PlayStation Disables Likes, Dislikes, and Comments on The Last of Us 2's New Trailer

No comments are for the better.

I don't see why the likes had to be disabled. I'm sure certain groups will come out and spam the dislike button to no end, but whatever. This only gives them more fuel.

I'm actually totally fine with this considering how gigantic the leak was. I even got a big reveal spoiled for me just from a stupid screenshot floating around on YouTube.

I don't usually advocate these companies having a tight grip on the likes/dislike and comments on a video, but I'm cool with it in this case.

I am so ready! No other game has been an emotional ride like quite like The Last of Us imo.

It’s sad to see. I got the game spoiled on me by some dude on twitter in a conversation about boxing, so be careful anybody who hasn’t been spoiled yet.

Saying that. I’m still going to buy it. I want to form my own opinion. I don’t want to feed into the hysteria surrounding the game. I’m sure experiencing it will be much better than seeing how the story unfolds in bullet points on Twitter.

What the heck? This is as bad as the time Nintendo did the same thing with Metroid Prime Federation Force. Bit disappointed in Sony to be honest, I expected better.

normally i would not condone this behavior from a big publisher BUT given the situation surrounding this game i think in this instance it was the correct thing to do because you know the comments section will just be full of people spoiling the game for others or complaining about it

The Xbox Fans are really SCARED of this game They know it will move millions of PlayStation's and give a MASSIVE boost to the PS5 just like the original TLoU did with the PS4. That is why some people are trying to bring this game down. Can't wait for this game

@AdamNovice That would explain the comments, but what about the likes/dislikes? Are they afraid of the seemingly vocal minority disliking it and making everyone who see the trailer think the game is going to be bad?

Based on what I've seen here, most people seem to be committed to buying the game anyway. Not to mention, I am sure the game will sell like crazy given how well the first one sold, so why are they so concerned? As far as I am concerned, this whole situation has been handled poorly.

I think we know in 2020 that people have got a little self entitled over demanding that stories in books, tv, and games have to go the way they imagined they would in their heads, but then Sony wants the Last Of Us 2 to be true to an artistic vision and sell millions of copies. Those two things aren’t normally comfortable bedfellows.

Until the thing comes out we can’t tell the true quality of the product, but if there is an unpopular story point it will put off certain people from buying it. I mean look at Game Of Thrones and Star Wars.

Every company should've done this a long time ago. And I don't blame the companies, I blame people because nobody can handle an opposing point of view. This is one of the few times I will say something pro-corporation vs. the consumer. And with MS starting the hype train for Xbox Series X tomorrow and Sony surely soon to follow with PS5 showings, yeah, the sh*t on youtube and the like is only going to get worse.

It's fair. If people dont get it it's no surprise either because they dont use their brain often it seems.

I remember trying to hide from potential spoilers for Infinity Wars and ended up stumbling upon them in the comments on a completely unrelated topic. I didn't see all of them but enough to know what happened to a good number of characters. I still enjoyed the film though.

I was sent spoilers for RDR2 by some little jerk after only having had the game for a few days. I still played it and ended up loving it.

Some people though, just pure scum. I guess it's true, some people just want to watch the world burn.

Internet without comments would be about 100% better.
Then again, this world would be 100% times better without humans (most of them anyway)

I'm mixed on this, I understand why they would do this but I do think it's a little bit of damage control and kinda would show how weak and vulnerable Sony or ND is at handling this issue as a whole

Naughty Dog is pretty much in a situation where they can't win. If they didn't upload the trailer the ancipation for the game would've been decreased. But with the comments and likes/dislikes disabled people who aren't aware of the leaks are now more concerned about the quality of the story. The leaks really did hurt the game, or at least on the short-term.

The visuals look amazing but it hasn't got me back onside yet, even without the leaks I wasn't overly keen on it appearing to be a revenge story and this trailer kind of just doubled down on that

So you say as you post a comment? I get that it can be draining to have comment sections full of people who disagree with you (I should know, I have been in a few), not to mention plenty of people who are they purely for the sake of fanning the flames, but if we can't discuss anything how are we supposed to see eye-to-eye with anyone? Being exposed to someone else's opinion might not necessarily change your own, but it does help give a new perspective.

Alright, I get it. They don’t want spoilers on an official video. I’m all for expressing disappointment and a lack of hope here, but it doesn’t matter if the game isn’t gonna turn well, don’t spoil people who do not ask for the spoilers. It’s fine to dislike it, but that’s no excuse not to be respectful of others.

Who would have thought that the most anticipated game of all time (or one of them) 6 months ago would be mishandled so badly that this is where we are. I have a funny feeling it still sells like gangbusters though...but damn....if the backlash is bad enough to make it flop that is saying something.

How can anyone critique a game by going off leaks without playing it for yourself then making up your own mind ?

hey genius, most people won't know about there being leaks in the first place. Who should expect to have to stay away from comments on a video a month and a half away from release?

I've had it spoiled and i've since gone to see the rest myself. My first reaction wasn't good and i didn't like it but the more i've thought about it the more curious i am on how ND tell it in the game where there's way more context behind it, its certainly the story none of us expected for sure and that could either make or break the game. I'm very hyped though and its up there with Cyberpunk for most hyped games this year.

To be honest, it might be as they should. I think it could potentially be "unfair" with the Like/Dislike bar if it gets bombed, same for comments for the actual, official channel of Playstation minimizing spoilers as much as possible. Negativity can be a driving force unfortunately, but having an open mind will be key going forward.

@Octane True, I felt they turned off the like/dislike bar because of potential bombing which can influence a simple minded approach that this game is gonna "suck", but comments for sure they gotta watch out on their official channel to which people are on a mission to give as much bad PR to the game as possible.

@SnowTiesAreCool Not everyone know the game already leaked and spoiled, many will read the comment and get spoiled. Sony is right turning off the comment, they should turn on the like/dislike ratio though.

There wasn't this kind of backlash at the announcement of the game. It came when there was a story leak, which ticked off a part of the fanbase and people who have a beef with the potential political framing of the story. Then there's people like me who just don't like a big company throwing its weight around and shutting down people discussing the backlash.

The trailer looks superb. I read the spoilers to see what the big deal was and my suspicions were confirmed. The Last of Us II has the potential to surpass the first one and to be absolutely groundbreaking.

Seriously can't wait.

I'm surprised so many people think 75k different people disliked the video. It takes about 30 seconds to write a dislike bot for YouTube and with a VPN changing your IP you can easily avoid getting IP locked. You could easily do 1k dislikes in an hour and all it takes is one guy with too much time on his hands.

That's clearly what has happened here, the dislikes were spiking so unnaturally.

@Arnna I enjoy the journey more than anything so I don't mind spoilers especially in video games. It's how you get there, not what happens, for me.

@Octane you cannot silence people's freedom of speech. This way was cheap and has tarnished the companies reputation as falsely copyright striking videos that have not violated such rules affects people's livelihood. These people affected in this manner are right for fighting this. In addition to this the manner in which they struck the videos using a 3rd party company to do this shields them from the legal consequences connected to doing this. The optics are not in their favor. People are allowed to have opinions last time I checked. You as an individual can choose whether you want to listen to them or not. Nobody has the right to tell you you can only have an opinion if it is positive as this isn't fair or just to freedom of speech. I do not agree with whoever the people are who leaked the spoilers however Naughty Dog and Sony could have handled this situation so much better than they actually did.

The disabling comments made total sense because a lot of people will be spoiling there i mean just look at the trailer video in ign or gamespot for example, duh. Second poor youtubers who are getting copyright strike for talking about spoilers which some are true and some are false on a game which hasn't released yet, i'm sure they are angry for not being able for expressing their opinions and not for the all the money they get on said videos wink wink

@swagbag713 I think it has been building for a few years now, it isn’t this sudden thing. The spoilers were just the trigger.

For me, I would say uncharted 3 is the last great game naughty dog made, last of us was good and uncharted 4 was a let down for me. I think it’s clear that ND have their own agenda and now they are trying to shove down players throats, some of the developers have been have even gone as far telling fans on Twitter to F off if they don’t agree with the content in their game.

I know some of the spoilers but I didn’t see any videos or screenshots, I won’t buy the game but not because of the spoilers. I remember a few years ago at E3 the first thing they decide to show is a cutscene or Ellie kissing another girl, biggest show of the year, a game everyone has been anticipating for years and the first thing they wanna do is remind us that Ellie is gay. Then the whole thing about Joel no longer being the player character, these things took me off the game.

I won’t be buying this game and I’m hoping if they ever do another Uncharted they bring Amy back and Neil takes a backseat. The gameplay of last of us does look fun but the story clearly isn’t for me.

Ellie has always been gay but that was never the focus of the plot of the game.

It was the father-daughter relationship of Joel and Ellie and how Joel over the course of the game grew to become more fond of her to the point of...... well you know if you played the 1st game.

If the most interesting thing about a character is their sexual orientation, you have failed as a writer. Based on the leaks, there was an agenda that does not fit with the story.

Gameplay and Graphics wise the game looks amazing. But if the leaks are true, we are in for massive disappointment plot wise.

Typically obscene as the fandom reactions are (regardless of what's there in the leaks), it's a bit embarrassing that companies of Sony's caliber even fuss this much over social media reactions, be it proverbially ODE and fanship-smeared comments or the concept that even social media frequenters themselves have long dubbed "fake internet points". I understand it may be stressful to look at from the team's perspective, but it's one of the last (if any) things that matter in the end. Even though this fact doesn't excuse such behaviour's existence either. Dogs bark, the caravan moves on.

I don't get my opinions on YouTube but I think YouTube is where these hate campaigns gather steam. I think Sony called it right.

I mean if your product is really good, then surely no amount of dissent or backlash would detract from that. It was looking like I was giving this a miss based on the leaks and this conduct does nothing to change my mind

@WiserPaladin Plenty of good products do badly after backlash (even without it), just like they do extremely well when they become hits. The average person, no matter how much he/she wants to deny it, is greatly influenced by the opinion of others.

I'm sure people who specialize ιn PR would have the necessary data to show that, just like when someone from Ubisoft said that demos decrease sales and everyone was up in arms.

I don't think there is a ''right'' way in dealing with leaks.

The Last Of Us and Left Behind already had a very politicised world. Right from the start it describes government reactions to the outbreak and the formation of a sort of rebel group (fireflies). After the opening scene we see soldiers shooting uninfected children trying to escape. After that you live in a highly policed quarantine state where you work as a smuggler illegally handling weapons and contraband whilst dealing with criminals, rebels and outsiders alike. There’s also the more subtle political detail like when Ellie talks about growing up in a military boarding school. The setting of the game is basically a variety of socio-political responses to a deadly virus and the world that emerged afterwards.

Then the trailer for the upcoming sequel shows one of the main characters, already established as gay, having a simple human moment (love, intimacy) and suddenly it’s “extreme politics” and “forcing an agenda”. Most forms of fictional media that portray people that have recently come of age include some sort of romance/sexual experience as it is considered a significant part of growing up or being human in general. Why should we deny Ellie this just because she’s gay?

I can’t discredit LGBT+ criticisms (Fridging etc) as I am not part of the community, but anyone that is saying this game is too political is just over reacting, homophobic or just ignorant to what actually constitutes ‘politics’.

Disclaimer: I’m not ‘SJW’ I’m just an Englishman who likes to play a variety of games and experience a variety of narratives. Hope all the fellow non-haters have a good time with this game when it comes out!

@verynaughtyboy i skimmed a few of the spoilers and i really liked what I saw, I like that they tell stories instead of giving players choice, and it seems like #2 will continue that idea and i'm very excited to see whats gonna go down. Honestly it seemed kind of in the same vein to what i would have pitched for a sequel storyline

Naughty Dog deserves a better release than this. I think the PR on this game has not been great though.
But TLOU is my favorite game ever, I think it's sensational, and I'm confident that the sequel will be a masterpiece as well. I'm all for making divisive decisions and am excited for whatever story Naughty Dog will tell.

Just get rid of it. What purpose does it serve other than dividing people into sides? Would we be any worse off if likes disappeared, would it make a difference?

Plus YouTube comments, which are usually cesspools for people to hate and argue. There's no intelligent discourse, no debating, it's pure herd mentality. People are all patting each other on the back for hating a game that isn't even out yet, and they push each other on. If you disagree with them you're laughed and sworn out.

No, I think removing the whole thing would be a lot better. Get rid of it all until we grow up, intellectually and just as a society.

@Netret0120 This is exactly my feeling, people love the last of us because it’s a story about survival and that father daughter relationship. Then they bring out the dlc to show Ellie is gay and now apparently thats what the series is all about.

I might get the game in the future when it goes down just for the gameplay but from what I have seen the story isn’t for me, I think ND really need to relax on the agendas. Telling fans to F off because they don’t agree with some content in your game is extremely unprofessional.

While it's not the direction I expected the game to take - or even the one I would have wanted - I'm all for games tackling more challenging narratives and "forcing" us to make unpleasant decisions. It's what many of the greatest works of art do, and if ND can pull it off then they deserve major kudos.

Did not look at the spoilers but for those who did, if possible, I'd like to know one thing. Does it seem to show a drastic change to the gameplay presented in the trailers so far?? That is my #1 concern

@Chaotic_Goat there isn't a change in the core gameplay exactly. It's mostly story and character related stuff. It bleeds into the gameplay, but only in the way that you playing as sarah or ellie did in the first game. The basic stuff is still the same

@Octane yes I agree. Apologize and warn people that if they decide to partake in the leaks that they will not be experiencing the game the proper way and will see and hear details out of context. They can keep the excitement going and brush off the fact that this happened with positive press and outreach. This is the only way to handle a situation like this. Abusing a copyright system to silence people's freedom of speech is illegal and immoral. People were affected that didn't show one frame of footage or pictures from the leaks. Do you agree with them being affected for merely commenting on the situation? If you do I recommend you read the 1st amendment of the U.S. constitution and the copyright laws regarding fair use and then ponder the facts of this situation again. If this is not of interest to you and you agree that they did the right thing then I will respectfully agree to disagree. I never want my freedom of speech compromised or especially taken away. In my opinion this was a bad take for Naughty Dog no matter how you slice the pie.

But man am I curious of what in the leaks is making many people lose their mind. I may not be able to avoid them until launch. Waiting for a game shouldn’t be this stressful. Thanks again

People are just hypocritical impatient *****, Naughty Dog has the right to fully pull their game and cancel it or even postpone it years to remake it but yet we’re still out here dropping leaks when we know it’ll just hurt us in the end.
