THQ Nordic is returning to a beloved PlayStation 2 title with SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated. It's a full-on remake of the fan favourite platformer, but developer Purple Lamp Studios hasn't stopped there. Going above and beyond, the studio has resurrected a cut boss battle from the original game and turned it into a brand new, horde-style multiplayer mode.
This brief new video gives us a decent look at what to expect. It seems like a fairly straightforward co-op mode in which you and one other player, either local or online, fend off increasingly dangerous waves of baddies. The cut boss, a giant robot Squidward, overlooks the chaos, intervening with missiles and other hazards. Perhaps most interesting of all is the four new playable characters this mode introduces. In the original game, you swap control between SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy, but this new multiplayer adds Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Plankton, and Gary to the playable roster.
SpongeBob Rehydrated floats onto PS4 on 23rd June. Will you be catching the bus to Bikini Bottom once again? Grab your spatulas in the comments section below.

Cannot wait for PS5 to allow us to choose which parts of a game we want downloaded. Call me cynical but I don't think I'll be touching this mode at all. My excitement for this game is sky high but this mode just doesn't do it for me. I wish they'd done something splitscreen instead, preferably with platforming as that's where the game's strengths are. Regardless, June 23rd can't come soon enough, wanna platinum this game badly.
I better does not have any online trophies because it looks horrible. 😆
This game can't come soon enough!
Man I miss 3D platformers, my favourite genre, yet had a pretty short life cycle.
@Ichiban Same here, i absolutely adore 3D platformers ! it's so sad that most publishers won't touch the genre any more but at least in the last few years at least we've had a few more examples, i am so hyped to get Hydrated, had it pre-ordered for about four months lol
Judging from the embedded trailer, it looks like a pretty standard PS2 era multiplayer mode.
Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Yeah I going to have to wait on this game until I find out if it has multiplayer trophies or not. I hope it leaves them out.
@JohnKarnes @Flaming_Kaiser The trophy list is online, if I remember rightly there are no multiplayer trophies.
@Quintumply Thanks for the info the obscure online trophies are so annoying. Still have nightmares about the boosting of the Tombraider online trophies.
