd), IDW (Transformers) and Disney. Sadly, there are a few notable absentees; namely DC who are nowhere to be seen.

The service is still yet to launch, and Sony claim to have announcements for some “great publishers soon,” so we assume DC are in the pipeline. Afterall, Sony are making a DC MMO. The relationship is there.

Those of you who have download firmware 6.20 for your PSP will be aware of the new “Extras” tab on the PSP’s XMB. This is a new section used to contain Sony’s upcoming Digital Comics service. The Playstation Store won’t be offering comics until next month, but Sony are eager to let fans check out the service a little early. All you need to do is hit up the Playstation Comics website and enter the provided code into the Playstation Store.

Preperation For The Upcoming Digital Comics Service Is The Big New Feature Of 6.20.

It’s a firmware day today. You might have guessed. You might not have. Either way, we can confirm that PSP firmware 6.20 is now available. The update adds the ability to import and export video and photo playlists from an updated version of Media Go, but the big deal is the new “Extras” icon on the XMB. This will pave the way for the upcoming Digital Comics service, which won’t go live until December in most parts of the world.

PSP Comics Service Coming To Japan On December 10th

Sony have dated the Playstation Portable comics service to those people in Japan. A firmware update will be available on November 19th, upgrading the PSP to 6.20 a few weeks ahead of the service’s launch on December 10th. For the Japanese store, individual comics will cost between ¥50-150 (USD$0.55-$1.70), while collections will run for the uniform price of ¥420 (USD$4.70).

Sony say the Western comics store will launch “a little later”. Are you excited about this, valued reader?

Interested in comics? Got a Playstation Portable? Sony totally have your back with the Digital Comics service they announced at GamesCom yesterday. The service will provide access to hundreds of Marvel comics when it launches later in the year, with a host of other publishers to be announced in the future. This is actually something we have a close eye on. We’ll be looking forward to what gets added and could spend a lot of money in it.
