This really is the week that'll lift the lid off the next generation. Microsoft's Xbox Series X unveiling of third-party games will take place later this week on Thursday, but publisher Daedalic Entertainment has already beaten it to the punch. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has been announced for PlayStation 5, arriving next year, and here's your first look at the title with lots of new screenshots.
As you can see, we get multiple glimpses of Gollum itself alongside a rather scary shot of four gigantic spiders before pulling out with a shot of Mordor. Is that Mount Doom in the background? We think so. It even looks like you'll be able to make choices and dialogue decisions at points in the game. The platform these screenshots have been pulled from isn't stated, but since The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is only planned for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, we can be sure that the final experience will look somewhat similar to the images before you on Sony's system.
Are you impressed by these screenshots? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I'm not keen on the art style here.
Wow this looks amazing. PS3 really will be a game changer...
'Are you impressed by these screenshots?' Not really. I had high hopes for this title, but that last screenshot looks like a remastered PS3 screenshot to be honest.
I hope I'm proven wrong when it actually arrives on the PS5, but this game looks really cheap and lastgen at the moment.
That’s disappointing, it’s not quite as dark or epic as I was hoping. He looks like roadkill.
Damn looks horendously ugly.
this could probably is the switch version
Im not really a big fan of the Gollum game idea.
Hopefully it’ll look a bit better in motion.
I think for next gen, screenshots aren't going to be a great indicator of how far they have advanced. Things like HDR, Ray Tracing and of course framerates are going to need videos to really get across how many benefits we will be getting
Looks like it was made in Dreams.
Weirdest screenshot i ever seen.are you playing?as the gollum.word up son
Looks like crap. The orcs especially look like an early PS3 game. Disgusting.
But I'm pretty sure that's the devs' fault, not the PS5's or the X-Series X's.
Not a fan, I'm afraid.
The graphics don't look any better than what you could get on the PS4 but still,I'm really excited for this one.
Looks good,! That lighting especially,.! For a third party title made by Daedalic entertainment studio.
It is not a big know studio. But compare to their other title this look Amazing.
The artstyle goes for a Knack kind of feel, while the gamers will compare the visuals to those of Shadow of Mordor and will be heavily disappointed.
I'd need to see the characters in action but it's bold, I'll give them that.
At least they've tried to get away from the Jackson Middle-earth and attempt their own thing.
I'll keep an open mind....for now.
sorry they dont look any more impressive than current gen
Looks like an old lucasarts point and click!
mixed feelings here…
There are quite a few games which make me say to myself … "Why is this game being made?" This is one of them.
I mean, who thought that 'Boy, wouldn't it be cool to make a game about a crazy, pathetic being who talks to itself and gets bullied and beat up by everyone while it chows down on fish and imagines having a piece of jewelry' and someone actually greenlit this project?
@TrueAssassin86x
Outriders is cross gen.
@IronMike
'Back to the future"-like.
blaaaahhhh. talk about a disappointing look into the future.
so is Liam the only person who like the look of this?
I'm okay with this. Quite curious about what the gameplay will be like.
Graphically it looks whatever. The textures on the models is really poor. Not to mention the hair work on Gollum, doesn’t look next gen at all. Considering they are focusing only on next gen I somewhat wonder why it looks current gen or even in parts like @mergatro1d have mentioned, a PS3 game.
Will need to see more.
Considering its next gen only i kinda expected more from this, the Gollum from Shadows of Mordor looks better in my opinion.
Wow this is awful...
Christ! This Gollum looks like his taken a load of drugs. 100% this is going to fail, they need to stick with the current art style ideally.
The graphics look definitely better than a regular PS2 game. But a PS3 can handle it, I have no doubt!
I have mixed feelings on this one. Seeing it in motion might be more convincing.
Some of the texture work is actually really detailed (especially skin and armor), but then some of it looks painted - akin to Darksiders.
The lighting looks pretty nice and the wide shot of Mordor shows some impressive shadows and cloud/smoke detail.
There is still plenty of time to polish the visuals.
I thought they weren't making games for the Vita anymore?
Probably not the best title to highlight any graphical advantages of PS5. To me, that doesn't seem to show anything which PS4 couldn't do.
This is why I'm not fussed about the graphical side of things in terms of ever increasing resolution. I'd rather have the power pushing four times more detail at 1080p, than pushing the same detail in four times more pixels at 4K.
@Nickolaidas
(Diagnosing Gollum)
Gollum’s diet is extremely limited, consisting only of raw fish. Vitamin B-12 deficiency may cause irritability, delusions, and paranoia. His reduced appetite and loss of hair and weight may be associated with iron deficiency anaemia. He is hypervigilant and does not seem to need much sleep. This, accompanied by his bulging eyes and weight loss, suggests hyperthyroidism. Gollum’s dislike of sunlight may be due to the photosensitivity of porphyria. Attacks may be induced by starvation and accompanied by paranoid psychosis….
Gollum displays pervasive maladaptive behaviour that has been present since childhood with a persistent disease course. His odd interests and spiteful behaviour have led to difficulty in forming friendships and have caused distress to others. He fulfils seven of the nine criteria for schizoid personality disorder (ICD F60.1), and, if we must label Gollum’s problems, we believe that this is the most likely diagnosis.
I think people will be very disappointed with the visuals next gen, at least for a few years. I know we haven't seen much yet, but what we have seen is average. Hopefully sony can have some great exlusives ready for launch to stand out.
@Nickolaidas fun fact the same guy who is hype for the ps5 Green light this

After reading the comments, I'm glad I wasn't the only one to think this isn't much better than PS3 graphics. It's still a year away, so maybe it will improve but as of now, not impressed at all.
I love the Lord of the Rings, but never once did I want to play a whole game as Gollum.
@Ridwaano Come on bro. Fish is loaded with B12. Know your vitamins.
I thought April Fools day had already been and gone????
@TrueAssassin86x Eh? What on Earth are you waffling on about?!
Looks like PS5 is backwards compatible with PS2 games afterall.
Environments look decent.
The character models... ehhh, not so much.
@kyleforrester87 oh oh you right.. Fail comment !...
The art style is hideous! It looks half way between a love child of telltale and realism that had an aborted cronenberg baby together 🤢🤮. Suffice to say, this ain't a glimpse at next gen by any stretch, and this definitely ain't it, chief. Also, why does sméagol look like a balding Steve Buscemi, only more bug eyed. DISGUSTING.
Smooth!
No, literally, smooth!
Where's the texture for the roughness of his skin? He looks like he's just been expelled from the womb.
@TrueAssassin86x
There's also observer: redux and quantum error, obviously there's going to be another assassins creed (i.e. the one universal constant).
Looks like a switch port!
@Ridwaano 😂
@GADG3Tx87
Or a burn victim. Looks like the early days of 360 when you had to wait a whole minute for the textures to pop in lmfao
Lord of the Rings: Abe's Odyssey Remaster
Yes Finally people are not comparing to PS2 games, instead to PS3 games such improvement , LOL
@Nickolaidas
I mean, that is literally the character from the much beloved LOTR franchise...so obviously there's some ambition for a game. The execution, however...yeah, the least we say the better. Not bad, but not great.
This reminds me of Styx and its sequel which i both enjoyed - the characters look terrible though - i presume they couldn't afford to Andy Serkis to do the mo cap??????
I really thought that this was a joke article cause Gollum on that first pick looks awful lmao...what the heck is this?
Yep, so along with everyone else. This looks pants. But not to worry the PS5 may not match the XB but it will be capable of much better than what is show here.
Uhh. Those Orcs in the last screenshots appears like something my 12 year old daughter would sketch, because while Orcs are ugly, she doesn't want to make them too ugly. So she pretties them up a little bit.
Nice to see the PS3 is still getting support!
I think it'll be about 2-3 years before the PS5 can show us what it can really do. Until then, they're just going to look like high end PS4 games.
To be fair, Daedalic are a small company that normally do 2D sprite games. This is kind of like judging next gen graphics based on the next Senran Kagura or Neptunia game.
It looks like Kingdom of Amalur. I'm not blown away.
@Zach_99 Oh, I don't question the importance of the IP, I'm questioning their choice of a main character.
I mean, what's next? A Spider-Man game where aunt May is the main character?
@SimonB Yea I agree. That's why I'll be waiting about that long to get one. Nothing I've seen looks next gen.
@Zach_99
Too true! I remember the rendering on X360 sometimes taking a while. Particular memories of BioShock with that.
Great game though.
@Nickolaidas
I mean, aunt May kinda died...so that's unlikely. Jokes aside, the character has potential in line with the movies before, but maybe the character has been a bit milked in perspective and the execution maybe not the best, but we pretty much don't know anything yet aside from the look of the game. One thing I agree in is that this definitely fails to impress in regards to next gen prowess graphically. Hopefully it's a substance over style thing, but who knows. I am certainly not holding my breath.
That first picture of gollum made him look like he was made in DREAMS
Did not impress us, precious.
Even for a PS4 launch title isn't impressive!
Like some of the comments said, it's look like some fun art in Dreams!
Hopefully it plays well!
Nothing about this looks like it wouldn't be able to run on modern-gen consoles. I can't, for the life of me, understand why there wouldn't be cross-gen support.
A bit creepy or ugly with his face xD but that's the point and is it just me or should style of the game should look better for a PS5.
@Mergatro1d for sure. Lol
@Mr_Persona let's hope they're still polishing this game. Not on my list to buy, but let's hope it gives the new console justice graphically.
@KAPADO agreed
No not at allit looks not really well evan on ps5 which im wanting more but seeing days gons graphics seeing this look like a lower grade version
These screenshots honestly don't look all that impressive to me. Does this really look like a huge leap over current gen? I don't think so. I mean, I am viewing them on my phone's 1080p screen. I'll reserve final judgement until I see games actually running on a PS5, but these look pretty unremarkable.
@Nickolaidas Ha ha ha ha hilarious comment.
Hope not because if that's the case the future doesn't look any better than the present
@Mergatro1d Exactly
@TurboTom Yeah from what I've seen I'm not sold on next gen. I can almost guarantee assassins creed Valhalla will look the same on ps4 and ps5.
Not impress at all.
This looks like a ps3 game. Awful.
@Mergatro1d you win the day with that comment.
Hard pass. I can't imagine a scenario in which I would ever want to play as Gollum. The graphics aren't even that impressive.
Does that Orc have bewbs? If not, why is he wearing a bikini top?
Are these screenshots from the mobile version?
and this you will need 150gb of hard drive space for, lol
Them teeth on the orcs, looks like they were drawn in Paint.
These are just screenshots, but playing as Gollum in a video game just doesn't really interest me as it stands. Hmm... Not into it.
i'm not a graphics snob but this does NOT look good
i know they no longer use the style of the movies but those designs were great and still look great
and i hope this isn't based on the style of the Amazon series because if it looks like that there will be a lot of unhappy LotRs fans out there
The chick on the bottom left has oddly spaced boobs
Yeah, graphics aren't great but I'm more disappointed that we have skipped straight to Mordor in game 1. I was really hoping for some early Gollum story, where there is a ton of creative freedom and opportunity to see Gollum really struggle not to lose himself, as well as seeing new settings.
This looks like they are skipping to early Fellowship when Gollum gets caught, or they are writing Gollum as having gone to Mordor more than once? I don't like it.. Still probably gona buy it haha
I read somewhere else that it’s trying to have the same art that Tolkien used to draw back in the day. It’s this is true it would be nice to play it from this perspective not looking to all the possibilities the next gen could offers. I will buy it just vecaude the fellowship of the ring.
