Release Date: 8th Aug 2017 (USA) / 8th Aug 2017 (UK/EU)

Mental health issues are no longer the taboo they once were, but they’re still largely misunderstood. In the harrowing Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, developer Ninja Theory uses a combination of gameplay mechanics and incredible performance capture to convey the struggles of its protagonist. It’s one of the most affecting narratives that you’ll find on the PS4, and it sticks with you long after the credits roll.

9. Journey

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment / Developer: thatgamecompany
Release Date: 21st Jul 2015 (USA) / 21st Jul 2015 (UK/EU)

Journey doesn't need words -- written or spoken -- to tell its story, and that's why it's such a remarkable game. You're free to interpret the meaning behind thatgamecompany's near-perfect outing, but that doesn't stop it from being a powerfully emotive experience. A must-play if you're looking for a completely different style of storytelling on PS4.

Release Date: 6th Feb 2018 (USA) / 6th Feb 2018 (UK/EU)

Shadow of the Colossus is easily one of PlayStation's best. The sombre adventure sees Wander felling huge beasts in exchange for the life of a mysterious woman. The eerie quiet of the open world, the overbearing sense of unease, the incredible tussles with giant monsters, the beautiful music -- it's an extraordinary game, and its story, like all Fumito Ueda's works, is likely to leave you an emotional wreck.

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment / Developer: Naughty Dog
Release Date: 10th May 2016 (USA) / 10th May 2016 (UK/EU)

We can't talk about single player games on PS4 without mentioning Uncharted, and Drake's last adventure is also his best. Having built up multiple beloved characters throughout the series, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End plays with them all, introduces new faces, and delivers a highly entertaining narrative in typical Naughty Dog style. It's a real class act from top to bottom, with excellent acting, animation, and vastly improved gunplay. If you're after a single player blockbuster that doesn't take dozens of hours to beat, this is the whole package.

Publisher: SEGA / Developer: Yakuza Studio
Release Date: 17th Apr 2018 (USA) / 17th Apr 2018 (UK/EU)

Yakuza 6 has one of the best stories in the entire series -- and that's saying a heck of a lot. Although the game focuses solely on recurring protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, Push Square's biggest man crush solidifies himself as one of the greatest characters in modern gaming with an unbelievable performance in what's supposed to be his final outing. The emotion, the drama, the mind-blowing twists -- it's all here and it's absolutely gripping stuff from start to finish.
