GDC 10: Crytek Show Off CryEngine 3 For The First Time

Finally – we might be staring at the end of the Unreal Engine. Let it be known – here at PushSquare we hate the Unreal Engine. It’s such a bummer when a new game drops in the office and that familiar “U” pops-up the moment we push the disc into our system. The problem is: all Unreal Engine games look the fucking same. Shiny, fuzzy, crap. It has no personality whatsoever.

We dare say the natural progression to CryEngine 3 will result in familiar looking games also. But at least it looks pretty. Obviously, it’s strongest on the PC, but the console showcases are pretty impressive too.

(Sidenote: there are also some tidbits of Crysis 2 in here).

Get The Lowdown On All This Year’s Big EA Titles In One Place, Yo

EA's Announced It's Release Schedule For The Next 12 Months.

EA's Announced It's Release Schedule For The Next 12 Months.

EA dropped some big names at their financial call last night, detailing the planned release windows for a host of killer franchises over the next 12 months or so.

Amongst the big Summer titles, EA’s announced that their big, futuristic reboot Medal Of Honor is due between July and September 2010. That means you can expect a huge push at this year’s E3.

Medal Of Honor will be followed by another huge EA shooter, as Crysis 2 is due to release in the October-December window, alongside a new entry in the Need For Speed franchise, presumably the one being handled by Burnout developers Criterion.

And if that wasn’t exciting enough, EA’s detailed that Dead Space 2 will launch in Q1 of 2011 alongside a slew of unconfirmed titles, including a new Dragon Age title, a Shooter from Epic, and an unconfirmed Need For Speed title. We’re thinking Need For Speed Shift 2.

Phew. So you can basically assume that even if you just buy EA games over the next 12 months, you’re going to be broke. There’s a lot of cool stuff there.

What are you most excited for?

CryEngine 3 On Playstation 3 Is Equal To CryEngine 2 On “Medium” Settings

Were you ever curious how CryTek’s new CryEngine 3 (running on Playstation 3) stacks up against the previous PC version, CryEngine 2? No, us neither, but those PC elitists – they just gotta remind us that their £1,500,000,000.01 rig is better than our lovely little Playstations.

If you watch the embedded video you’ll be able to read all the technical jargon and assumptions on how much better the PC is etc. Well duh! CryEngine 3 looks fine to our eyes, we’re just more concerned about it not being used in an utterly generic first person shooter.

E3 2009: Here’s Your First Trailer For Crysis 2…

… If you can call this a Crysis 2 trailer at all. It just looked like shards of floating glass on a black background to us. But hey, different strokes for different folks – no doubt the Crysis fanboys are already screaming “game of the year”.

It's Going To Be Interesting Seeing How Much Crysis Can Extrapolate From The PS3.

It's Going To Be Interesting Seeing How Much Crysis Can Extrapolate From The PS3.

Only Killzone 2’s graphics are talked about as much as those in Crysis. Simply put, on a high-end PC, Crysis is technically the best looking game ever built. And now it’s coming to the Playstation 3, via the creatively titled Crysis 2. Nothing else is known about the game, aside from the fact it will be built with the new CryENGINE3.

Fact: this will be at E3.
