Just under a year ago, it was announced District 9 and Chappie director Neill Blomkamp is lending his services to a AAA multiplayer shooter for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Fast forward to today and the project has been revealed as Off The Grid, a Battle Royale game that adds a narrative focus to the online genre. It's scheduled to launch for PS5 in 2023, and the first teaser trailer can be viewed above. No PS4 version has been confirmed.

Blomkamp is joined by Altered Carbon author Richard K. Morgan on the title, which as footage would suggest, is set in a "dystopian future". Off The Grid even has an executive narrative director, so it's clear story will be at the forefront of the game.

A press reveals that the traditional Battle Royale portion of the experience will pit 150 players against one another in a battle to see who comes out on top, but then there'll also be a PvE offering with story missions "using the same map inhabited by other players in real time". The decisions you make will supposedly impact on everyone else's game, with customisation, crafting, and trading all core components of the game.

Neil Blomkamp describes Off The Grid as Battle Royale 2.0 with deep player progression. "With an innovative approach to the Battle Royale core session flow and a deep narrative experience, we add purpose to each element of the game, allowing players to revisit the OTG world repeatedly where there is always something new to find and explore, and for us to expand upon." More information will be shared in the coming months.
