SingStar Pop Edition Review

Europe PAL Version

Music games have a huge pool of popularity just now

You've got Rock Band, Guitar Hero, Rock Revolution - erm - Wii Music and many more. All of which cater to different crowds and different types of music genres. In the cases of the aforementioned - Wii Music's nursery rhymes aside - it's usually the commercial rock crowd. Thank goodness for SingStar, eh?

SingStar Pop Edition is more SingStar. Take this as a good or bad thing depending on your personal stance; virtually everything about SingStar Pop Edition is totally subjective. For our music tastes it's a little too sugar. Although, we're thanking our lucky stars for a music game that doesn't include Metallica or ZZ Top. The song lineup includes Bon Jovi, Alphabeat and Amy Winehouse to name just three. It basically contains the kind of music that everyone knows regardless of taste. There's a total of 30 songs in the package which should not be sniffed at - particularly when the game retails at £17.99.

Pop Edition comes with some improvements over it's franchise brethren - an improved interface and voice control make the experience much more seamless, something which Studio London are constantly striving to improve upon. The voice control works well and the interface is as glossy as ever.

And that's really all there is to say - it's SingStar. You sing songs, drink Cherryade with Amaretto and generally have a good time. All the usuaul features are available: the SingStore provides access to over 700 downloadable tracks and the MySpace-SingStar community aspect is still present.

The type of people that should take notice of this package are those looking for value - £17.99 for 30 new songs make this an excellent purchase when songs from the SingStore are £0.99 each - or people who are new to SingStar. In which case Pop Edition is the perfect package. However, if you've never been interested in the franchise then this will do nothing to change your mind. Especially if you can't stand Cyndi Lauper.
