PlayStation is doing right by its employees in both Europe and North America as the coronavirus continues to affect workforces around the world. According to a memo obtained by Waypoint senior reporter Patrick Klepek, the Japanese giant is insisting all staff work from home through 30th April. It’ll also be providing full pay, “regardless of ability to perform remote work due to job function or responsibilities”.
In order to accommodate its employees, it’s issuing a one-time stipend of $1,000 to staff so that they can purchase any equipment they may need. This could include anything from video capture cards to image editing software licenses, we assume. According to Klepek, the package applies to all Worldwide Studios workers, as well. External contractors, meanwhile, will continue to at least receive full-pay during these difficult times.
The manufacturer admitted this week that it’s “carefully monitoring the risk of delays in production schedules for game software titles at both its first-party studios and partner studios”. The release schedule remains relatively unchanged at the time of typing, but we suspect it’s only a matter of time before titles begin to move around. Of course, the safety of its staff is the most important thing, and it sounds like Sony is doing right by its teams.

@NomNom The company I work for is 100% virtual (meaning we don't have any offices) so I predominantly work from home and I work just as hard as I did compared to when I worked in an office. In fact, a lot of people end up working too hard when they make the shift to working at home as the lines between work and life start to blur.
Anyway, good on Sony for taking care of their people.

@hi_drnick I have that problem for my job currently as everyone where I live work from home. However, I was kinda relating it back to the article with naughty dog over working their staff.
@potter32 This is what I don’t like about buying PCs. I accept that it is possible to spend $10,000 on the PC. However a $1000 PC will run all the software needed. You get into diminishing returns at the high end to the point at which if you’re spending more than slightly above £2000 you won’t see a significant difference in most applications.
Even with peripheries no one needs to spend $5000 on a PC. What people want is another matter but you won’t pass it off as a business expense. I reckon some people are going to go significantly over budget though.

I just got laid off from work, so a little jealous.
Like many others in the UK, I started working from home last Tuesday. It is tough adjusting having no human company when you are working. But at least I have a job, and one that will keep paying me through all of this.
