Update: GDC 2020 has now been officially cancelled following multiple companies and developers cancelling their plans to attend because of the coronavirus. GDC states that it will attempt to put a show together in the summer instead.
Update: The plug may very well be pulled on GDC 2020 this year, as more companies have withdrawn from the industry event citing concerns over their employees' safety. Activision, Epic, and Blizzard are just a few of the names who've joined Sony, Facebook, Kojima Productions, and Microsoft by withdrawing from the show. At this point, there's a strong possibility that the organisers may have to cancel the show.
Original Story: Kojima Productions, the studio behind Death Stranding, has confirmed that it'll miss out on GDC 2020. The developer, headed by Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima, says: "[we have] made the difficult decision to cancel our participation at the 2020 Game Developers Conference due to increasing concerns related to coronavirus".
Obviously Kojima Productions isn't the first company to cancel its plans for GDC 2020. Just last week, both PlayStation and Facebook announced that they wouldn't be attending due to coronavirus concerns. At the time of writing, GDC itself is still set to go ahead, opening on the 16th March and ending on the 20th March.

This virus is much more than some overhyped story from the media. People near affected areas need to take precautions or else many more will be at risk. Video game announcements are not as important as well, staying alive.
Instead of cancelling, Kojima should wrap himself in a body bag and entrust his safe delivery to a competent Porter.

GDC will be cancelled soon i would expect, as will many other games shows and conventions in the coming weeks. People's health is more important.
Honestly, anyone wanting to announce anything including Sony should just do some live streams / a state of play right now

Just cancel it - we can pick it up next year. People just need to stay in their home base for now.
gdc is nothing. i am more concerned that japan will end up cancelling the 2020 summer olympics. that would be a huge loss

This is a pretty unprecedented move by corporations across the globe and industry spectrum. This is a nasty virus. Wash your hands, boys and girls.
I suppose its all an excuse because those companies actually had nothing to show either right internet commentators 🙄 or are people actually prepared to acknowledge the threat now

the summer, no chance, coronavirus hasn't even begun it's ascent to peak outbreak numbers yet, it be around for another 3 months at least
