Square Enix has kept us waiting, but it's now finally time to play the PlayStation 5 demo of Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin thanks to a new patch that actually makes it playable. The majority of players reported an immediate corruption issue upon launching the playable teaser, which should no longer be a problem after downloading the update. It's version 1.03 you're looking for, by the way.
Now we have the chance to see if the game is as bad as it actually looked in the announcement trailer from last weekend. As a quick reminder, Nioh developer Team Ninja is developing this one in tandem with Square Enix, and it's the twosome's take on Dark Souls, essentially.
So, now that the demo is actually playable, come back to this article and share your thoughts in the comments below.

[User was banned for saying Chaos too many times]
@Terra I'll do it, Henry. Don't you tempt me!
It looks pretty ropey but i’m always up for a new Soulslike steeped in rich, loamy lore!
@LiamCroft Liam please, we can be reasonable
The game from what I've played so far is Final Fantasy Nioh and I'm fine with that. The quality is also there, the trailer was just cut REALLY BAD.
The....C.... mayhem of it all!
Lemme try this demo for some reason
Can we kill Chaos in it? It's the only reason I'll play it...I hate Chaos.
Removed - disrespecting others
The "chaos" this must have caused for someone who rushed to play the demo right after it got announced.
Cool, I'll give it a go when I get home tonight.
Such a chaotic rollout. I just finished download it again and it didn't work, so this patch must have just arrived after I started the download.
It's chaos. Honestly. Nothing short of chaos.
😏
I might give it a go but the designs for this one are so uninspired and bland that I genuinely don't know what Square was thinking.... dude's just wearing a simple shirt....
They should have called this game “Prisoners in Paradise” and have the Europe song in the intro. Lost opportunity.
If I hear chaos one more time !!
I can’t wait for everyone who blasted the trailer to actually play it. This plays amazingly well. Combat feels punchy, with some added crunch in there. Different classes, loot. It is exactly what I hoped it would be which is Nioh x Final Fantasy.
BuT cHaOs… stop. Go play this demo.
@Steel76 "Might give it another chance, when the game is finished."
I honestly read this as "Might give it another chaos, when the game is finished."
So bad trailer then? Hmm, maybe I won't write it off completely then.
Look I like the gameplay. But the dialogue at a certain fight literally made me cringe. Why is the writing in some games less creative than what one could find in a child's essay homework?
Should have included a cross over with Sonic the Hedgehog. Would have made more sense for this game to focus on Chaos Emeralds instead of Crystals.
I thought Sonic already took care of Chaos but looks like I'll have to play this and get the job done.
Playing this after Ratchet & Clank was painful 😅 feels like a cancelled PS3 game that is being "remastered"
Yeah the trailer was bloomin awful but will still give the trailer a go. Hopefully I won't forget before the 24th.
Oh just an FYI, not sure if it’s just me but there’s no haptic feedback, like, at all. Still though, really enjoying the demo.
Combat is pretty good but it still looks awful, like some here are saying it looks like a PS3 game. I was playing Demon's Souls just before this so it looks extra awful for me, it needs a long time in the oven.
It was.. Surprisingly ok? It's prob not a game i'll be rushing to play but that awful trailer does it a bit of a mis-service.
Sure, the awful corny dialogue is still the worst part of it but it plays pretty decent tbf
Man, this demo is pure "Chaos" but I'm just glad that they released this early. At least they can work on some improvements, provided that they are open for feedbacks.
I mean it's team ninja. You can see from the trailer just how fun the combat looked if you could step away from all the chaos for a bit
I really wish i had a ps5 right about now, would love to try it out
Hell yeah! I will finally have my shot at demolishing Chaos!
The game seems to be really far away from release and it shows in this demo (release is in 2022?).
But gameplay wise it is fun so far. And the music is great!
Just something seems to be extremely wrong with the image quality. As mentioned before, it kind of looks like a PS3 game running on 4K. Same grey/sepia-ish tone with missing sharpness.
I guess it can only get better from here. I’m happy to buy it day one if they manage to make it look better on a 4K screen.
Played the demo, it was rough, but potential is there.
I think they need to delay the game based on what I've played and hopefully they take player feedback on board from the demo experience.
Graphics and tone need a revamp.
And the dialogue needs reworking.
Fingers crossed they can get it up to scratch!
Tried it the combat is solid as usual for Team Ninja but good god I can't stand the edge lord characters and their HARDCORE EDGY dialogue it was quite exhausting 😑
Gave it a go on normal and easy.
Normal felt good until the boss where I proceeded to get destroyed repeatedly. Felt like it was a very large difficulty spike. Easy was...very easy. I think they need to balance that a little bit. The boss was a joke on easy and I failed on normal, just felt weird in that regard.
Frame rate has some issues and overall the game looks pretty bland. The dialogue as has been mentioned is comically bad.
I think the game has a lot of promise but will need a decent amount of work before release.
I actually enjoy this demo quite a bit. The writing is horribly campy and the controls are blatantly Nioh but it works.
They should have called this game 'Strangers in Paradise' and had it being about two hot lesbians, one with a huge caboose.
@Rob_230 I never understood that. They are ALL emeralds, but one is green, one is red, one is yellow etc... Uh, aren't they different gemstones?
Modern Gaming: even the Demos are broken at launch.
@PossibLeigh It's the Chaos distorting the colour! 🤣
@Orochilocka Big agree here. I was expecting trash based off the trailer, but after playing the demo all the way through this is an absolute day 1 buy for me.
Demo tip! Use that lightbringer!
Can any one confirm if the game have dualsense support?
@Rob_230 He's such a cheeky chap.
@Floki I hear on the grapevine that the free demo does not. The full game will almost certainly feature some implementation. Personally, I'm hoping for a more advanced version of the 'jerking off' motion from No More Heroes.
@PossibLeigh You would think that the demo would also have some implementation of it so they can get feedback...
@Floki I guess the demo not having it is a major indicator that their implementation will be surface level at best. We should probably get used to that in 3rd party games going forward.
Still, it's a very generously sized demo waaay before it's release date so let's not knock it. I'd love to see other publishers follow this.
Is this 720p? It's so blurry. The worse looking game Ive played on ps5 by far. The gameplay looks quite deep though...well I assume it is as it has you stop for tutorials every 5 mins even after you e just completed the tutorial. But, though I like souls games, I found I got bored of this quick
Glad to hear the corruption was finally patched! Hopefully the demo is still live when I get off work tomorrow.
