What are the best online multiplayer games on PS4? Online multiplayer is a relatively modern feature of video games, but it's just part of the furniture these days. While not every game comes packaged with online modes, many of them do, and some revolve around it entirely. It's safe to say there are lots of great online games on PS4, so we need your help to find the best ones.

Whether you prefer to play competitively or cooperatively, online games offer a convenient and easy way of playing with others. The range of online experiences is huge, though shooters tend to be the most popular. The likes of Fortnite and Call of Duty, for example, are among the biggest games in the world, but they're far from the only options.

Sports games are also massive online, with the likes of FIFA 23 and NBA 2K23 doing big numbers. Similarly, racing and fighting games have engaged online communities; Gran Turismo 7 and Street Fighter 6, for example, have great online modes to enjoy.

More family-friendly experiences are available as well. Overcooked: All You Can Eat, Fall Guys, Crash Team Rumble, and so many others cater to younger players.

There's a vast number of online multiplayer games on PS4, so we need your help whittling them down. As with all our lists, this page is fuelled entirely by the Push Square community. Your user ratings are what informs the list and the order of the games shown, moving and changing as the ratings do. You can cast your ratings on any game's page by clicking the star and choosing a score between 1 and 10. Alternatively, use the below search box to find games and leave ratings that way:

Note: A game will need at least 50 ratings before it appears on this page. If there's a game you think is missing from this page, it might just need a few more ratings to make an appearance.

So, let's get into the best online multiplayer games on PS4, as voted by you lot.

30. Minecraft (PS4)

Arguably one of the most culturally significant releases of modern times, Minecraft is up there with Super Mario and Space Invaders in terms of its impact on the industry. It also happens to be an absolutely superb game that’s ever-expanding thanks to Mojang’s live service model, which sees new content packs and gameplay mechanics added relatively regularly. With the boundless creative energy of LEGO and a genuinely engaging survival core, this is a title that can be almost whatever you want it to be, which helps underline its overall longevity.

29. Mortal Kombat 11 (PS4)

Mortal Kombat 11’s spectacular presentation and crunching combat make it a headline entry in the long-running franchise. With an absolute mountain of single player content to get through, as well as an active competitive scene, this is one of the best fighters you can find on PS4.

28. Mortal Kombat X (PS4)

Mortal Kombat X has become something of a fan favourite over the years — a typically gory and charmingly daft entry in the long-running series. On a mechanical level, X gets a lot right — it's like a melding of older Mortal Kombat titles, spruced up for modern times. Whatever your skill level happens to be, it's great bloody fun, capped off by a comprehensive character roster and loads of engaging game modes.

27. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (PS4)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare brings back one of the most influential shooters ever in this robust remake. It looks fantastic, plays just as well as you'd expect, and features all the multiplayer goodness you could want. The campaign is the star of the show, though, building on what came before to make it even more cinematic and engaging. One of the better entries in the franchise in recent memory.

26. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (PS4)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered brings one of the best and most influential first-person shooters to PS4. Though it shows its age somewhat these days, the game's single-player campaign is still fantastic, with some particularly breathtaking moments still holding up very well. The multiplayer is preserved here, too, and is arguably the best part. Again, it's been bettered in the years since, but there's no denying just how much the online functionality of this title changed the landscape. It's still a lot of fun, and there's a certain charm to its simplicity.

25. Overwatch (PS4)

Overwatch has been superseded by Overwatch 2 now, but it was one of PS4's tightest and most kinetic first person shooters. Blizzard's team-based multiplayer FPS combined excellent gunplay with top tier character design to deliver an endlessly entertaining experience. Each hero was totally unique, and they all complemented each other with crazy abilities that were easy to learn but hard to master. Pretty much everything great about this game has carried over to its successor, but many will fondly remember the original and how it evolved people's expectations of multiplayer shooters.

24. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled (PS4)

A wonderful recreation of the PS1 original, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is a real blast from the past. Drift boosting through beautifully rebuilt tracks in the generous Adventure mode or taking the racing online is a lot of fun. Much like the PS1 title it's based on, this is an arcade racing game with tight controls, surprising difficulty, and lots to see and do. Despite some areas that could've done with modernising, this is probably just about the best kart racer on PS4.

23. Resogun (PS4)

Housemarque is a studio known for its arcade games, and Resogun remains one of its best. Like a modern day Defender, you're tasked with blasting away screens full of baddies while rescuing the last of humanity. It's a gorgeous shoot-'em-up with responsive gameplay, endless replayability, and supremely satisfying visuals. If you like a good old fashioned score-chaser, get Resogun played.

22. WipEout Omega Collection (PS4)

The granddaddy of anti-gravity racing makes a triumphant return to PlayStation with a gorgeous remaster that brings together content from WipEout HD, Fury, and 2048. The fast and fluid racer plays beautifully, looks gorgeous, and runs like a shiny, metal dream. The recently added VR support is incredibly well implemented too, making this an even better package for PSVR owners. While we’d have preferred an all new entry in the franchise, this serves as a great reminder of why WipEout is so beloved by fans.

21. Rise of the Tomb Raider (PS4)

Rise of the Tomb Raider takes Crystal Dynamics’ reboot and greatly raises the stakes, with more equipment and combat options than in the previous instalment. While structurally it’s largely familiar, and there are some serious question marks over the voice acting and script, the game offers a real rollercoaster of set-piece moments, taking heroine Lara Croft across the globe as she continues to evolve into the wise-cracking heroine we all know and love.
