GDC 10: Crytek Show Off CryEngine 3 For The First Time

Finally – we might be staring at the end of the Unreal Engine. Let it be known – here at PushSquare we hate the Unreal Engine. It’s such a bummer when a new game drops in the office and that familiar “U” pops-up the moment we push the disc into our system. The problem is: all Unreal Engine games look the fucking same. Shiny, fuzzy, crap. It has no personality whatsoever.

We dare say the natural progression to CryEngine 3 will result in familiar looking games also. But at least it looks pretty. Obviously, it’s strongest on the PC, but the console showcases are pretty impressive too.

(Sidenote: there are also some tidbits of Crysis 2 in here).

If you’re a game developer type, you’re probably really excited that Crytek’s CryEngine 3 games engine is totally available now. Aside from offering cutting edge next-generation graphics, CryEngine 3 is able to simultaneously test games on PC, PS3 and XBOX 360; so even if you don’t know how to develop for the PS3’s Cell – the CryEngine 3 will optimise the game.

“With its scalable graphics and computation it is next-gen-ready and with new features like CryEngine 3 Live Create the best choice for game developers and companies developing serious games applications alike,” claims Crytek boss Cevat Yerli. “It is the only game engine solution that enables real-time development and can ensure teams are able to maximize their own creativity, save budget and create greater gaming experiences.”

Hopefully we’ll see some great games from the engine in the future. It’s going to be a few years before we see the results though, right?

Off Screen Footage Of CryEngine 3 Running On The Playstation 3 Looks Pretty Amazing

Not much to say here other than: this is a video of someone filming someone playing with the new CryEngine 3 on the Playstation 3. The upgraded engine of the one that powered the likes of Crysis on the PC is finally coming to consoles and it’s looking rather spectacular, right?

Thank God some developers can bring their engine to the PS3.

CryEngine 3 On Playstation 3 Is Equal To CryEngine 2 On “Medium” Settings

Were you ever curious how CryTek’s new CryEngine 3 (running on Playstation 3) stacks up against the previous PC version, CryEngine 2? No, us neither, but those PC elitists – they just gotta remind us that their £1,500,000,000.01 rig is better than our lovely little Playstations.

If you watch the embedded video you’ll be able to read all the technical jargon and assumptions on how much better the PC is etc. Well duh! CryEngine 3 looks fine to our eyes, we’re just more concerned about it not being used in an utterly generic first person shooter.

E3 2009: Here’s Your First Trailer For Crysis 2…

… If you can call this a Crysis 2 trailer at all. It just looked like shards of floating glass on a black background to us. But hey, different strokes for different folks – no doubt the Crysis fanboys are already screaming “game of the year”.

Only Killzone 2’s graphics are talked about as much as those in Crysis. Simply put, on a high-end PC, Crysis is technically the best looking game ever built. And now it’s coming to the Playstation 3, via the creatively titled Crysis 2. Nothing else is known about the game, aside from the fact it will be built with the new CryENGINE3.

Fact: this will be at E3.

Crytek’s infamous CryEngine is many a fanboys wetdream. “Sure Killzone 2 might look good but, my PC’s £8999 setup with Crysis set to ‘uber’ looks about a billion times better y’all.” To which we respond – “shame the gameplay isn’t very fun.” Yo, burned.

It’s been no secret that Crytek have been working on their engine for consoles for some time now. Today at GDC their work was finally revealed. It does loads of stuff that no doubt some people will be interested in but, errr, we don’t understand a word of it so if you really want to read about that you can catch it here.

The rest of the ‘net seems to be in love with it but, honestly, we didn’t find the above tech demo all that exciting. What do you reckon?
