Ghost of Tsushima PS4 PlayStation 4

One of the areas focused upon during the recent Ghost of Tsushima State of Play was combat. Sucker Punch Productions showed off two very different styles of fighting. Firstly, we saw Jin in full samurai garb marching into the Mongol camp and facing them head on. Then, we approached the same scene with Jin acting as the Ghost, sneaking in the shadows and striking fear into the enemy. The way it was presented made it look as though you could choose to fight in one style or the other, but the truth is more flexible.

Speaking to IGN, art and creative director Jason Connell says the player can fight however they like whenever they like, despite what may happen in the story. "There's definitely important story moments that are more reflective of this change [from samurai to Ghost] than others," Connell says. "But the reality is that even as you have gotten to some story moments, you can still play the game as this Samurai, you may just be more potent or more powerful. We don't make you choose between [samurai and Ghost]."

It sounds like you'll be able to deck Jin out with armour and equipment that more suits one style of fighting over the other, but that you'll be able to access all of his skills no matter what. "When he's a Ghost, he can turn around and play as a samurai because he's always a samurai," Connell continues, noting that even during the State of Play presentation, a prompt appears to initiate a standoff during the Ghost demonstration. "On the stealth [State of Play segment], if you wanted to jump off the roof and start fighting like a samurai, you could totally do that. We don't spec you out and suddenly you can't play as a samurai."

So, if you were worried you'd be locked into fighting as just a samurai or just a ninja, fear not. As you progress, you'll make Jin more powerful and more adaptable with new skills and tools, but you won't have to choose one style over the other. Variety is the spice of life, they say.
