The Last of Us 2 is a lot more inventive than its predecessor in the puzzle department, meaning there are only a handful of instances where you’ll be moving wooden planks and repositioning ladders. One of the new mechanics that Naughty Dog’s dreamed up is an evolution of the systems from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and it sees you utilising ropes or cables to create makeshift climbing solutions.
But as showcased in the video embedded above, the physics are outrageous. It’s possible to get cords tangled around objects, and there’s no clipping or anything like that. The rope will pull taut when it’s trapped, and Ellie will be unable to move while she’s holding onto it. As you can see, this looks and feels great, and it really adds an extra wrinkle to the gameplay during some navigation challenges.
Of course, if you’d like to know how to use the ropes in the game to find some secrets, you can always refer to our The Last of Us 2 guide. What do you think of the title’s puzzles so far? Get wrapped up in the comments section below.

I just watched the video after you retweeted it. Seriously impressive stuff.
That rope part in your main image annoyed me too much to appreciate the physics. I thought i was aiming for one of the broken pipes/bars, rather than that main structure. It took me waaaay to long to work it out 😬😖
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L Just trolls, isn't it? The discourse surrounding this game is a disgrace.
It won't be long until some hilarious person makes a willy shape out of it and posts it on PS Live.
I saw the tweet and apparently it is the work of an extremely talented developer called Jaros Sinecky. It’s cool seeing other developers commenting on how difficult it must have been to implement.
Hahaha, I would spend WAY too long with this aspect doing absolutely nothing worth while... and loving it. XD
The level of detail in this game is frankly absurd.
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L 10/10 best rope physics.
When I finally get the game and make it to this bit I’m going to see if I can make a knot.
I was playing a part last night, threw the rope then went to run past it. Caught it with my head and it pulled it down 😂
It is really impressive, I was playing this last night. Accidentally pulled a power cable back over a fence by running through it and dragging it with me.
But the best part was I was riding towards an outstretched cable which I had previously thrown. Instead of the character being hit across the neck by the cable due to its height, the character automatically ducked to avoid it, as I rode under it, fantastic AI.
I really wish ND would stop forcing their agenda of realistic rope physics down my throat.
@LieutenantFatman I know exactly what part you are referring too. I went back at full speed and even walking speed. The detail they’ve put out is tremendous.
It's not the only thing fans are going crazy over, and it's not something good.
The swinging physics was sooooo much better in Uncharted 4. It's just that the physics rules were from another universe.
There is a little bit of clipping when they wrap it around the doorway and the window, as it clips in to the ground and through itself a little bit.
Still, it's incredibly impressive, as only a few years ago games couldn't get bedsheets to look right. 😂
Every game I play, I find the first mirror and see if there is a reflection. Needless to say, I was ecstatic when I saw the first mirror in this game! 😁
I was blown away by how accurate the rope felt during that part. Even little things like the grime under Ellie’s fingernails is amazing. ND’s attention to detail is one of many reasons they are such a top tier studio.
I am not crazy! 😅🤣😂
It was like 2AM by the time I got to the main gate. And I spent way more time than I needed in that part mesmerized by the cable.
It is not just the physics - it is how everything in the scene interacts with each other and the triggered animations when it happens. The attention to detail is amazing.
I can't believe I thought that the critics were right about this game. Even Push Square... Never again am I going to trust you.
@Nepp67
That's on you for wanting someone else to form your opinion for you.
@Crimson_Ridley It sure is, but I'm glad I watched before my copy shipped so I could cancel it quickly. I'm just going to ignore this sequel ever existed.
@Nepp67
That's perfectly fine. I've been playing it for hours and I'm loving it! I know so many people believe an agenda is being pushed, and all that jazz, but that's just a reflection of their own personalities.
Regardless, that's neither here or there, and not important. You should come to your own conclusions, and if the game isn't for you, then just keep the first game in your heart and forget this one.
@Agramonte Same here. I think I did the same as everyone else, and walked with the rope to the socket, but of course it wasn't long enough so it janked me back. Then I realised you can throw it as well. Brilliant bit right there.
When I used the rope I didn't pay too much attention but when I got to the power cord I noticed that it wouldn't reach and thats when I started messing around with it. I'm now exploring downtown Seattle and this game is on another level to any other I've played in terms of world building and exploration and I've loved the story so far
Saw the rope physic on Digital Foundry review and it looked the best i have seen so far in a game.
Last of us 2 and ghost of tsushima the PS4 is going out with a bang!!!
Though i can see loads of PS4 games still coming out next year and then get visual improvements for PS5 versions.
The way she was folding the rope over would have tangled it up when she threw it. 3/10 game rating!
Rope physics are great. If the game was called Rope Physic Simulator it would be a 10/10. That's not what it is though.
I've had to take a little brake, the game is intense. But it is also the most polished day 1 game I can remember playing. This games shows Nintendo how a game should release and that is truly rare
@TooBarFoo ya I shut it off for the rest of today. I played about 15 hours and I need a breather. Such an amazing game.
@Crimson_Ridley I don't care for the agenda pushing. I just care how they treat the characters and how incredibly disrespected they were. It's good to see people like you who are civil about it.
@Nepp67
I just don't see the reason not to be civil. The world is way too angry lately, and it seems like we've grown so accustomed to it that we actively seek out more things to be mad at.
I just like that we can have different opinions on something, voice those opinions, and not resort to attacking each other over them. It's refreshing, so thank you.
Rope physics? Won't someone think of the puddles?!
@Octane Shogun shut down the comments on the other article so I'm replying to you here. 😉
I can't play TLOU2 after my kids go to bed b/c I go to bed around midnight and they go to bed, well I don't know b/c I'm sleeping in bed. #TeenageLife
Guess I can play it from 7AM until noon while they're sleeping, may seem less scary then. But either way I think it will be a while, I'm really more a Paper Mario kind of guy. 😁
Never noticed this detail. I guess it just isn't important for me. As long as I'm having fun, it's great. Regarding angry mobs for this game: the game reflects life when ***** hits the fan. We saw it ourselves in this pandemic. At the start of it, if you went to the supermarket, you'd see the lack of certain items, because some/many bought more that they need, out of fear. Others were left without those items. Not talking about only one item here, mind you(toilet paper). There were cans of food, pasta, sauces... whatever. Because many, out of fear, took more than needed. At the cashier, people argued. Almost fistfights.
In this game, I like how creators "disrespected" main characters from the previous part. Nobody is important, just like in the real world. Life can, and often is unfair sometimes, and ***** happens.
It's good (for me) that the game is the way it is. Arouses reflection, disapointment, resentment and many other emotions we wish to sweep under the rug and ignore. This game may be praised in a couple of years. Even by those who spit on it because their idea of a perfect sequel was not realised. Well that is life. One doesn't often get what one wants. If you want all pink and rosy out of a game, play nintendo(which I have and love too).
Happy gaming everyone.
"Fans Are Going Crazy Over The Last of Us 2's Rope Physics"?
No, no they're not, no one is playing this game and looking past all of the flaws this game has to talk about the rope physics.
This game has too many outdated gameplay mechanics and problems to be thinking about rope physics smh.
@80sGamer
Agreed. Sensitive people these new generations.
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L I score it 17000/10 to make up for the review bombing and too piss people off.😆
@grahamd Have you seen anything like this before with this kind of detail.
i saw a clip on twitter on this. the game design is amazing. From a story telling aspect, it might be non-replayable (i still have to see for myself).
But there's no denying that if it is re-mastered for ps5, it will definitely have to be revisited.
Yea I realized, it's incredible. I feel sorry for you if you're in the group that's not getting this game's hype and can't appreciate attention to detail, especially when it's critically acclaimed by everyone else and you just don't see it. So sorry for you.
@Nah900 I'm really impressed that there's finally a game with horses as real as RDRII's. Overall it's only natural that everything in the game is impressive, I mean this is NAUGHTY DOG.
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L I'm now ten hours in and the mechanics are smoother buy a mile compared to last game. Its graphically superb also up their with red dead 2. I was shocked at how smooth the horse rides are also. My only two complaints would be part of the story, its not that bad but its far from great And each time I'm exploring dina gets stuck. Sometimes in door ways or just when running about. Bar that I'm enjoying it and recommend to use a decent headset like the Sony platinum headset or gold if u have it. Or skull candy bass crushers which are great for anything with bass and tension packed moments. But for 3d surround sound use gold or platinum. Those clickers sound scary as *****. But i give the game 7/10 so far. Maybe an 8 once I'm finished.
@TheArt my thoughts exactly
I'm going crazy over the safes when you hit the right code it makes a slightly different sound, just sort of like reality 👍🏻
@get2sammyb that's all it is. The immersion is superb. If people can't handle lesbians. Then go play days gone. That game was brilliant story was good and u got a good forty to fifty hour game. So if people want to bitch about tlou2 go play days gone is what i would recommend for a zombie fix with a story.
0/10, I hate ropes, I love ladders
I hope stuff like this is standard next gen. What's the water like?
@Matroska Ladies and Gentlemen, one of the trolls have revealed themselves. The penalty for trolling is death. Let's kill him.
I'll trade this amazing physics for a proper meaningful ending.
Further proof that regardless of the problems on the story and character side, the technical side is top notch (as has become the case for Naughty Dog titles). Be interesting if this tech gets implemented in other titles, as it could lead to more interesting puzzles and/or traversal options.
